It has to be something to do with anonymity. At a certain point you have scammed enough people over the internet that it almost feels like a videogame, but with actual cash prizes, which coupled with the danger of doing something super illegal, and the power you have to control and manipulate a person, would be an insane dopamine rush. I think the point at which they start to get savage is when they're Jonesing, when they can almost taste that high and it seems only just out of reach, and they lash out at the person who's denying them their next hit.

I had the same exact thought as he was coming up to that bridge. He could have Dixie in the car screaming. "WATCH OUT FOR THE DEER: Then Edna would scream as the car crashed into the bridge abutment. I'm sure that the scammer would in fact insist that she walk, or have Dixie scratch the cars. Then you could have the sound of police cars coming, and am ambulance, with a different siren, and fire trucks. Have half a dozen sirens.
