This Setting is Ruining Your PC - Gsync/Freesync & FPS Caps
Over 90% of you watching right now are almost certainly using settings that either make your display look way worse, massively increase your latency, or both… Let’s talk about it
Now, before we get into this trust me favorite this video right now, because believe me you’re going to want to come back to this one time and time again as this video is my magnum opus of the over a year of latency and motion testing I’ve been doing on dozens of displays using both Nvidia and AMD GPUs with a 1000fps camera, and what I’ve found is going to shock you, as it turns out when set up correctly you can actually have far lower latency and a better image in motion all while using less PC resources.
How, well it all has to do with sending the fastest, most up to date frame your PC can produce without tearing, and unfortunately the default settings for GPUs and games don’t allow this to happen, and most advice on settings people give is also incorrect.
Now this journey all started with me testing various fps caps and Nvidia control panel settings, and what I found was that yes the old adage of Vsync adding tremendous latency in games was true, however at the time I also found that Gsyc+Vsync in the Nvidia control panel +Reflex in game could actually lead to far less input delay on many games and in fact was overall better than using an external cap in the driver or Riva Tuner Statistics Server to set a global limit.
Not only that, but you would also get a tear free experience using these settings and it could actually be even faster than no fps cap as when you are heavily GPU bound this can actually increase latency.
However, viewers then pointed out that external caps can have higher latency than in game caps, so I went to investigate this claim now using an AMD GPU and I found that they were actually correct. In-game caps led to far lower latency than any other method.
However I still hadn’t had a chance to revisit this on Nvidia GPUs to see if this is actually better than Gsync+Vsync+Reflex, so I recently did just that.
Now for these tests I ran 3 different configurations on a 138Hz OLED monitor.
Gsync+Vsync+ULLM
Gsync+Vsync+Reflex
Gsync+Vsync+133fps cap
Gsync+120fps cap as in my testing it turns out that VRR used in Gsync and Freesync monitors actually needs 1ms of time to fully work.
What I mean by this is for you to get 0 perceivable tearing you must add an additional ms of latency to give the display more time to process.
This is done by first getting the latency of your monitor which for me as an example would be to take 1000ms / 138fps to get 7.246ms of total latency.
You then add 1ms to this number which would give us 8.246ms of total latency, and to understand what frame rate that is, we simply take 1000ms again / this new latency which gives us 121.27fps, however I then round down to the nearest even number to give it a little headroom, which means that actually the max framerate we can run on a 138Hz display is 120fps.
Other common refresh rates would look like this
240Hz = 192fps
144Hz = 124fps
120Hz = 106fps
When I was testing AMD GPUs I found that If you don’t do this you will likely see slight tears at the bottom of your screen which can make the display look weird and throw you off when you're playing a competitive game.
However on an Nvidia GPU I found that if you combine Gsync+Vsync you actually only need to add 0.3ms of latency for VRR to work correctly
240Hz = 223fps
144Hz = 138fps
120Hz = 115fps
so in theory unless AMD can also do the same thing, Nvidia may be able to deliver higher untorn framerates, but that’s only if the latency is still good, so let’s find out.

This actually does work. If I follow the traditional way of capping 3 fps under my refresh rate with no vsync, I get tearing at the bottom of my screen. If I follow this calculation and cap lower, the tearing is gone, even with vsync off. Of course, you could just cap a few below with vsync on and not have that issue, but some games don't work properly/stutter with vsync enabled at all (even with fps cap), so this is a good backup option.

The second i enable Gsync + Vsync my mouse and input feels a lot more sluggish. Vsync adds some weird input delay or similar, just moving mouse left and right makes it seems slower and less responsive. How do you explain that ?. AND GUESS what dumb, dumb, Nvidia programed it so if Reflex is enabled then Low Latency Mode to ULTRA is preempted by the Reflex implementation. The latest Nvidia driver JUST made it so Low Latency Mode to ULTRA will now work on DX12 games. If it was a SHIT mode they would not do this. They did this because NOT all DX12 games have implementations of Reflex and LM to ULTRA is considered that implementation within the driver.

i have almost same monitor i think (VG27) and i still use 3070ti with a 13700k. plus i play warzone and i hate input delay! it is perfectly fine to run it 170hz. it is its advertised speed. just like RAM overclocking with XMP. and it is worth it! i do notice faster frames than 144. beware you might be color limited due to display port bandwidth limit. when on 170hz make sure to put in and check regularly if things look weird because windows messes with it on the random.... nvidia control panel>change resolution tab 170Hz color depth - highest(32bit) - 8 bpc Format - RGB - FULL i do not use frame caps or ullm but im always gpu bound... i think as said in video best is default drivers settings (concerning latency) with gsync+vsync+reflex. with the latter very well implemented in COD. but things change a bit if you reach your fps cap and are no longer gpu bound... then if i understand correct you want to cap this 1ms below the vsync limit. which if i understood correctly would be 240hz=192fps, 144=124, 120 = 106 then for ours 170hz it would be cap on 158 fps. best method to cap frames is MSI afterburner+RTSS. or Asus their equivalent software GPU Tweak. i think you can gain more fiddling with windows... Message signal interupt(MSI- not the brand) settings , DPC latency fixes, altho nvidia did a lot recently so idk which are still needed. mouse related windows issues and things like resolution timer (resolution timer has changed in win11, do mind)

Is this 0.3ms below actually necessary? For the longest time people have said that 2-3fps below the refresh rate is what it should be, not more. For me it would be 152fps, instead of 157 on a 160hz panel. Not a noticeable drop (in the few games I play which run that well) so might aswell but hmm

Same setup as you. Ik it’s late but, 1) gsync + vsync ON in Nvidia control panel 2) make sure to turn OFF all vsync in the In game settings (vsync should be on only in the control panel) 3) you do not need both reflex and an in game cap. Use on or the other. If reflex is available, put it on. If reflex is not, use an fps cap (I do 141)

To avoid complications, just cap your FPS below your refresh rate at a level where you're not GPU bound. In other words, when your GPU has headroom and isn't constantly running at 95-100% usage.

the ''best'' overal method of fps cap is using MSI afterburner+RTSS. The highest result fps cap are usually in game ssettings. BUT this is only if implemented right by the developer which is not always the case. it is a game by game basis. the gain of AB+RTSS vs in game cap is usually very small tho. i advise against using driver to cap this ads most delay. i do cap in driver on 300 fps to prevent burning and weird stuff. but this cap is not meant for gaming. just so that menus etc don't go crazy. delay caused by the caps are only a problem once reaches said cap.

The advice is in-game for the lowest input lag, but for me personally it depends on how good or bad the in-game limiter is. Some function poorly and cause bad stutter. A frame less of input lag isn't worth it if your game is unstable and stuttering all over the place, so I test it on a per game basis.

Youre having a bottleneck, thats probably cpu bound. When i have had what u describe its always been a cpu bottleneck issue. Find the setting thats pushing ur cpu too much and disable or turn it a step lower. This is why you want a gpu bottleneck cause thats the only part that designed to perform fine under that stress. There was a case where poorly coded game stuttered like mad at 80 fps and an fps limiter fixed it. So always look for outliers as well.

Windowed mode and fullscreen are two different ways games work. I too have noticed screen tearing and fps performance is different between the two options. Idk if it has to do with how windows is acting. Try turning up your desktop refresh rate if playing windowed mode maybe its pulling from windows settings. Some games like world of tanks have refresh rate option greyed out when in windowed mode.

I have both my Counter-Strike 2, and Fortnite set to V-sync OFF in game. But ON in the Nvidia Control Panel. Is there any benefit/downside to doing it this way? Or is this the correct way, or should i enable V-sync on in game as well as the Nvidia Control Panel? I just assumed if u changed the settings in Nvidia Control Panel, the settings in game would reflect the same. But that doesnt seem to be the case. Can anyone clarify if it's more harmful to change stuff in the Nvidia Control Panel, vs in game? Or what settings should be set in game, and maybe set diff in the Nvidia Control Panel? @@Rogers88 you dont have to worry about the low latency mode, as reflex mode overwrites this setting. All i did, (for fortnite and counter-strike) Go in Nvidia Control Panel, and Enable, G-sync, V-sync, and then IN GAME enable Reflex. (both counter-strike and fortnite have this setting) DO NOT do Reflex+Boost, unless you have a super high end PC. You DO NOT need to set your in game FPS cap, cuz again, w/these settings ur automatically cap'd at the max possible frame rate V-sync and G-sync allow. Partially true. It's an option NOW, but v sync in the radeon control panel for the longest time only worked in open gl games, so you had to use the in-game v sync option (not optimal because of varying implementations/buffers) for any game that wasn't open gl. V sync in the radeon control panel has only started working for all games (regardless of api) sometime within the last year or so. Not sure what specific update did it, but at some point the open gl limitation was fixed.
