I do not miss my GPD Win 4 6800u. The device doesn't get hot but it gets uncomfortably warm and it's the loudest device. While I absolutely appreciated a physical keyboard and mouse, there was virtually no software to improve the experience or adjust the device. The calibration software was in Chinese and not clear. It makes me appreciate how much work and nuance is in the Armory crate. The ability to adjust TDP, updates to firmware, updates to bios, set macros. Also, the ability to quickly adjust settings Like CPU boost, controls, resolution, FSR etc. In addition each game can have specific adjustments including CPU boost, TDP, Gyro. Lastly you can calibrate all the sensors and controls. Sure you can use third part apps but nothing comes close to having it all in one spot and per game profiles. The only thing I do miss is the design and the mouse nub.
I moved from the Win 4 to the Win Mini, and I absolutely loved for the form factor over the Win 4. That said, there's something about the girth (pause) that made the Win 4 feel premium to other devices in the same range.
As someone who has been using the 8840u version, I could not be happier with how I've been using the device. It unfortunate you tried dealing with the stock software to handle all of those settings, because the correct answer would be to use Handheld Companion instead and have 0 issues. I never felt the need to calibrate anything on the device in my time using it, and as for all of those updates, Windows handled almost everything except graphics and CPU drivers. Everything else was set. But the elephant in the room is absolutely the heat that's created from this device. Specifically the right hand side, I can only play about 35 minutes of Wukong or any other high-intensity AAA title before it gets UNCOMFORTABLY hot to hold. An easy fix for that is buying or printing a grip for the thing, but that kind of defeats the slim form factor.
Have to agree. I owned the GPD Win 4 8840U and surprisingly running Black Myth Wukong is a breeze and I am running between 15-18w and getting above 50-60fps easily on low settings.
@@Kaiqi107 I’m not saying using it is wrong. But measuring fps with it turned on doesn’t make sense. Here your 50-60fps is generated by algorithm and that doesn’t count for the device’s rendering capability.
@@neotokyovidhe is not the only one including frame gen in handheld reviews. To me it’s totally fine to include fps with frame gen on in review. Maybe he could improve by adding with/ without frame gen on differences.
“Size does not matter” Camera pans down. Anyway that keyboard doesn’t really seem usable to me, maybe it’s great in certain circumstances . I do love its portability along with the onexfly.
Without having it on hand, it’s hard to tell if it’s like a “thumb keyboard” or if you can actually use the home row typing method with all of your fingers
@@zerovolts19Yep basically, it doesn’t seem that much better than the on screen on, however I do agree that its amazing for quick access to hotkeys and stuff
That was my thought upon first buying this thing, but I quickly learned how incredibly clutch it is to slightly slide the screen up enough to access the Windows key + entering passwords and things like that. Is it practical? Nah, but is it cool? Yah
I own one and I can tell you that the only time I would ever want to type on the thing is if my kids are using my phone. This means I have another device to use but otherwise I would never want to. However the one thing that the keyboard is extremely helpful for is hotkeys. Sure something like the steam deck can have four different hot keys mapped to the back but being limited to four is a problem. I can access all of them with this and I honestly can't imagine using a handheld that can't do that.
BIG TIP for anyone using this device or anything else from GPD; DO NOT use the stock software for adjusting TDP, use the paid version of Handheld Companion to enable Auto TDP and get a bunch more controller settings in addition to some other things as well. It is 1000x more intuitive to use and is not in Chinese either. Using this has it so I can switch from Wukong to playing my Switch games without making any adjustments in the settings and still not using any excess power
Fan noise and Battery life seem to be the biggest issues with these things. I heard from other reviewers that steam OS is just so much better with the UI too. I really hope these handheld manufacturers either start putting in steam OS or Microsoft does some heavy software engineering and has like an "xbox" mode where it just turns windows 11 into and xbox.
What most people don’t know about GPD is that they have a GPD OS available for download on their website for all of their devices, and it’s Steam OS running on Manjaro. I dual boot it on my GPD and it functions exactly the same as a Steam Deck with the exact same UI and features, just with a more powerful APU.
@@NutellaCrepe Wow that sounds so awesome. Weird that I never knew this, but I guess a lot of the spotlight has been taken away from GDP. I kinda just wish it was smaller and cheaper now.
I like my gpd win 4, it's my device I take with me on the go instead of my Legion go or rog ally. Simple fact is that it is much smaller than all the other handhelds, it's easier to pack and you can fit it in your sweater pocket. Having a device with a lanyard that goes around your wrist really takes away the worry that you might drop your device on the hard floor or pavement while walking around. Plus the battery life isn't that bad tbh, it's a 45.62Wh battery which is bigger than the original rog ally, but smaller than the Legion go. The SSD is also a 2280, I have the 4tb 64gb ram 7840u and it's just loaded with games lol
A perfect device with AR glasses like Xreal or Legion glasses. All that holds it back is cooling & fan noise. I'm sure this will improve with more efficient chips & TDP in the future. Exciting times!
PRO TIP** The motion assistant program works on the legion go and it is Miles better than any other alternative like the native gyro in Legion space or handheld companion
Honestly, the steam deck and Legion go are the best options right now for PC handhelds, price and performance and screen, they both have different features too, for rog ally x the price is ridiculous. Anyway i love your channel man, please keep uploading more, much love.
@akaqe4573 The rog Ally x isn't ridiculous it has the most storage battery life and ram in its price range. This youtuber deleted my comment and the other guys comment for pointing that out.
Excellent video with a true user experience from MONTHS!! Not from some days or weeks. It's a fun lilly Windows gaming device!! Will I purchase it to seriously play on it?? I don't know. The screen is very small for my tired eyes (that's why I have a Legion Go), and the keyboard which is good to have for non gamepad games is also small, but I think that I may use it. So, yup, it's a fun "gadget" to play on, but an expensive gadget!!
I love my Win4 7840u 32gb 4TB. I love it just because it is what it is but I don’t like using it. It is not ergonomic at all but it’s highly functional and is very cool. I love holding it but using it doesn’t do it for me. The Controls although is serviceable doesn’t feel as good to use as the Ally x or OG ally. But I do love the Dpad
I have the GPD Win 4 and Mini, and I picked up a second hand Lenovo Legion Go on a whim, and let me tell you - size most definitely matters. I am squinting to play almost anything on the Wins. It runs fine, the ergonomics are fine, and I can even get used to the heat, but it's not...enjoyable. It's serviceable, at best. Not recommended, unless you have a very good eyesight.
are you using meta sunglasses? and can you do a similar day out video with switch lite? I got a modded one but I rarely take it out so wanted to know how people use it!
I love my win 4 2024. Cooling is great and battery has been great (I am getting 3 hours on 8watts and I don't usually use it above 15 watts and that gives 1.5-2 hours) only problem I have are the buttons are clicky and I just feel like I will wear them down if I press them too many times. But that just might be paranoia cuz I have never used clicky buttons
Very nice review as always. You're nailing it. This device though, not for me. I am getting a legion GO. I want in-house portability and immersive screen
It's a very good device, I just don't like the price. I feel like the mainstream market has already influenced people away from these Chinese developed handhelds, offering more features at lower prices. I don't think GPD can do a heck of a lot about that, but it doesn't change anything from a consumer standpoint. It's pretty cool that it's somewhat pocketable though.
Hey bro! I really need an advice from you, what should I get, Steam deck or Rog Ally x ? I have a large library on Epic games and afraid i won't able to play them on a steam deck , but at the same time i am adraid of windows 11. Will windows glitch olin a year on Rog ally ? Do i have i to reinstall windows 11 ally 2 times in a year ?
IDK how your lady sleeps with clickity clackity buttons lol, I have the deck and the legion go and thats what get my gf when she’s trying to sleep. Roomie in college was a big late night Xbox gamer so I don’t blame her if you sleep in silence
You sound so biased in your intro even though you say "no bias". You say third party has better support and prices, but the steam deck is half the price and valve support's system has never failed me.
He said to go third party on those foreign (Indiegogo/Chinese) type devices because of support, he never talked about the steamdeck or the Asus devices. I am 100% on your side when you say Valve never let you down (me either since they replaced my of Steamdeck for free the first time a button broke) but there is no bias in stating that the third party reseller is better at customer support than the company selling the device.
Why the hell did you call it a PSP? It is in no way a Playstation Portable outside of resembling it from a design perspective. What is even more confusing is that you put the actual real name of the device in the title too so this is like clickbait that tells on itself. Wtf?
