Surprise! Been swamped working on writing my thesis. However, I've just finished writing and am now preparing for the defense in June. I’ll be moving back to RU-vid full-time after that and will be putting up more content across all the channels once again! In the meantime, here is a little something to get everyone excited for fall.

I am a retired biostatistician SAS programmer located in LA and I am going hunting in Québec, in a government park/reserve. Same forest, same grouse. I only hunt grouse and I hunt like you do. I watched your videos to get into the vibs. ;) I hunt with a 28 gauge or a 20 gauge both semi (only 6 pounds gun); my 12 gauge semi is too heavy. Thanks for the great video of grouse walking in the forest. I have a weakness: it is hard for me to see grouse in trees. They surprise me everytime. I am training myself to look at tree branches more.

Really enjoying your videos. I'm in CA and have never been to the Northeast but I plan on driving to Maine next October and staying for 4-6 weeks. Last fall I drove to the Arctic Ocean in Alaska and got Willow Ptarmigan, Spruce Grouse, and Sharptail but the Ruffed eluded me. On the way home I drove through Montana and got more Sharptail plus Hungarian Partridge and Sage Grouse. Hopefully in Maine I can get the Ruffed Grouse, Black Duck and Eider.

Jesse, congratulations on earning your guide license! And you’re completing your thesis for a degree! Masters? Well done indeed!Congratulations and be well. - Bob With the lovely feathers from those grouse, who needs pricey Hungarian partridge feathers for tying flies? And those tail feather will serve quite nicely for Muddler Minnows instead of turkey. Or do you hunt turkey as well?.
@MainelyOutDoors
@MainelyOutDoors Год назад
Thanks Bob, this is for my Ph.D. in Biomedicine. Also, yes they have great feathers for fly tying in addition to being delicious. I typically use them most for soft hackles, streamer hackles, and the tail for nymphs' backs. The only problem is they are a bit more delicate than turkey feathers. I don't hunt turkey much but all the turkey feathers you see me use in the tying videos come from this bird my friend put me on a few years back. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-XMlRt7tYHn0.html
@FlyTyer1948
@FlyTyer1948 Год назад
If you want to toughen up those grouse tail feathers (or turkey), Jack Gartside taught me to coat both sides with thinned Dave’s Flexament. Nowadays, I use Solarez Flexible UV Resin. Even used ina vulnerable position like the fins on a Muddler Minnow, they will hold together pretty well. Wow, a doctorate? That’s really impressive, especially with all the outdoor & video stuff you are doing. Well done indeed! Been back over to the Penobscot yet?

Love your videos. My buddies and I walk-hunt without dogs, so it's really helpful to see how you do it without dogs. A few questions: What time of year was this hunt? About how far do you walk swiftly before you stop to listen for grouse (you mentioned that the ear typically gives them away, not the sight - would you say that's the vast majority of the time like greater than 80%)? Also, you mentioned they typically wake up with the sun. Are there times of the day that you will go back to the cabin because it is very unlikely to see any? Around 10:06, you describe the exact dilemma we always have. We generally see around 30 birds over the course of the weekend but are lucky to leave with 2-3. Not sure if our shooting is just that bad (I don't think it is), but one big thing I notice is that we generally NEVER see them before they flush whereas it seems like you see most of yours before the flush. Please keep up the great videos and any advice you have for non-dog hunters would be extremely appreciated! Thanks so much for any feedback you are willing to provide!

Surprise, grouse are not exclusively herbivores. I cut open a grouse once whose crop was chock full of big fat slimy slugs. Surprised the heck out of me, too. Couldn't imagine anything would want to eat a slug, but there they were, not the tan colored ones but the bigger fatter grayish ones with the mottled dark markings on their skin.
@indyreno2933

@banjohappy, actually, all gamebirds (order Galliformes) are exclusively herbivorous, what you witnessed is only because gamebirds only do so to supplement their diet.
