I'm almost 6 years clean from heroin! There's only 3 end results for an addict - incarceration, death, or recovery! This is for those watching who may be struggling tonight with addiction! You CAN do it! You absolutely DESERVE to live a life unchained! If you fall, as many of us do many times, as long as you're breathing it's not too late! Just pick your ass back up and hustle for your recovery the same way you'd hustle to get that fix!
@@ethellittleage7000 Congratulations to you as well!! That's absolutely amazing! Life is beautiful on this side - not perfect! Just beautiful! Keep on keeping on, my friend!
@@douglasostrander5072 after some 30 yrs of trying, by the grace of God I took my last drink in 2007. It took a lot of getting back up from being knocked on my ass. Hang in there. It will come to you if you keep trying.
Ronnie wrote this song after Gary Rossington totaled out Gary’s brand new car while drunk and stung out on drugs just days before they was supposed to start out on tour it made Ronnie mad and he wrote this song to show Gary how stupid he was and wanted him to get clean.
Gary was fined $5000 by the band, but they were all still best buds.. They loved each other in spite of the drunken brawls.. it was all just guy stuff.
Seems to happen with bands. Same thing happend with The Band, Rick, Richard and Levon doing heroin, Robbie trying to keep it all together. Rick had a near fatal accident broke his neck and back, left him in pain for rest of his life, but got hooked on heroin because of the pain. Although I believe he did heroin before his accident, but probably was major reason he continued to use it. Too bad, such a talent.@@BST-lm4po
Thing I love about lynryd skynrd is that they are one of the most honest bands I’ve ever came across. There’s no gimmicks, no filler, no nonsense or profanity, either….just a group of normal looking guys who can play their butt off with good solid tunes. There’s nothing to sell, the musicianship speaks for itself
The Needle and the Spoon and That Smell were both cautionary tales written by Ronnie Van Zant with real life inspirations at their core. In a manner of speaking, both songs were meant to be 70's interventions done Skynyrd style!
Another point here, Gary was the one who wrote the chord progression of the song,so he had to be intimate with it to help Ronnie with the song. And I don't care what people say it takes days and weeks for a lot of songs to be completed to a finished product. Thanks for reading this, brothers and sisters of the Skynyrd Nation. Brother Gary
@@garytrew2766 I think you're mistaken. Allen Collins is credited with writing the song. If Gary would have written the cord progression, he would have been credited as a song writer too, but he's not. It's just Collins & Van Zant.
This song is about guitarist Gary Rossington, who was actually one of the survivors of the fatal Skynyrd plane crash. He is now the ONLY original member of the band still living.
Growing up in the 70s, to all this great music, we had no idea just how spoiled we were. These artists, the singers, keyboardists, guitarists and drummers were virtuosos. Very few bands out there now, that write and perform their own music. Back then all your rock bands did, only a few pop stars existed, like Cher and Streisand and they never wrote anything but their name!
LYNNYRD SKYNYRD, "THAT SMELL". MY FAVORITE SONG BY THEM. "WHISKEY BOTTLE, BRAND NEW CAR. OAK TREE IN MY WAY.. " YOU FOOL YOU, DON'T STICK THEM NEEDLES IN YOUR ARM"...THE MESSAGE WAS ALWAYS CLEAR...
@@rockinredneck57 True that. King wrote a lot of the earlier songs including sweet home Alabama. No one could pick that lead in to the song like King !
I've been a Skynyrd fan for years but I've really got back into them listening with you. Has to be in the top 2 or 3 rock bands of all time. Great lyrics, great vocals & without a doubt the hardest hitting instrumentation ever.
Hi Biz! Very cool choice & reaction! It's a heavy message on a sobering issue! Those southern boys made bangin' music, right!? Peace, love and stay safe! 🔥🤘
The part about oak tree you,re in my way is when mr.Gary Rossington hit the oak tree with his car but, thank GOD he,s free of all them demons now. they were all so young back then, he is in his 70,s now and much wiser. peace to you an stay safe.
The Honkettes vocals (backup singers) are impeccable. Yeah, after Rossington’s car wreck, and even before, most of the band was trying to clean up their act as they were in their mid 20s now and Ronnie probably 27. It is definitely an anti drug song.
Another great review!!! 🔥🔥🔥 Ya killin’ it fam!!! 💞 No need for me to repeat everything that’s already been said ... except for please keep up the Skynyrd reviews and THANK YOU!!! 😂🔥🎸🤘
He’s talking about one of the guitarist Gary Rossington he got in a car accident and just replying if he keeps it up he’s going to kill him self PRINCE CHARMING that’s Gary that’s what Ronnie the lead singer called him
either you've lived this song or someone close to you has. maybe not sticking needles but having close calls when you're stuck in that party stage of life.
I see you're a few songs in now on reviewing Skynyrd. I'm glad to see you're liking them and the sounds and messages they were conveying. You refer to them as "every mans band", and that's not necessarily a bad thing. As it were though, Skynyrd is the quintessential Southern Rock Band. They are the mark that all other southern rock bands strive for. And while there are others I'm not sure you've gotten to just yet like The Marshall Tucker Band, The Allman Brothers and The Outlaws, as good as they are (and they are great), they are not as good as Lynyrd Skynyrd. In my never so humble opinion.
Oak tree you're in my way...Great job reacting. Legendary musicians. They took this Genre around the world and rocked it. Skynyrd was the common everyday man's band. Mostly they sang about their own experiences , such as this.
I was a young teen awaiting their arrival at LSU THAT October. My state trooper dad gave me permission to go after MUCH begging without him. I was too young to understand this song. It's haunting now, yet TIMELESS. This is a GREAT GREAT song.
This is an anti drug song and Skynyrd has one also talking about the damage from guns “Saturday night Special” that is deep but with great song writing.
Great song! Another great message song by Skynyrd is “Saturday night special”. Great song, but doesn’t get reacted too. Also, “Ballad of Curtis Lowe”, great story.
Some of them were starting families and after the car accident and other things it was time to clean up. Unfortunately the plane crashed three days after the album, Street Suviver came out. RIP.
I’m 66 and I just recently discovered how Amazing Skynyrd is!! Sure, I heard Sweet Home Alabama on the radio in the mid- 70’s, but I had no idea they had so many freakin’ phenomenal songs!! Not to mention how Amazing they were in concert .. Been watching every concert and interview video I can get my hands on…. Making up for 47 yrs of missing out on Skynyrd!, Baby!! 💃
I really like how you noticed The Wonkettes on the backing vocals, and that arrangement was just so perfect to feature them here. They always carve out a space in the jigsaw puzzle of the various moving instrument lines and their arrangements to do whatever they want, and here they made sure that you could always hear their vocals as they came in, usually pretty high and on pitch. You can't work your way up to it you just have to nail it. And so there's space for it to breathe in the music, but then also, they slap some nice reverb on it and it's just perfect. The other thing that has always got me about the song is exactly what you said. This song really is a banger and not only is the musicianship good just the whole arrangement and how engaging it is makes you want to move. It certainly makes me want to move. And then the more the lyrics start to sink in, the more you're like what? Laugh. That's a great way to use tension.
Oak tree you’re in my way refers to Alan Collins crashing into the tree when he was drunk. And ludes was quaaludes with was a drug that really relaxed you. They were really popular and we enjoyed the cheap high. Allegedly!
I’m going to sit my grandsons down to listen to music that I grew up with, purposely playing this song. Music is one of the most powerful ways to get a message across. Thanks to Lynyrd Skynyrd for the song, thanks to you for this reaction.
You hit the nail right on the head he's trying to warn people but telling them that smell of death is around you don't do them drugs cuz you may not be here tomorrow ✝️✝️✝️🙏
I sometimes deal with people who have gotten clean from that part of their life - they have earned the right to say what they say and be critical in a way that no one else has.
Yes Sir! You really have his meaning figured out. Nice to see you enjoy these songs I grew up with; I am from Jacksonville, Fl. and I remember them as a local band before they became famous.
There is another group that I saw over 20 times live and now his brother is the lead singer of the group we still go and see him but I saw them live the first time I ever saw him as a 1969 then his scanner played at Woodstock that was at three day festival we were all rocking that in Woodstock New York it’s the most famous fest festival there was ever I go back a long way Liz the queen I’m going to be the queen love you
Just subscribed, like your reactions to music. So far only watched 3 Skynyrd reactions but gonna check out your others.Music really can bring us together
I subscribed to your channel because you be doing Skynyrd. Thank you for allowing the words of wisdom from Ronnie van Zant to enter into your life. You are automatically a better person inside just for listening to them. And in all their songs all three guitarist are always awesome and on point. 🎸🎸🎸🎤❤❤
Some people carry the aura of death, especially if they're self destructive. To say some has "that smell" is to say one day they'll probably die at their own hand, directly or indirectly.
Listening to your comment, you were dead accurate. They were singing about band member Gary Rossington, a heroin addict. This song is an intervention, before interventions were a thing. Kudos to Ronnie and the band members for caring enough to do it. I'm liking and subscribing. You do good reactions.
Really shows me how much I listen to lyrics as a teenager like intently because I would listen to the groove of this and party my ass off while he was talking about that🤣 and it just really didn't sink in because you when you're a teenager your freaking immortal at least you feel that way wait a few more years dumb s*** starts happening other people and you start to understand how fickle and fleeting everything can truly be
Fabulous! Thank you "Van Zant's inspiration for the song was the increasing reckless indulgences of the band members culminating in the evening when guitarist Gary Rossington got drunk and high and survived the crash of his new Ford Torino into an oak tree along Mandarin Road in jacksonville, FL"
Mr.Banker and Was I Right Or Wrong or two great songs that people seem to forget about sometime..,so May great Skynyrd songs to choose from...they are all good in my book 💯🔥🎸🎸🎸🤘🎧🤷♂️😎👀✌️
From Street Survivor. Steve Gaines first appearance on this album with sister Cassie as one of the ladies on background vocals.. Unfortunately there only album they were featured
People around the band told them their was a smell of death around them. Then they chartered a plane that Aerosmith turned down to the condition of the plane & the pilot & didn't get off the plane after an emergency mechanical stop . Then the plane went down & several people died.
Thank you for reacting to Lynyrd Skynyrd. You can't go wrong with anything 'Skynyrd. Please treat yourself and your audience with a reaction to "Call Me The Breeze". Btw, the backup vocalists were Cassie Gaines (who died in the plane crash along with her brother, one of the three guitarists, Steve Gaines, and band leader/lead singer Ronnie Van Zant), JoJo Billingsley and Leslie Hawkins. 😊✌
Ronnie VanZant was a total genius when he wrote this music, these songs are things that had happened in Ronnie's life. Give me 3 steps is a song that always made me laugh because I can picture Ronnie looking for that opportunity to run out the back door 😆
It's so easy to get lost in the six string brilliance of this song! By far their best example of the chemistry of Gary Rossington,Allen Collins, and Steve Gaines. All 3 amazing soloists!
The messed up part is as a teenager we all loved this song as we was all out partying. We never took the time to really listen to the words. We all thought it was talking about partying and getting messed up. It is but not in a positive way.
