Little tidbit FYI, even Prince used the same musical motifs for his song Purple Rain, so basically you could overlap both songs and they fit virtually seamlessly. The greatest power ballad all time. All time male rock vocalist, him and Freddie Mercury are 1 and 2 in whatever order you feel better about. But not wrong either way. But if you hear Journey's "Mother Father" live in Houston 81, you might give the edge to Steve. There are a lot of babies born because of Steve's singing..... its possible it was in adam sandler. He's a huge fan of these types of bands, including Styx which Styx and Journey fans often overlap. Back then, the difference between good that released a couple albums, and great bands that released several were the ability to play live. Because digital music and auto-tune was not really a thing, musicians had to really know how to play their instruments live and with each other - not just record one at a time and layer them in a studio. Not all bands could do this. Journey was one of the greatest ever to do it live. The legendary bands you know of today: Van Halen, Def Leppard, AC/DC, Pink Floyd, Queen, Journey, Rush, Metallica, Iron Maiden - these are legendary bands - titans in the industry that have been around forever - because they toured all over the world to sold out shows for 10, 20 years or more! And just got better and better with each tour. Because they knew how to play live music. MOST bands made very little money from album sales. Touring is what made them money. That's why great live bands and tours led to longevity for bands playing together. By the way - it's 'riff'. Not 'rift'. A guitar riff.

I saw Journey several times in the early 80's. They sounded as good live as on their albums. They also had a great stage show.

The guitar player is Neil Schon. From the world of guitar players he is in the league of SRV, Santana, EVH, pick a few more. He is true genius with a guitar. He was in a all star band called Bad English with John Waite singing. Just as good. It was a all star band mind you

Hi MMB, this is a "perfect" song. Beautiful, emotional, somehow both sad and hopeful. I love the way the guitar and vocal build together in that great soaring final. On 70s-80s FM radio you would hear a wide range of song types, with hard-rock and prog-rock combined with pop-balads like this. Some Journey songs were so beautiful that I would get hooked. "Faithfully" was one of the songs that could appeal to a rock audience with that intense guitar solo, combining with "the voice".

Besides Jouney's Steve Perry, the other top rock voices for this period might have been in Boston and Heart. In terms of purity, power, and expressivenes. MMB has some Heart reactions, so try a reaction to "More Than A Feeling" by Boston. Awesome vocals, with great guitar and drums too. Queen also had top-level rock singing, though Freddie might be considered a great "vocal performer" rather than a "voice". I think Freddie's vocal "character" was as important as his vocal instrument.
