I purchased two, the 1 inch and the 1 1/2 inch. I have done it the traditional way for years in the Navy. I have to say, these make it so so simple. I highly recommend getting these, you'll thank yourself in the morning.

I just did a full "one pass" on the 1 1/2 inch mandrel, took 14 feet. That is the max from top to bottom. If i haven't mentioned this, I love these. As soon as I can afford them I'm going to expand my collection.

It’s amazing how much shorter the thing is after all the slack is drawn out! I learned quickly to make them a good bit longer than the desired finished length! No doubt about it though, this is an outstanding tool, and yields beautiful results!

the question is how to determine the length of para cord to tie a specific size of Turks Head. Here's what I do. first determine the size you want. Insert your pins. Then count the number of spaces in one up and down pass, they look to be about one inch to me. Then multiply that number by the number of bites. Then add about 3 to four inches just to be safe. Example: using 1 1/2 inch mandrel, I want a 3 inch Turks Head. So three inches up, and three inches down, total 6 inches. Times 7 bites is 42 inches. I want two complete passes so 84 inches or 7 feet. I'll add about 6 inches for fudge room. Hope this helps.

Holy smokes…. That is the BEST for,ulna for these things I have ever seen…. Actually it's the only one I have ever seen! But still, damn good explanation on how to factor out the amount of cord needed to make these bloody things!

Hi Tim, advice please! Looking to pick up one of these Mandrels, can only really justify one! Is it better to go for the 1” and then tighten down if the project is smaller or the ¾” and enlarge to fit something slightly bigger? Any help would be appreciated! Thanks
@TheWeaversofEternity
@TheWeaversofEternity 2 года назад
Hey there, if you really only want to get one, then I'd go with the bigger one. You'll have the option to cinch down in size as you said so it'll be more useful to you overall. I think it's easier to cinch down from a larger size, rather than make a small one and try to expand it.

you will have to buy the smaller version for 5B, unfortunately. Unless someone has figured out a trick to make it come out right by skipping pins

How do you figure out how much paracord is need? I know it will depend on the diameter of the mandrel and how wide of a wrap. Is there a formula?
@jimmiehall1725
@jimmiehall1725 4 года назад
On the 1 inch mandrel, it takes 8 feet to make one complete pass if you use the entire width.

The best way to determine how much cord to use is to follow the mandrel but ignore the overs and under. Just do everything over. Give yourself and extra 6 inches or so to ensure you don't run out of cord before you finish the knot.

I tried doing the Gaucho knot and decided to never try it again. May have to get at least one size of these. I seen a video of a guy fly through one of these weaves, but he did it with one cord until the wasn’t anything you could see, the weave completely covered what he was going around. Then he could spin it over and just look at it and know where he had to pull for the slack. I couldn’t believe it.
@TheWeaversofEternity
@TheWeaversofEternity 4 года назад
That's EXACTLY what happened to me when I tried to learn the Gaucho! Something about these style of knots that just don't really click for me, or perhaps I'm just not trying hard enough lol.

Or just grab some PVC pipe and make them to whatever size you like - take a look at ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ZOELuTmaHB8.html&feature=youtube_gdata_player I set up the long lines, measure down and then wrap a piece of paper with a straight edge and mark off the hole positions. Drill the hole as a tight fit for some small nails rather than tapping holes for screws.

You could definitely DIY a mandrel, but the whole point of this one is that it has the guide laser etched onto the mandrel itself, makes it much easier to learn how to tie the turk's head knots. I suppose you could always print a guide out and glue it onto the DIY mandrel, but that would take a lot of tinkering with getting the size right and what not.

The ONLY thing I don’t like about the jig pro mandrel is they are so bloody expensive! Way too expensive if you ask me…so, I bought a 2 inch diameter piece of pvc pipe and made my own mandrel… I also have a 1 inch diameter pvc pipe piece I used to make a mandrel from as well… life became sooooo much easier making these Turkshead knots…. Now, if I could only figure out how to make the globe knots…. 🤔🤔🤔

I guess you could think of the time you're saving when it comes to learning the turkshead knots. You're basically paying for the convenience and saving time. You can always make more money, but you can't make more time. So for me, that makes it worth it! LOL
