two tips from an omnium cargo owner: 1. you want to have old bike tubes as cargo straps. just loop them around and you can easily tighten up any load without fiddeling buckels 2. i dont have the extending front end on my bike, but if you remove it you can pretty much safely position your bike on the front end. try it out, mine fits perfectly in the elevator and is using up no space at all in our flat. greetings from germany :)

Yeah, I wonder whether that ratio is adjustable. Even for a loaded cargo bike the combination of the wide handlebar and the steering reduction ratio looks like a lot to my uneducated eyes. Other than that I like it!

I built up an omnium cargo wifi as a classic partypace 3x thumb shifter with 2.1 gravel tyres last summer. Ive run groceries on it every week since and since we dont have a car its been literally lifechanging. And genuinely the most fun i have had on a bike since i was a kid. Doing groceries! Its great, everyone needs one.
@ehounshell
@ehounshell 6 месяцев назад
Certainly a cargo bike is way more nimble than a normal bike + trailer. But for sporadic errands, maybe that's the way to go? (Obvi I know for you there was another motivation to try out the Omnium and do a review.) Your points at the end made me think of this. I have a Burley Flatbed, which is a pretty good solution for an apartment dweller: it can carry up to 100lbs or so, weighs basically nothing, and when not in use will fit under your bed.

Exactly... I live small and car-free: have done so many shopping/moving/working trips... with my Radical Designs Cyclone IV trailer (even camping & travel). The hitch can by mounted on any of your favourite bikes (with QR or thru-axle). So you can keep the ride quality and characteristics of the bike. No compromise on handling. Wheels come off in seconds for easy storage behind a door, under a bed, in a closet, ...
@billinhouston3291

I worked at a shop that sells Omnium bikes in germany. They're one of my personal favourites among non e bike cargo bikes. Also one thing I would definitely put on the handlebar would be a bell. Just because it's usage is mainly urban. There are really nice and integrated looking ones by knog I believe.
@claudemarie9136

I believe that you *must* have a bell (as well as other specific safety equipments such as reflectors) in Germany. As it happens Germany is a signatory to the 1968 Vienna Convention i.e. Road traffic (became law as in ratified,10 years later 3 August 1978). Surprisingly, if Spain is a contracting member to the Vienna Convention, it never ratified it 🤷‍♀️. I leave it down to you to find out how is defined 🚲 road worthiness in 🇩🇪 Law.

I had a one wheel trailer (BOB) that I used with a recumbent and later a mountain bike. If you could fit it in, it worked very well. Dealing with hills on the recumbent was iffy because the granny wouldn't go low enough, but a little money would have fixed that. I've also used a 2 wheel kid trailer that my nephew has. I think I prefer the trailer solution to a cargo bike, but I'd be willing to try one. Downhills and tailwinds.

I’ve got one of the ti minimaxi’s , I find the bike easier to manhandle up and downstairs etc by shouldering it, bit like cx racers do, you can stand the bike on the front end and it’s very stable (that’s how I store mine) really looking forward to how you get on with it, I love mine, my most ridiculous load has been a 6x6foot fence panel, I wouldn’t recommend 😮

Not sure about the Mini Max, but you can stand the Cargo up on its nose. Maybe that can help with the elevator situation, and hold it by the top tube while it's standing vertically, and push it around on its front wheel.

My top tip, having built a bike to similar geometry is to increase the steering lever ratio so that the amount you need to turn the bars to get a given turn radius is reduced, to make it ride more like a regular bike e.g. for 2x the wheelbase, go to 2x the steering ratio. Not sure how possible this is on the omnium but it's working fine on my omnium-alike.

Cargo bikes. Many e-bike conversions. Get a trailer to go with the Omnium. Currently I am waiting for a a Bike Friday Ever-E-Day frame and a Clockwork fast tire frame with integrated racks. I will put motors on both. Also, for urban cargo use there is no reason not to put a Bafang mid-drive on that Omnium. Thank you again for the content.

This is cool. I spent time in China in the mid 1980s. There were very few cars on the road, no matter the city I went to. Everyone rode bikes and many goods were transported within the city by cargo bike or by creatively loading a regular “Flying Pigeon” ( the standard model many people seemed to have - a very sturdy bike). I was doing my masters in Urban Planning at the time and wondered if China would go the way of the west with respect to cars and urban development. The thing about urban development based on the car is that people do not miss having cars if the infrastructure for a pedestrian and bike focussed city is built properly and not an afterthought. Cars have many benefits but also costs (“negative externalities”) which are not necessarily obvious like the effect of their widespread use on physical fitness and urban heat islands created by so much asphalt. China is now the largest maker and consumer of automobiles in the world and many western cities are examining how to reduce automobile use such as through tax subsidies to people who live near where they work and businesses that provide bike parking as opposed to car parks.
