We bought a 981 Porsche Cayman for $15,000. What’s the catch? Its six-speed transmission has only four working gears. The dealer quoted to replace the transmission for $15,000 as it’s not a serviceable part. Can we fix it for less? Let’s find out.

I have mixed feelings. While it's great that you got $10-15K off for a simple fix, the original owner shouldn't have let the dealer make that decision for them, a real right to repair issue here. Just a simple fluid change would have let you know if you had exploded a gear, or what you found - a bent / missing shift fork. A trip to an independent shop would be my next step. Driving it a 4K RPM across the country - without checking or changing the fluid first?? Something I might have done 20 years ago with a car worth 1/10th the price... but... The transmission is built by Getrag for Porsche, so it might not be a complete mystery. There may be rebuild manuals and parts from them. Again, access to these manuals and parts is a right to repair issue. You got a great car at a great price, but you exposed the weakness of crappy dealer support and lack of repair information to owners from the manufacturer.

This is just how dealers work. They are part swappers. I had a BMW convertible where I had the transmission serviced by AAMCO and the front had a brace attached to the subframe with rivet nuts and some of the rivet nuts busted when the brace was removed. I brought it to the dealer, told them what to do (put new rivet nuts in the holes) and they told me it needed a whole new front subframe. So, this ended with me on my back in my garage under the car replacing the rivet nuts with a makeshift tool and reattaching the brace. Worked fine!

Whhuuuuut, no post fix drive video?!?!? Nice fix...is the seller furious? Would a local Porsche specialist been likely to diagnose and fix the same way? I've heard that many even basic jobs on the Cayman/Boxters are labor intensive hence why it's probably still ultimately cheaper to get a new BRZ vs a used Cayman in terms of similar track-day performance?

We’re headed to the track for the next video! Watching a stock car drive down the highway at 70mph isn’t exactly exciting, but we can confirm the car drives perfectly now. We haven’t talked to the seller, but believe he was aware of our dowel theory before the purchase. The seller said he asked a few independent shops for quotes, and was told the transmission would need to be replaced.

@@Grassrootsmotorsports Awesome, looking forward to the next video. I've always loved the way Cayman's look and how they reportedly drive (I've never had the honor of driving one myself). I'm disappointed to hear that even the local shops wanted to replace the transmission instead of digging a little deeper for this shockingly simple and affordable solution.

We bought the car with a little more than 65,000 miles, and its just over 70,000 now.

Pretty normal, dealerships arent transmission shops.

That’s why you don’t take an out of warranty car to the dealer for service

Any idea why that pin came out in the first place? If other people recommended looking at it, it sounds like it’s a fairly common issue.
@Grassrootsmotorsports
@Grassrootsmotorsports 3 месяца назад
We suspect it was slightly undersized from the factory, and/or it just worked its way loose. Porsche's retaining mechanism seems to be just peening the edges of the brass shift fork a little bit.
@emotionz3
@emotionz3 3 месяца назад
I’d lean toward the previous owner relaxing their palm/arm weight on the shifter while cruising in 6th gear, causing vibration/wear on the fork. Very common issue with manual transmissions. I’ve seen metal shift forks wear through in Mazda’s, always 5th or 6th gear.
@aMaff

I'm legitimately angry. A $15,000 transmission that when a $10 pin falls out because of German Engineering, is just...trash? And there's zero documentation on it. The enshittification continues :(
@emotionz3
@emotionz3 3 месяца назад
It isn’t German engineering that failed, shift forks fail because oriole rest their palm on the shifter while driving. This failure often occurs with the overdrive/cruising gears.

While you had it apart, did you do anything with the IMS bearing?
@apolloandratti7922
@apolloandratti7922 3 месяца назад
NO IMS Bearing on the 981 Cayman/Boxsters (including the 987.2). 981 is one of the most reliable Porsches built if well maintained.
