People have asked me how I overcame my fear of spiders- this spider was a HUGE help. The bold jumper is one of my absolute favorite animals of all time, and I can't wait to share it with you!
Subscribe: / mywildbackyard
Here at MyWildBackyard we investigate the secrets of the natural world- secrets that can be hidden in our very own backyards! I want to share the incredible world of insects, spiders and other wildlife with you and inspire you to explore your curiosity. Get out there, and find your adventure!
For those who read the description- we've updated the channel! I'm working on adding more features to videos to better expand our conversations about the secrets we find in the natural world! Introducing the Creature Tier System! There are four rankings:
1. Staple - These are the lowest tier creatures. They are the most common species in a given habitat, and while they're not boring, they're really only exciting when you're exploring a new habitat and you haven't seen them before. Not something to write home about.
2. Neat - These are a step up from Staple. They don't make your entire day, but they are worth taking a closer look at when found. Definitely can be exciting to have a productive day finding many Neat species.
3. Wild - These are exciting to find. Whether they have interesting defensive features that offer a nice challenge in the field, are particularly cool looking, or maybe a little bit rare, Wild species aren't necessarily the MOST memorable of encounters, but they definitely make your day when you see them. An adventure featuring many Wild species will truly be memorable.
4. Gem - These are special. Usually involving extremely interesting biology and significant rarity, Gem species are animals that you really do not see every day. These species can make your whole adventure, and will be very memorable.
5. ???? - Is there a Creature Tier above Gem? Stick around to find out....
Each of these Creature Tiers are a spectrum, and we can debate the placements of various animals in the comments section!

I remember as a child being bored and finding a tiny jumping spider. I sat their and spoke with it for a very long time and it just did its thing, staring at me as if it understood me. The experience always stuck with me. Its interesting seeing this as a 34yr old and people now realizing they may be smart.

from what i uinderstand as a non-expert, these spiders are capable of retaining short term memory, so while they are limited by their spider brains from being able to feel emotions or form bonds, the spider when it looked at you was probably putting two and two together and thinking "this thing just helped me get from one place to another, neat. on my way now". while i wouldn't go as far as to say it was saying thanks, these guys are super inquisitive so it probably indeed was thinking "hey, interesting"

I think the jumpers are so expressive because they can actually see us better. Their eyesight is much better at seeing from a distance than most spiders, so they can clearly follow your movements while you look at them and they look at you, curious. it's fascinating to see it literally turn its head sideways and upwards to look at you in the video, and to think it might actually recognize/realize what it's looking at is a face of an animal at least as intelligent as it is... i hate spiders, not outright arachnophobia, but close to it, they are disgusting to me, and this little buddy... still is, to a degree, i wouldn't be willing to take it on my hand, but... watching it, I've realized that a large part of the reason why i hate/am afraid of spiders is that they at the same time look extremely alien, and give off extremely... non-intelligent vibes? like, there's no way to "communicate" with them, to negotiate, as you can with most animals. this one, though, actually seems to percieve you and consider you, the possibility of some way/degree of communication seems to be there, and it makes a big difference.

@@piscessoedroen yes. what's strange, though, is that if i'm not mistaken, dogs do it to put their ears at different heights, which changes the timing of when sounds from certain directions reach each ear, making their sources easier to locate in space (as to their vertical position)... ...and i don't think the same reason is applicable to the spiders, so it all the more seems to me like the human meaning of the same motion, the "i'm examining you"...? i am probably utterly wrong, but that's my instinctual impression of it.

I overcame my fear of spiders whilst living in Australia of all places. Partly of course this was due to exposure. There's only so many times you can freak out over dinner plate sized Huntsmen, and extremely regular occurrence around the home, particularly after you've come across the deadliest spider on earth the Funnelweb several times. Add to that the Australian version of the Black Widow, the Red Back, is absolutely everywhere. But whilst exposure took away the fear it was an Orb Weaver that turned acceptance into fascination and ultimately into affection. To watch that amazing animal build her little house out of two leaves stitched together and then construct the most intricate and utterly vast web and go about her business was utterly charming. The day I realised my transformation was when one night I came home and in the dark didn't notice she'd build right across my door and ended up with her and her giant web all over over my face and found myself far more concerned for her safety than freaking out about the spider on my face. Having rescued her from her experience I carefully placed her back where she usually built and thereafter would handle her when she built in a place that I knew would make her vulnerable to a human catastrophe. What I didn't realise is that orb weavers are very prone to bite, and its painful if not dangerous. I guess I just got lucky with my one. That little Orb Weaver's beauty and charm gifted me a lifelong respect and affection for spiders and has saved the lives of countless of her fellow creatures who I now go to great lengths to rescue, if they need it, or allow to share my living space unmolested. Funnelwebs however still put the hairs on the back of my neck up, quite literally, the reaction to them is pure instinct and utterly visceral. I once put my shopping down outside my front door whilst I hurried in to answer the phone only to have one run into the bag and ended up with it crawling onto my hand as I placed an item on the shelf. They are the ugliest most menacing and highly defensive spider that you never want to meet. Red Backs on the other hand are absolutely everywhere, you'll regularly come across them, they're always near you, you end up with close encounters on a regular basis, and no Australian takes the slightest bit of notice of them. You have two choices when it comes to arachnophobia in Australia, get over it or emigrate. Spider dramas are a national pastime in Australia. My cousin and I were crossing the Harbour Bridge when a large species of tarantula emerged from the wing mirror. We laughed as the poor chap clung on for dear life only for the tables to turn when we slowed down and he seized the opportunity to make for safer ground. Unfortunately this involved bolting in through the window onto the dashboard up the strut onto the ceiling and positioned himself right above my poor cousin's head head. I had the choice to keep my mouth shut for fear of him freaking out, or run the risk of it landing on him. I calmly explained his predicament and gave him a running commentary as we couldn't stop on the bridge. When we were finally off the bridge we we still stuck in the middle of several lanes of traffic and couldn't get to the side of the road. As the situation became ever more precarious we decided the only option, when we got to the lights, was to hoof it away ahead of the cars and take advantage of the gap to pull over. We did this and leapt out of the car closely followed by the spider who ran across the roof of the car. As the traffic passed us everyone was laughing at two grown blokes leaping out of the car like a jack-in-the-box, and we grinned at them sheepishly. Everyone knew exactly what had happened because just about every Australian has been there, done that, and got the T shirt.

I cant help but freak out over the cellar spiders in my house. They love the bathroom. I got up to use the toilet one early morning and had one half dollar size chilling out under the shelf just inches from my face. Had an equally large one join me for my bath on another occaision and crawled on my arm. Tired of getting surprised by them. We are at war.

Snakes have always been cute to me, since as a kid, I always found it funny that they're just moving noodles with an attitude. I have to admit that I'm not entirely impartial to all creepy crawlies though, seeing as despite how much I like jumpers, orb weavers, wolf spiders and tarantulas (besides maybe the King Baboon and Goliath Birdeater), there is something about certain species, such as the huntsmen, that triggers what little arachnophobia I have in my body. We had a '66 Plymouth Fury towed into the shop a couple of years ago that had been sitting under a carport for probably 20 years. When we opened the hood to look at the engine there were millions of daddy long legs all over the engine compartment. I'm not afraid of much so I was just fascinated by how they would all start bouncing at the same time when they felt threatened. Unfortunately my boss decided to spray them with carb cleaner which pissed me off because all life has meaning and purpose but some people just don't understand that. So I can sympathize with your being afraid of spiders and working in the automotive industry because I get bit all the time sticking my arms and hands into dark crevasses under cars and trucks. I won't kill any spiders even if they're poisonous, I just scoop them up into a cup or box and take them outside so they can do their thing. None ever bit me, in over 20 years of handling them. Mostly I just admire them, and they studiously ignore me. But I love em now! No not ALL spiders, but most. Thanks for showing this gorgeous lady!

Found my 1st bold jumper a month ago while painting my garage! Didn't know what she was until I saw your video... She had orange on her abdomen which I think makes her a juvenile. She watched me VERY closely for about a minute while we sized each other up and as I scrambled to get my phone out for a pic, then we both calmed down. I could tell immediately she was probably smarter than I am😆 Wish I could share the pic I took! For someone who's terrified of spiders, I gave myself a pat on the back for calm behavior! I just posted this under a different comment here, and then I read this comment of yours. Interesting: it's fascinating to see it literally turn its head sideways and upwards to look at you in the video, and to think it might actually recognize/realize what it's looking at is a face of an animal at least as intelligent as it is... i hate spiders, not outright arachnophobia, but close to it, they are disgusting to me, and this little buddy... still is, to a degree, i wouldn't be willing to take it on my hand, but... watching it, I've realized that a large part of the reason why i hate/am afraid of spiders is that they at the same time look extremely alien, and give off extremely... non-intelligent vibes? like, there's no way to "communicate" with them, to negotiate, as you can with most animals. this one, though, actually seems to percieve you and consider you, the possibility of some way/degree of communication seems to be there, and it makes a big difference.

So I’ve suffered from arachnophobia for a while… I’ve literally ripped cloths off and ran down streets to avoid them, and just the sight of them used to give me “willies” for several hours after. Noticing this though I’ve slowly started working on getting over the phobia and by learning more about jumping spiders, I’ve slowly started coming around. I can now see pictures of spiders without immediate fear and willies, and I actually got to handle and play with a small jumping spider today without panic. Other species still freak me out, but as long as they’re small and I can keep and eye on them, they don’t bother me as bad. I still have a long way to go, but learning about these little guys has helped quite a bit.

The isolated little farm I moved to last year, has been helping me get over my arachnophobia-in the strangest and most unexpected way. This time of year is the monsoon season, but is also the tarantula breeding season…and it turns out that I have a lot of them living underground on the perimeter of my property (which I accidentally discovered last summer when walking my dogs late at night and I nearly went insane and burnt it all to the ground with a flame thrower 😂). But before doing anything irrational (like burning everything I own and probably half the mountain down) I researched the crap outta them …and once I found out that a healthy tarantula population would keep much, much worse things in check (like highly venomous spiders, scorpions and even some venomous snakes) and I saw that they don’t move nearly as fast as wolf spiders do (and they are SO BIG that I can spot them a mile away and avoid them when doing anything outside at night)…I can finally say that the giant furry boogers are kinda growing on me. I’m definitely not going to try holding one anytime soon -but my lifetime of a complete, irrational fear of ALL spiders is slowly ebbing away (at least with _these_ specific spiders). I occasionally even find myself talking out loud to them when I’m working nearby their burrows during the day and I apologize for making so much noise while they’re sleeping-telling them that I’m the new landlord and I’m just doing some routine maintenance around their properties. (Don’t judge me-it gets weird when you live totally isolated from other humans for long periods of time!) 😂

After about a year of that, I joined a Spider ID group on Facebook so I could try and study/understand the ones around me a bit better. (Luckily there is only one medically significant spider in my area, and they're incredibly shy and avoid humans at all costs [kinda like most spiders lol]) Eventually I let a coworker know about all of that, she offered to give me a pet jumper of my own. I had little Cobalt (named after the absolutely gorgeous colouring of his Chelicerae) for a little under 2 years. When you announced that a spider was likely watching us right now, I laughed and looked at mine’s cage. It actually surprised me when you said that the bold jumping spider was a big spider, considering how big my spider, Gwen, is. My pet jumpers often will start chasing the phone lens down (in a cute non-aggressive way lol) which makes for great shots and videos! They are definitely noticing us and the lens, no coincidence!

I absolutely love being able to handle both jumping spiders and wolf spiders, and do so whenever I get the chance. I love the way they look directly at your face, or how they pay attention when you wave your finger in front of them. I once sat with a jumping spider for roughly 2 hours and just let it jump between my fingers, they really do give me the same feeling as being around a cat or dog. Benefit of the spiders is that I'm not allergic, so I can handle them without a second thought.

Man, I've always loved jumping spiders. They are probably the only spider I can stand to touch, much less get close to. So adorable.

I've been trying holding some bugs and spiders lately and it's so cool. I never knew how chill they were! nothing dangerous of course but still 😅

These are so common where I live that I'll see one just watching me on the computer or looking up at me when I'm in the garage doing something. Love the little green color

we have a bunch of jumping spiders around where i live, and i love them, they can be super playful, and they help out a lot on bugs. one time i was out hunting, and one climbed on top of my crossbow scope, then onto my hand. it was so adorable how it walked a little ways, then cocked it head and body to the side almost like going "what is you? i think i like you, but not sure. youre big and warm and not hurting me, so i think youre chill"

My youngest daughter has been collecting jumping spiders... She has also caught an orb weaver of some sort. It is all spikey looking. Pretty cool looking.

I’ve never been afraid of spiders. I live in Canada where the majority of wildlife is not venomous enough for a human. I used to watch the spiders on their webs, I’d catch frogs, junebugs of all ages and where I lived was the garter snake capital of the world. It was great to grow up there.

I encountered two of these in one day. One was in my bathroom. I surrounded it with my hands and let it out outside. It was calm the whole time and wasn't afraid of being on my hands. Later, as I was leaving, one was on my car. Same species. Large black ones. Largest I've seen in Wisconsin. This latter one did not like being on my hand and kept jumping off. I love how ever two of the same species have their own personalities. Don't be afraid of jumping spiders. They are the coolest, and they don't bite.
