I love your passion. I am so thankful for the blessing of your channel. I am learning so much but what really hits me is a lot of it is things I already know - but you're showing me a different way to look at things or advance on the little knowledge I have. I bought my land going on 4 years ago. One of my sons wanted to "get at it" - that is youth speaking. I have drawn pictures, moved things around 50 times and tried this or that on paper - over and over. I am finally ready to start making some of these dreams a reality but it took a lot of planning, frustration and as you say "using the locals" to come to the final plans. We also find God and His way of leading us into making changes. An elderly man who has lived and farmed here all his life but finds himself alone and feeling useless came our way through a situation I would have never believed possible. He wants us and we want him. He has the knowledge and we have the strength to carry out his suggestions. We need him and he will have all the family he ever wants. Ain't God wonderful when He works things out like this? Thank you, Mr. Billy. I appreciate you very much.

I love this video. We bought about 2 1/2 of undeveloped land in the Ozarks, it was logged years ago, so overgrown with red cedar. Our first thought was where to put in swales to slow, direct and utilize the run off. We were using the wood debris to build up those swales before we heard the word hugalkulture. We got here in September 2021 and I had to use self discipline to not plant any trees but it just wasn't a good idea yet. Here's to permaculture food forests! (I had no idea that was the name of what I planned to do here when I made the plan.) A teacher once told me that is basically what education is, 'learning the words for what you already know.' Thanks for your help in this process.

It was God’s will that I found your channel just as I started on this patch of ground. I’ve watched and rewatched all of your videos. Doing my best to follow your lead and advice. By moving the pigs through the pasture to massage and fertilize it. I’m going to try running the CToS through there when it dries out some. That will give me compost on the high side of the western boundary. Today is my 67th birthday and God willing, I’ll be picking up a used tractor with a loader on Saturday! If this comes to pass, I’ll be able to do the earthworks that I’d otherwise have to do manually. It would be a Godsend for my aging bones.

Thank you for this reminder! Not harsh at all. We all need to remember that we can be our own worst enemy when we rush. Newer homesteaders here and we are excited and on fire for this lifestyle but trying to pace ourselves to not make the bigger mistakes that are harder to fix. Our property needs some organic material and our goal this year is to focus on the water systems and soil building. This was very timely!

Comment from the choir. I was taught that man was given the task of tending His garden FIRST. Then the man was given a wife to help with the work. We will all, each individually, be called to give Him an accounting for our STEWARDSHIP of His earth and the resources He has given us - including our MINDS. I have been here on my retirement property for months, and had a consultation, but I am still cogitating and ruminating on how best to steward my land. It’s obviously been repeatedly raped by logging, and will take longer than I expect to live to be nurtured back to health, but like the journey of a thousand miles I will take it one step at a time.

By His grace, I have learned enough to be humbled by my ignorance, and I am terrified by how much He has blessed me, including repeatedly forbidding me to die from blood clots on my lungs. I have a relatively flat piece of land. And it is very wet . It has taken me 4 years to figure out how to manage the water. One thing I've learned is if you can work with what the earth seems to want... it can make life much easier.

I have something similar on my farm but it was covered by over growth and branches. Everyone thought I was nuts for dredging it by hand but now it’s so clean and never stops flowing even when the temp hit -25c

There’s a golden thread of wisdom hidden inside your comments. That “slow down” advice is important to each of us as stewards of our land. We need to Observe and let the land also teach us….it’s NOT just book-learning, y’all! It’s pretty amazing to reach that harmony wherein the land, the trees, the wildlife and the insects form a self-balancing environment. As one example, I have a “ditch” on the front of my property along the roadway. I’m the only one in the neighborhood that has encouraged this ditch to morph into an “ephemeral pond” wherein 3 species of frogs and toads live and breed. Not only is this stupidly enjoyable to my childish nature, it is also a great way to eliminate insect pests. Keep up that great guidance, oh guru of the land!

It was good to see someone do a video on water , not just trenching and diverting. back in 1999 we put in our first pond in a low area that was always too wet to drive on unless it was a drought year. In 2000 we had a second one dug in another low area. By the third year we put bass and sunfish in the first one a year later we stocked the second pond from the first pond. Then added 2 more ponds a couple years later.Now we have water,food from the fish and waterfowl that drop in from time to time during the hunting seasons.Wildlife benefits are an extra value with viewing . Also helps with watering the horses while grazing in portable fencing as well as the goat herd. well done sir! always , farmer john

I even built my own gutters for my chicken house, and I use that collected rain water to water the plants that feed my birds as well as when I clean the duck pond out, I use that water to fill it also.

I have redesigned a smaller backyard a dozen or so times. The more I learn the more I want to add/change. With heavy flood periods I appreciate the need for spillways and with long droughts between I keep reworking chinampas and swales. I don't throw any "plans" away. I file them away for rework and remind myself on ideas. //great video as always.

We move from suburban life to the country over the summer. We are trying find our bearings out here, but lovong every minute. Great and timely info. Recently during a heavy day long rain i walked our property and noticed how the water passed through our property in different areas. After seeing this video I have a whole new perspective on what I was noticing on walk, but I now know that it is something I need to examine and research further to benefit our lives and property. I’m still wrapping my head around what I’m learning in Nicholas Burtner’s online course and I’m less than a 1/3 of the way through it! I've got water coming out my eye balls! I am trying to figure out how to deal with certain muddy areas in my pasture. The ground is so soggy, my horse sinks right in. I need to get keep her out of the one area, but I also need to be able to use that area. I don't have heavy equipment, but thinking about renting a mini excavator to see if I can develop some control ditches. Not sure yet, still trying to figure it all out.

Loved watching this video! I just recently dug 3 ponds in my landscape. 1. Small pond fed by my greywater. That pond runs downhill to my fish/duck pond and if that pond overflows it runs further downhill to my neighbors 2 acre pond. My stream hasn’t run dry since i dug it!

I agree that we as people in general can add or take away from the land because of the timing versus what we want to get done now. I heard someone say its recommended if you could to camp your land a full year in a RV to see the sun and weather patterns. But yeah that's a great idea for a builder or someone that wants the best use of a big piece of land but everyone can't do it. That's why these videos are good and will never get old for last minute ideas someone may could use or need. Because I would be standing there like if a river is what it wants to make then a river is what its about to get lol.

As a near future Homesteader, my first mission will be to capture most of the rain water into the soil! I will do some land contouring to slow down the flow of this water, allowing it the time it needs to absorb into the soil! This is why I like slightly hilly land! I took my Permaculture course in 2014, in Australia and got certified to design!

Yes Billy, I did hear you tell me to do all this first before setting anything else up on our new homestead. And I hear you now. And I still haven’t. Lucky us, we are on a south facing slope, the entire place, some more steep patches than other. We haven’t had any catastrophes yet because we didn’t do that up front. The problem is who would we have hired to do it? I tried our county extension, they were off because of covid. Tried Penn state at department. They said they were too busy to come give any kind of a consult. They suggested a place in Lancaster that deals with agricultural irrigation systems. So we just never moved on it.

Good video Billy but please remember that that is not a High Tunnel it is your Fortress of Solitude and yes my friend your land is beautiful . A heavy equipment contractor once told me that water is the most destructive force in nature unless controlled and that seems to be what you are doing .

Good advice. I have lived up in the CA Sierra Foothills on my gentleman's farm. A lot of city folks come up here from the silicon valley to "home stead." The first thing they buy is a chain saw and they start Loraxing all of the trees to burn in their newly installed wood stoves. I'm not sure what they are thinking? I have had my happy 5 acres for 15 years and have not cut down or burned up any trees so far. Or some turn the properties into muddy feed lots. I feel sorry for the animals that live in the mud pits. Hey people it is 2022, you can farm responsibly with modern technology. Not everything has to be 1850s tech.

Although we have been on our homestead with our chickens and growing a garden to feed our family for 10 years, we have just now ventured out into trying to make our homestead work for us. We all do need a community that we can support and will support our efforts because these big box places are not going to feed us or support us. Thank you so much for what you are doing ❤

If you are using ponds for livestock, see Greg Judy’s videos for how to keep livestock from destroying your ponds. Cattle in particular can destroy a pond in short order. Managed properly, pond can last for a long time while providing water for cattle+, controlling runoff, growing fish, attracting birds and other wildlife, decorating your property and providing many other benefits.

IM looking at a 40 acre plot in Southern CO, but water needs to be hauled in, and looks as though neighbors haul in water as well. Not even sure if I'd hit water drilling a well. The property is backed up to a large hill, but that drains into DEEP arroyos on the property. CO doesn't get much precipitation, any insight here?

It’s hard to give any real advice without actually seeing it but I would definitely consider capturing water on every structure and putting in as many swales as possible.
