When I made these after adding the flour to the butter and water mix I put it into the fridge for an hour that seemed to firm it up so that it could be formed into balls . Maybe that's were the book went wrong or maybe I'm just talking balls 😂
keith i feel your pain, following exact ingredients and ends up in the bin, i was at school in the 70s and 80s but never saw cheese balls thankfully, lumpy mash spam fritters my fav and strawberry/choc/ or banana custard with some sponge cake, having found your channel 3 weeks ago im back watching.

It might be because of the mustard making it too wet. Another thing I've found is with eggs it depends on the size of them if they are big maybe two would have been sufficient. They don't always state things like that in recipe books though. We did the chicken curry yesterday and had to alter that slightly. We had top up the water in it as it would of been way too thick once it had reduced down
I've done the chocolate concrete, the bakewell tart and the chocolate sponge with chocolate sauce and none of them have been winners. I suppose in reality school dinners were basic. I've enjoyed going through the book though.
Keith, there is apparently a shortage of cooking oil due to the Ukraine invasion. Also, corn oil is supposed to have a high smoking point. Whenever I use oil, which is very rare, I use peanut oil. Peanut oil has the highest smoking point and the Chinese use it in their recipes as they’re high temp, quick cook for the most part. On another note, apart from the mash potatoes, which always tasted odd, our school dinners were da bomb! Never had cheese balls though 🤔
Don’t remember them in school in late 1970s lololol god the dinner ladies would have had blue faces with the lad I knock around with they would have been asking for big ball ,,,, red balls ,,,, big cheese ball they where all mad in the 70s but funny 😄
I’m dying laughing at the idea of footballs and who came up with that idea. Valiant effort and I’d like to see that recipe in print to have a look at where it’s wrong and can be fixed. I seem to remember cheese puffs 🤷♀️

I haven't heard of these for school dinners either ofg, looks like 2 eggs would have been enough bit of a disaster this one . I think this would be nicer with cheesy mash rolled into balls and breadcrumbed 🙂

Hi Keith, that was a bloody disaster..I think you need whisk for a start, as when your blending the flour into the margarine and water, it would be better. I think also maybe use proper margarine, not rhe spreadable type, and finally may e let the mixture get stone cold so that it stiffens up a bit to make it easier to form the balls. I think the balls need to be about the size of a large marble, and cook them a bit slower.. I would think at least 3 or 4 minutes cooking to cook thoroughly as theybwere clearly cooked in oil too quickly.. I did laugh when you asked Nat to taste your cheesy balls.. naughty boy lol 😆 Another great video, entertaining, even if the recipe itself was a fail!!

Nah definitely nothing you did, there's no way that recipe would have worked. This is clearly a sign that you should sack the wheel off and just make the curry for your next one 😆
I'm starting to get the feeling that whoever wrote these recipes has an aversion to salt. There's absolutely no way that 'a pinch of salt' is adequate for this recipe'. I've not finished watching the video yet but I'm going to predict that these taste like deep fried glue.
@@faydove I doubt that's down to salt, more likely less sugar and processed food. School dinners were nicely seasoned when I was a kid, I just think this book is trash.
what a damn shame mate - the author and publisher want pulling up for messing people around with a dud recipe - ingredients are costing a fortune these days - just look at how much cheese has gone up in Aldi and they are doing sod all to help poor people on minimum wage and benefits. Were you able to give it to your dog? - I wouldn't blame the dog if it took one sniff and said no chance.
