The song "Who Are You" was written after a drunken Pete Townshend got into a bar fight, and later a cop recognized him and let him walk home. In the late-70's Pete was feeling very insecure as the new Punk movement was rising, and Pete felt old. The snarling line "Who are you!" is challenging his critics, but it's also Pete questioning and challenging himself. Pete is one of the greatest Rock songwriters, often expressing his conflicted anger and sadness. And a constant search for spiritual meaning, particularly in his "Rock Operas".

@jraben1065
@jraben1065 Год назад
@@yenlard6683 Yes, it was the Sex Pistols, and apparently they expressed to Pete that they were "fans" of The Who. Not hard to see the connection between the angry Mods of 1964's "My Generation", and the angry Punks of 1977's "God Save The Queen". But many Punk bands did see the older bands as part of the problem, and Pete could see their point.

To see the real Keith Moon, watch "A Quick One While He's Away" from the "Rolling Stone's Rock And Roll Circus". It's a live performance of the Who's 1st "mini-Opera". It's not one of their "greatest" songs, but the performance is great, and it's the best filmed performance of Keith Moon drumming. This video will show you why Moon is counted up there with Bonham. For great studio work, try "The Real Me", from the rock-opera "Quadrophenia" 1973. Best Rock Bass you will ever hear, and awesome drums too. Also, "Won't Get Fooled Again".

This was the last record that The Who recorded w/ the original line-up... This video was literally shot in 1978 just before the drummer Keith Moon was found dead from an OD on pills that he was using to combat his alcoholism... The album 'Who are you' was a huge hit, but the album cover had a strange and tragic omen - it was a band photograph taken for the album, but Keith Moon sat on a chair that had the words on it... "Not to be taken away" 😲 Roger Daltrey (lead vocals) actually started as a guitarist in a London band, and he met John Entwistle (bass) who built his own bass in the early 1960's... They played R&B covers from America, and Entwistle suggested his friend Pete Townshend (guitar) join the band. Townshend was tall, awkward and shy... but playing guitar in a band gave him confidence to create this charismatic character on stage. Daltrey fired the singer they had and took over vocals... Townshend recalled that when they played live, he and Entwistle on guitar and bass respectively sounded "great"... Their drummer was lacking, so they fired him. One night when the band played w/ a fill-in drummer (They went by the name The Mods), Daltrey noticed a Beach Boy fan in the audience (He tried bleaching his hair blond like The Beach Boys, but it came out orange 😂) who cockily told him he was a better drummer than the one they had on stage... Yeah? OK... Go for it... His name was Keith Moon and he was a bit younger than they were. They put Keith Moon on a drum set and Pete Townshend started a song w/ the band... They recalled what sounded like a jet engine turning on behind them - Moon was battering the drums like a maniac, and they had never heard a drummer play that explosively. He was in... The band went through a few names... The High Numbers... The Who (Taken from a pub name - 'The Hare and The Who') They got managers interested in working w/ them, and they settled on the name The Who. Despite playing R&B covers, The Who were encouraged to write their own songs... Pete Townshend, as it turned out, was a gifted songwriter and composer... He was inspired by the band The Kinks to write the single "I can't explain" which was released in 1965... The Who's popularity in the UK rose fast as they toured ... Pete Townshend would write a bulk of The Who's songs, and bassist John Entwistle added some of his own... Roger Daltrey was the frontman who could bring the songs to life on stage and on the records. The Who had a very "retro" sound in the 60's and their first major hit was the song 'My Generation' ... it made them stars overnight between 1966 and 1967... By then, Pete Townshend met and became friends w/ the legendary guitarist Jimi Hendrix and the two bands went to the USA together to play the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967 where The Who and Jimi Hendrix Experience stole the show. Pete Townshend would routinely smash his guitar at the end of the set, and Keith Moon followed by trashing his drum set... That year, The Who appeared on live TV in America to perform 'My Generation' ... They had a small cannon installed in Keith Moon's bass drums that was supposed to end the song w/ a loud bang... However, Keith Moon (without telling the producers or the band) loaded the cannon up w/ explosives, and at the end of the song while Townshend was smashing his guitar and Moon was trashing his set, he set the cannon off. It exploded inside the studio near Townshend's head, damaging his hearing permanently... the blast destroyed the kit and slashed Moon w/ a cymbal... That moment made The Who a sensation w/ a dangerous reputation as a live band... they went up there w/ The Rolling Stones...

"Baba O'Reilly" is early 70s Who, this is late 70s Who. If you want to get into the band's development, listen to their 60s work. "Can't Explain" was their first single as The Who, "My Generation" was their first big hit. "Substitute" was another hit from that early period, one that got censored on some American radio stations though it contained no curse words. If you listen to it you'll probably be able to guess why it caused controversy in 1960s America (or at least parts of it). "I Can See for Miles" shows their late 60s style, more psychadelic -- ANGRY psychadelic, in that case. That was their sound right as they were on the edge of EXPLODING with their rock opera concept albums like Tommy. If you want to explore their softer side, "I Can't Reach You" might be a good one from that period to check out. They also started to explore more complex and esoteric ideas in their songs in this period, like war and gender roles. There are a lot of great singles from those concept albums like "Pinball Wizard" on Tommy and "5:15" on Quadrophenia, but to get the full impact you need to listen to those albums straight through. They did two more albums after Keith died, but it wasn't the same. Still racked up a few more hits in those final years, though, like "You Better You Bet" and "Eminence Front." Also, Pete Townsend wrote the vast majority of their songs, but bassist John Entiwistle usually wrote a couple for each album, and Keith Moon and Roger Daltrey wrote a few songs too. John's best known song for the Who is "Boris the Spider," but I think "I've Had Enough" is better.

The Who were considered the greatest live band of their time. No other band could match their brilliant combination of songwriting, musicianship and intense, energetic, madcap mayhem on stage. John Entwistle was a virtuoso on bass, but stood quietly while he watched his band-mates tear it up in stage. Genius songwriter, Pete Townshend jumped, leapt, and flew across on stage like no other guitarist. He is credited with inventing the power chord, by slashing his guitar in that iconic windmill style. Singer Roger Daltrey possessed the most powerful voice in rock and -like Townshend - incredible stage presence swinging his microphone like a lion tamer. And, of course, Keith Moon (the Loon) was absolutely the craziest rock star of all time. His unique drumming was impossible to copy, he sounded like he had six arms instead of two, and his bombastic drum rolls are legendary. There will never be another band like them. Greatest rock band of all time.

They are somewhat "obscure" Who songs, but have explosive drumming, and the Who enjoyed jamming with these new, early-Who's Next songs. @@yenlard6683 Hi Yenlard, no kidding, that's classic! Moon was constantly breaking his kit, even once they started using the strongest drum-kits manufactured. In the early days Moon had the standard "dance-hall" drums, which they had to tie together with rope, and he would usually break the kit in the first 20 minutes. The drumsticks lasted about a minute, and Moon often bounced the broken sticks off his kit, switching to new sticks constantly in mid-song.

I can't wait for more Whoooo! Following "Baba O'Reily", I would have suggested listening to the studio version of "Won't Get Fooled Again", the classic final song from the "Who's Next" album. This song, "Who Are You" is fun, and seeing the actual studio footage is great. But it's sad to see Moon in such bad shape. This was his last great studio performance. Moon still had some life in him, but nothing like his peak, from 1964 to around 1975-6. The live 1978 "Won't Get Fooled Again" video is Moon's last live performance, and close to death.

Kieth Moon and I think John Entwhistle were hanging out with a couple of friends at a bar who were thinking of forming a new band. Kieth asked what kind of band? Jimmy and his friends liked the name and thus a legendary band was born
@jraben1065

Jimmy Page wanted a band, intending to form a "super group" with Jeff Beck, and "steal" Keith Moon and John Entwhistle from The Who. Moon actually did a session with Jimmy and Jeff Beck, called "Beck's Bolero". Pete Townshend found out and was furious, and that broke up Jimmy's original plan. But then Jimmy formed a new band with three top session musicians he knew. Besides stealing the name Led Zeppelin, they "stole" Daltrey's new style, clothing/hairstyle for singer Robert Plant.

Their peak is, arguably, Won't Get Fooled Again (LIVE in Sheppardston Studios. Unbelievable!! And the version of Baba OReilly from the same show absolutely blows away the studio version you heard (not that the studio version isn't great). So, please: let that be your third song. This one BTW wasn't so much a promo...it was in the documentary on them called The Kids Are Alright.

I'm gonna say. I love this video performance of Who Are You, but the studio recording is better, the song is leveled up. BUT - that 's one of the things that makes this video super cool, it's live audio. But the album version is better.

7:47 That's not a bass. That's an acoustic guitar

They were great. I love your reaction to all music! I don't know if you have listened to the Meatloaf singin Paradise by the dashboard lights, I think you will enjoy. Heart, 2 sisters had a band, one plays lead guitar, singin Barracuda is another.

The video is good but the studio version better showcases their talents.

I grew up hearing the f-word on this song on AOR radio stations. Never figured out how they got away with it.

Since you love Meat Loaf's theatrical performance, I think you will love David Bowie's from the 70s as well. Sail by Awolnation is one I would like to see your reaction to as well.

Keith Moon is the most hard-core rock star of all time. Even GG Allen is a pale fraud compared to Moon.

It sounds like he's drunk and belligerent. Her thinks the people around him think they are better than him. That's why he angrily asks, ,"Who are you?" He even goes as far to ask, Who the fy## are you?
