I am Tom Saguto, PGA Member and founder of SagutoGolf. Thank you for visiting my instructional page where you can find how to get on the fast track to improving your golfing abilities. Whether you are a seasoned golfing veteran looking for a quick swing tune-up after an on-course emergency, or a beginner just looking to get the most out of your golfing experience, I am here to help you achieve your golfing goals.
My mission as your swing doctor is simple, to help you maximize your enjoyment in game of golf. Because, let’s face it, golf is a hard game.
My philosophy is wholly based on the student having a fun, meaningful experience in a frustrating and complicated game where potential lifelong golfers either quit because it is too difficult or that they experience some form of swing-related pain or discomfort. I mitigate these problems by focusing entirely on the student’s needs and goals while teaching a golf swing method that ultimately takes stress off of the common pain areas of the swing.

Glad you enjoyed it, John! I replied separately to your email regarding the longer clubs and chipping. There is a short course on long irons and hybrids in the school. It's short because the swing is essentially the same for all clubs - just a few setup tweaks and naturally occurring path changes as we move from shorter to longer clubs. Also as mentioned in my email, I hope to see you participating soon in the members forum! TS

Tilting to the top has improved my striking skills to the point I'm consistently hitting the ball solid. The key point for me that triggered something in my brain & better understand my relationship with the ball. My accuracy also improved my GIR. Hitting the ball solid is definitely more FUN.

Exactly what’s on my mind Tom. What I was uneasy about was that as I tilted while reaching the top of the backswing I felt myself falling towards the target. At this point I can’t be swinging the club. Which is what I need to be patient about. There’s not enough discussion about the body rotating in the golf swing. The golf swing has to be more about swinging the body with the club attached. Falling towards the target isn’t the lateral movement. The lateral movement is part of the downswing. My best memory of striking a good drive was when I began to lift out of a crouched position.

I'm glad this one resonated well with you, Frank. Sounds like you have a good understanding of this, so I am confident you'll be able to work this into your swing through proper repetition. Thanks! Tom

@SagutoGolf
@SagutoGolf 2 года назад
That's awesome, @Ayatollah OfRoknrollah!! Here's some preliminary advice to help you get off to a good start in the school: 1) Regardless of a member's skill level, this swing necessitates a complete reboot for someone transitioning from a shift & lift swing (which is typically the case), and therefore it is imperative that one take sufficient time to ensure that the fundamental components are mastered. From the ground up there is nothing superfluous in the Stack & Tilt swing - in other words, everything with a purpose, and a purpose for everything. (For example, contrary to shift & lift where you may be taught to keep your trail foot perpendicular to the target line as a means of "creating resistance" in your trail side, in S&T we flare both feet out 10-20 degrees in order to facilitate a free flowing, inclined hip and shoulder turn.) I cannot emphasize this enough, as frustrations predominantly occur when students jump ahead in the curriculum without properly dedicating themselves to the foundational base upon which our consistently repeatable, powerful, low maintenance swing must be built. Chapter 1 of the Golf Swing Simplified program (GSS) and Part I of Get Out & Go Play (GOGP) both address this. 2a) GSS: One of the many great things about this swing is that you can achieve solid ball striking even at the most basic levels. This is why I oftentimes will suggest that students park themselves on Chapter 2 of the GSS course for an extended period of time after locking down Chapter 1's foundational elements. Chapter 2 reinforces the body motions and the weight-forward component, and it culminates with what I call "The Best Golf Swing Practice Drill of All Time". Work yourself sequentially and gradually through the chapter, and then commit yourself to that drill in Lesson 2.8. Learn it. Practice it. Master it. You can even use this partially abbreviated swing on the course and play quite well with it as it will provide plenty of distance. (It actually is the full swing minus just a couple of power accumulators.) Once you've got that down, you will be well prepared to move forward in the curriculum and well on your way towards taking ownership of YOUR swing! 2b) GOGP: This quick-start program is exactly as it sounds - it is designed to fast-track you out onto the course so you can have fun - and success - playing as you learn! Should you choose this path, everything in #1 above still applies, and as implied above in 2a you will still want to work through it sequentially and gradually, mastering each lesson before moving ahead to the next one. In this program, Drill #5 - The Flying Wedge is the one you'll want to park yourself on and nail down. 3) Also, as you progress always keep in mind the V1 Swing Video Analysis service, an effective and inexpensive service that I highly recommend to everyone in the school. I liken it to bringing your swing into the shop for a tune-up or minor repair. Scheduling one on a quarterly basis for preventive maintenance will do wonders for keeping things humming along nicely, and it's also a great tool for pinpointing and resolving any issues that arise. The process involves downloading the free V1 app and then submitting two videos to me through the app - one down-the-line (captured from your stance line, not the target line) and the other face-on. You'll find more information about the V1 Analysis halfway down this page on the Saguto.Golf site: saguto.golf/p/sagutogolf 4) Finally, please migrate over to the SagutoGolf Community Forum - which is included in your online school membership - and begin engaging with your fellow members. It only takes a minute or two to enroll - just go to your “My Courses” screen and you’ll see a link to get started. Once signed in you’ll be able to access and participate in the great dialogue that we are having on a variety of topics. You can start discussions, contribute to existing threads, post specific swing questions, make some new friends, and just share in the common bond of golfers from around the world seeking to improve their games and help others to do the same. I really think you’ll enjoy it! I look forward to assisting you through the school’s structured lessons and drills towards building a consistent, low maintenance, powerful, body-friendly swing that will bring your enjoyment of this great game to a new level! Tom

I'm 56 years old and a 5 Hdcp. I've always been a good driver and short game player to score. However, my irons were always weak, thin, with a pull-fade ball flight. I watched your videos for two days and then took it to the range. It took 1/2 a bucket and then I started hitting buttery crispy (like KFC) irons shot after shot. It worked with literally every club in the bag. Thanks so much for providing these videos and for making golf fun again. Tom, this is a great video as usual! Your channel has vastly improved my swing and my iron play is better than it has ever been. I am shooting in the low 90's and feel that if I can get my driver under control I can break 90 regularly! I don't know why, but I find tilting harder to do with my driver. I will spend the next few range sessions on applying stack-and-tilt to the driver swing. Again, I can't thank you enough for your excellent channel! You're the best!!!!!
@SagutoGolf
@SagutoGolf 2 года назад
Thanks for the kind words, Jeffrey - I'm very glad to learn of your progress!! Oftentimes when golfers are hitting everything well except for the longer clubs it can be attributed to one of the following: 1) They don't start with - or maintain - enough weight on the front side. In general with the longer clubs we should add a little more front weight load at address - more like 60/40 instead of the 55/45 prescribed for the other clubs. This forward weight should gradually increase to the top of the backswing (70/30) and build further on the downswing - approximately 80/20 halfway down, 90/10 impact, and 95/5 finish. 2) Their hips are not continuing their lateral slide through impact. This is common with the longer clubs as the wider stance means that the hips have a greater distance to travel. If the hips stop moving laterally towards the target on the downswing then their rotation takes over, changing the low point and rerouting the club. This can produce a variety of undesirable results including fat and thin contact, topped shots and popups, straight pulls, and “banana” slices. This recent episode may help: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-dB4ItR3guGU.html 3) They are not allowing the length of the club to dictate the backswing path and are getting too steep as a result. The shaft length of the longer clubs encourages more of an around the body backswing as established by the shaft plane at address. It may "feel" flat as you take it back along the shaft plane for the first few feet, but as long as you maintain the "weight forward, shoulder down, and hands in" components while allowing the club to work around you, it should put you in the proper position at the top so you can attack the ball from the inside. This is a very common situation as proficiency with the longer clubs tends to lag behind our progress with the short and mid irons. I used to play a ton of golf then I stopped for 15 years. Last year I picked up my sticks and caught the bug again. Goal was to break 80 again. I could not believe how hard it was to get my golf swing into shape. After trying Stack and Tilt with the help of Mr. Saguto, my iron play is better than ever and being 61 years old, I can say I hit my irons longer now than I ever have....unbelievable! Great!!! tip Tom, most people don't tilt but it helps to mitigate topping and slices as we see from DJ who's all kinds of contorted and is certainly still a top player. In fact I've noticed that some pros seem to be using very short shafts on their irons, like Keegan Bradley, and I thought maybe it's to get more tilt and force themselves to sit down so to speak during the swing, cause otherwise he's a tall guy and I don't think he would be "fitted" with such short shafts, any thoughts.

Hi Clark, I'm very glad to know that my instruction is resonating well with you!! As for my setup, the net is a DIY job. It is approximately 7’ tall and 8’ wide. We used this video as a starting point - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE--p11qs4E2T0.html - and then made some other minor PVC support structure modifications to suit our needs. We did not use PVC cement as this allows us to easily disassemble it if necessary. The netting we used is 10' x 10' golf cage impact net purchased from Amazon, and it differs from the screening material in the video. (By the way, if using a net like we did you probably won’t need the screw hooks that are mentioned in the video - bungees should suffice.) Also, I have a Real Feel 3x5 Country Club Elite® Golf Mat. @jbarry80 - That's fantastic!! I'm very glad to learn of your dramatic improvement through my channel's instruction content; nice job incorporating it into your swing!! Yep. Last time out best round of this year. Pars, bird, a few bogies nterspersed. Goal break par. So my swing thought was lead shoulder down along with straight left arm. I felt though I could get tilted better. So at top of backswing to finish it I focused on trail shoulder up! My tilt became better with morecturn. What happened was amazing. You know how you often say effortless. I experienced it. The downswing automatically happened with no effort. The ball popping off the face and going toward target. Not swinging slow or fast, just swinging automatically.

well, you have certainly perfected the move. and, you actually make it look easy. i have found it incredibly difficult, myself, and got to the point where i nearly gave up on it. but, recently i have been doing a new drill where i grip the club with only my left hand and hold the club out to my right, with my left hand on top of the club. then i wait a while. the heel pad of the hand has to press down on the club when you do this; and, pressure builds up in the heel pad to the point it actually sets the club in motion and continues it on its arc. and, the pressure that you apply with the heel pad, when you do this drill, really stretches the left shoulder joint in its socket. and, if nothing this has increased the flexibilty in my shoulder joint and gave me a real feel for being very much on my left side at the top.
@SagutoGolf
@SagutoGolf 2 года назад
I appreciate that. And I agree - there is much to be gained from being able to "sense" the shoulders, not just as a combined unit but also each shoulder individually. Thanks for sharing your method of building in an awareness of the lead shoulder and how that has helped you execute a good motion.
@DASH1ful
@DASH1ful 2 года назад
@@SagutoGolf yes, thanks for that. for me the drill has taught me that left shoulder joint extension is a driver in creating tilt. but, at the end of the day, the drill is good fun and it works. it's good exercise; and, it really helps us to develop strength and flexibility in our left hand. and, for me, i can only realease the club thru if i press my left hand against the left side of the shaft in the hitting area. and, the drill enables me to do that. the drill even has a moral that comes with it: "all good things come to he who waits". cheers Tom

I like your tilt video, I'm striking the ball solid however I'm hooking the ball. Does tilting cause the club head to close at contact?
@SagutoGolf

I'm glad you enjoyed it, Tim! Tilting should not cause the face to close. Possible culprits include: 1) Something in your backswing is causing your hands and/or wrists to close the face. 2) The downswing path is being routed across the ball (the previous two episodes address this). 3) Your grip may be too strong. 4) You are flipping or rolling the club through the zone. sounds exactly like me. though 79 only once (I had a great chance when I came off a front nine -1, but had a couple blowup holes on the back).

Definitely add all the dam icing that’s the best part ! Another great video Tom Tilt is a thing I definitely need to work on 😂 Being fat hurts tilt though so it’s a forever work in progress 😂😂

Thanks! I'm glad this lesson resonated with you, Jason! If you can stand upright and tilt your upper torso to either side, then you can execute the tilt in the golf swing! Understood and you do seem to hit crispier shots. But please explain your short video for long irons when you say buttons up. Did you mean less of a tilt than shorter irons? Thanks in advance. Plus there’s a video of Tom Watson giving a demo saying he didn’t realise until after approximately 30 years of playing, that you rotate around the (tilted) spine. 👍🏻

The "buttons to the sky" lesson does not conflict with this at all, Roger. That was a lesson on how to build in more of the extension component, but we are still tilting at the same time. Tilt, Turn, Extend!! TS

I just watched a video by you about lowering your hands and saw a definite weight shift.was that before you went to stack and tilt?
@SagutoGolf
@SagutoGolf Год назад
No, Matt - there is not weight shift to the trail side in my swing, including the video you referenced since my switch to S&T predates this channel by a few years. Having said that, this system certainly allows for some brief transfer of pressure into the trail side during the takeaway. After all, we are moving the mass of the arms and club backwards during that initial stage of the swing. Some like to sense the dynamic pressure shifts; others prefer the feel of a gradual increasing of weight load into the lead leg from the start. However, in either scenario the key here is that we do not allow our head - and thereby our swing center and low point - to drift back at any point. TS

Hey Tom, how do you hit up on driver with a left tilt? Everyone else on YT tells us to tilt our spine angle away from target to hit up on the ball with driver. Is spine angle different than tilt? THX!
@SagutoGolf
@SagutoGolf 2 года назад
Hi Rob, With regard to hitting up on the ball with the driver, perhaps with the exception of folks with slower swing speeds - or those Long Drive participants teeing it extra high and hitting maybe 1-2 balls out of 10 onto a 60-yard wide "fairway" - the path should still be ever so slightly down. In fact, believe it or not the PGA Tour average with the driver is actually minus (e.g.: downward) 1.3 degrees - nearly level - and it should feel level to you - but slightly down nonetheless! Thus, I do not advocate trying to hit up on the ball, and efforts to do so due to erroneous advice has caused many an amateur significant issues with their driver. (And always remember, I am most definitely not "everyone else on YT". 😆 But unfortunately, such sorcery from this dark underworld of golf instruction rarely finds its way to the mainstream because if too many folks found out about it the mainstream would then be rendered irrelevant.......) That's fantastic, Jack - nice job incorporating this lesson into your swing so quickly! When you consider that no less than 100% of the best players in the game tilt, it does make sense that we probably should as well, right?? Sadly, this critical component flies under the radar of most "conventional" instruction. Keep up the great work! Tom

Quick question, when you correctly tilt, which way does your lead knee face? Straight down, left or right?
@ironlyfe
@ironlyfe 2 года назад
feels straight towards target line but it probably comes a bit right as well something you really don't think about if your stacked over the ball and tilting in back swing everything sorta naturally happens
@SagutoGolf
@SagutoGolf 2 года назад
@Joe Youll - In this swing system the lead knee should not move towards the trail side. In the backswing the lead knee always works straight down in the direction established at address - which should be flared slightly outward towards the target. This keeps the weight forward and the swing center intact. Any inward movement of the lead knee will shift the center and low point backwards. This can lead to inconsistency and may also cause some discomfort to the knee. TS
