I love how quickly the prices of m.2’s are falling. You can now get a 2TB that’s much cheaper and faster than even the 1TB series x expansion card. Microsoft really dropped the ball on proprietary storage

I got a 1TB $63 Crucial M.2 NVME for the PS5 that is PS5 compatible right out of the box. 5560MB/s was nice to see showing up on the PS5, so it meets / exceeds the minimum recommended spec. The $63 drive even came with a heatsink pre-applied to it. You can get one for $53 without a heatsink on it, but I opted to just go for the all-in-one solution that had everything ready to go. Could have saved like $2 going with an aftermarket one, but was glad to pay a bit more and just pop it in and go.

@shyamal903
@shyamal903 Год назад
@@BlazeAlien The Xbox Series X is only marginally more powerful than the PS5, and has a slower SSD (so is less powerful in certain aspects). It has a controller, that while having better battery life, has only two new features over the Xbox One controller, USB-C and a share button. It barely has any exclusive games available right now, plus any exclusives that it will ever get can just be played on a PC, on launch day, without the need for an Xbox at all. I know PlayStation games are coming to PC as well, but that happens a few years after it comes to PlayStation consoles. Also, expanding the internal storage might be easier on Xbox, but is far more expensive. So please, when you try to start a platform war, please understand that there are some things that Xbox does better and some things that PlayStation does better. Saying "PS5 is just worse in every way" is factually wrong, as I have just proven.

pro-tip from a long time pc builder: take the sticker off your nvme drive so your chips are actually being cooled by your heatsink. There will be some cooling either way but youre insulating the chips from cooling by leaving the sticker on. some companies have their sticker made out of a heat conductive material but a lot, especially smaller no name companies, its just a regular ol sticker. nvme drives can get very hot and there is never an "overkill" when youre protecting your hardware from throttling or especially protecting it from death. consoles dont have the same tools us pc users have and you cant actively monitor your hardware temps and stop what youre doing if theres a problem and the temps spike to dangerous levels. so especially on console you might as well give your hardware the best chance it has at a long fast life. I always peel the stickers off the PCB and stick it to the plastic in the ssd box incase i ever need to reinstall it on the drive (i never have but im always paranoid about throwing things away)

Good thing for people to know before doing this: the screws for the m2 are usually stripped. So use electrical tape. You need to make a little buffer out of electrical tape to keep a gap between the m2 and the console, then tape it in place so it doesnt move around disconnect.

PS5 games are way bigger than last gen titles to on average so expect your gonna need more storage if you have a large library of games like i do, and i play almost exclusively physical copies of the game. The heatsink is a bit of an interesting thing. Having the heat pipe just cover the length of the drive doesn't make a ton of sense to me. Then it's just evenly spreading that heat over the drive, but the pipe doesn't reach up to the fin stack to dissipate that heat. I don't think it's going to be anywhere near as effective as, say a CPU cooler; but then again, SSD's don't need a massive amount of cooling to begin with.

Looks like a nice heat sink, but I believe the air goes under the cover for the expandable storage area. That’s why there’s a spacer under the memory card that just looks like a little Bebe. And you just completely block the airflow. There’s very little airflow directly under the plastic cover, and it is not guided.
@ianb.1603
@ianb.1603 8 месяцев назад
There is almost no airflow that goes under the ssd, the hot components are on the top side, and heatsinks are designed to pull the heat away from the ssd and expel it, not push the cold air into the ssd to cool it. Any of these types of heatsinks are far superior then a built in heatsink with cover.

Just a note, nand flash works best when it's not being cooled, it's the controller that needs the cooling. What I've done with my NVMe drives is cut the thermal pad to ensure it only contacts the controller and removed the rest
@backupplan6058
@backupplan6058 Год назад
You are right but done the wrong thing, that flash was being heated by the controller through the thermal paste, also as it moves through the different flash chips they haven’t received any preheat from the controller and the other flash chips. Manufacturers don’t put in millions into R&D to then put thermal pads where not needed when the could save a buck.

@Robinthefox88
@Robinthefox88 Год назад
@@backupplan6058 you're right, the controller passively heats the nand, I won't dispute that, but the heat going from the controller through the pcb is a tiny fraction of the total waste heat being generated by the controller, and wouldn't by itself be enough to bring the nand to it's optimal operating temp. The nand will heat itself due to being worked, which will have a far greater effect than the controller leeching heat into the nand through the PCB. And if you were correct, why would you bother putting a heatsink on an NVMe drive to begin with? Surely running passively or a heatspreader would be the best option. If you cool just the controller the speed stays higher and the nand works more reliably than if you cool both.

@backupplan6058 Год назад
@@Robinthefox88 simple, the controller produces far more heat than the flash, significantly more and far faster. There is also one controller to several flash chips, saying it will heat itself, yea eventually but not from cold. Small reads throughout gameplay across those chips isn’t going to heat them at all but if it’s getting that heat from a constantly working controller then is not running cold.

Xbox Fan here, and I LOVE how Sony did this.....for $400 on X/S you only get 2TB, for $250 you can get 4TB on PS5....double the storage for almost half the price. MS has to get a handle on their expansion card for the X/S, they have to cut the prices in by at least 30% to make sense at all. I spent $200 on a 1TB for my Series S, while only spending $130 for a 2TB drive from my PS5....yeah, it was easier to upgrade the Series S, but NOT DOUBLE the price easier...Storage is really the only place Sony has over the XBOX Series systems.....everything else is kind of a wash, or the XBOX is better....like I got my Series S for $200, and getting a 1TB drive for it cost me as much as buying the system.
