I love the use of the word "Lamenting' here Matty. Henry Purcell wrote" Dido's lament" over 300 years ago and it heavily features a descending chromatic line ( albeit in the bass). Just show's how long we've been enjoying chromaticism in this context.
OMG THANK YOU I'm not a professional musician. If anything I'm an armchair scholar, elder emo and professional obsessor. I am however a "self training" vocalist and even after 15+ years of giving MCR some of the biggest rolling credits on my life, I hadnt approached (or revisited with manic abandon) my unfailing love for them in like a decade but now that my 30s are all about me self educating music theory, analysis, vocal craft and production (and a huge crisis recently)....I find myself 6 feet deep in the MCR rabbit hole. Instead of manically enjoying it for the love of it, decided to do something productive with my current state and so now I'm collecting education about this stuff. My personal, interdisciplinary musical study of MCR if you will. I dont know a lot about technical terms and videos like these are exactly what I need. I have found a PLETHORA of content I never knew existed of their live performances, but not a lot of content about breaking things down to the nitty gritty, which is a little sad. As a personal passion pursuit I am a vocalist so this is so helpful. And an academic at heart, these kind of tidbits really help to fuel my interest to learn more about terminology and the education side. Thank you. I really hope you have more like this and if you do, youll see more oversharing essays like these lol
Thanks, it's always nice to learn something new. Now I can say the chromaticism is my favorite part of Cancer. Would love to see a breakdown for The foundations of decay, such an emotionally driven song.
I'm so happy to give you that language! Are you a musician yourself, just an MCR fan? Both? I do enjoy foundations of decay, it's interesting to me that it has an almost prog element to it
@@mattygregmusic Absolutely, I think it's only a matter of time. I'm sure recording Foundations and touring ignited that fire to write music again. They're headlining When we were young on October this year, so I'm hopeful we'll get something by then. Yes, I saw them live in 2008. Sadly, they never came back to Argentina.
@@MrAdeist gosh i hope you are right i am dying for some more music from them!! Ahhh i hope that show was great, and you'll get another great one soon!
I mainly play the bass guitar, I also play piano, but I love singing too. I’ve written a few songs and have been focusing on music theory to make them more interesting and powerful. Your videos are always good for music theory stuff
