Hi friends - A reminder that BLACK LIVES MATTER! It’s important to remember and consider BLM in all aspects of your life, including your plant hobby! I’ve created a doc that specifically considers ways to support BLM in the plant community. This is created by me, a white woman, mostly for non Black people (but all are welcome to peruse). This is an ever-changing doc and I welcome all questions/concerns/recommendations in my IG dms (@goodandplanti). The doc: bit.ly/2CrEzoA
@@jjbentley9 that’s what I’m trying to figure out I’m African American, I’m just doing plant research. I’m black & dont gaf about BLM it’s a darn scam 🤷🏽♀️
Polly for some reason reminds me of dragons and game of thrones. There's some long boi philodendrons out there that look like something straight out of Tim Burton's imagination and those evoke feelings of spooky season for me.
See I'm the kind of person to wear black in the summer and neon pink in the winter. I really think this is an all year beautiful plant. Same with all plants really. I love my bird of paradise in the winter and my bonsai evergreen in the summer 🤷🏼♀️
So the fact that leaves go light green is normal? And I wanted to change the soil (leave in same size pot) because I saw a net around the stems can i still do this in the winter time?
Dormancy is not normal for these in the wild. It's just an emergency crash measure to deal with cool temps. There is no benefit or reason to let them go dormant, but if you can't keep them up around almost 70F (minimum at night), then they will very slowly start going towards dormant. It can take many months, and some people don't see them dormant except in Spring, when they finally succumb the culmination of the long winter fighting low temps. They prefer it very hot. 90's F are wonderful for these if you can keep them watered, but they do ok in the 70's as well. You can wake them up from dormancy almost instantly (2-3 weeks) with a heat mat (careful to not let them dry out too much). They will also grow faster with several hours a day of direct sunlight, if it's not at midday. Rinsing the leaves at every other watering eliminates spider mites. Higher humidity is not needed at all. PS: I"ve been growing Alocasia for over 30 years :)
I just got one of these, it was on clearance, and I think I made a mistake lol I live in Montana. Always up for a challenge with a plant tho. Thanks for the information!
After having a Silver Dragon Scale for about 10 months, I realized alocasia thrives in my household and that I am able to make them happy! So yesterday, I bought myself an Alocasia Polly. Thanks for the care information!
Gotta add my personal experiece here: you can avoid the winter dormancy entirely if you keep temperature/humidity at relatively tropical levels, and move it to a window with more light (but be sure to move it back in the summer, as you stated it burns the leaves)
I love the fact that you actually said what number you let it dry out to on the moisture reader. That definitely helps a new plant mom like me! Thank you!
I just bought my first Poly. I'm a sucker for this deep green color! Definitely a dust collector, but it's so gorgeous I don't mind. What I learned already, after a week is it really does need that humidity you spoke of. I wanted to keep it in my bedroom, but had to move it to the plant room. Thank you for all the tips, I know they will come in handy!!
Thanks for sharing. I viewed your video months ago and forgot to leave a comment. I did remember to give you a thumbs up. BTW I propergated the corms in Perlite as well as in mosd and they both worked. Yay me considerimg the Morher plant went totally dorment and I thought she kicked the bucket.🤣😂
My alocasia polly is in the brink of death😭. There’s been some construction happening at my house so my plants have been moved around quite a bit that is why I have not been able to really care for them. Hopefully the tips I picked up from your video will help my plant babies.
Help help help needed! My alocasia disconnected from it's corm, root system. 4 lovely, spotless leaves but the bottom apears rotted, don't know how. I only watered it twice, had it only a month... how in the heck did i overwater? No idea. But now I have the corm, on one side still looking firm and ok, and the branch system apart from it,but maybe I can save them both still? My question is should I stick em into water+ spaghnum moss, pon,or repot it into soil? Please let me what you think,i could use the input please🙏
I am of the opinion that it would be ridiculous to water my plants with anything but the regular tap water. If they cant make it with that, they are not for me. Who wants to have tons of distilled water retainers around when there is a perfectly good water source in tap water? If I had rain water or lake water at my disposal, that would be a different thing.
I have bought an Amajonica plant that has only one leaf and another new one is coming soon. Now I have noticed that the tips of the leaf there is a sap hanging. What is that why it is there or is it normal? Please advise me. Thanks
What are the brown tiny lines on your leaves? I have that to on my large Polly , it’s an insect? I have it a two different genus also . Can someone tell me?
Thank you for your hard work and for sharing it with the world! Curious now if that little bulb of yours took off eventually :) Please share if it did. Just got my first Alocasia Polly today. As they arrived at our Superstore, the price was 24 (CAD), I was like I'll wait.. It's been about a couple of months I think, and today we just came in super early in the morning and she was there alone, I suspect she was the last one to go, and they reduced the price to 5 backs. She's mine now :) Hope she'll survive cause it was +5 outside and we carried her walking for about 20 minutes. Hope it wasn't long enough.
My daughter dropped my alocasia and it hasn’t been wanting to grow. The main leaf where the new leaf comes out is drying and looking shriveled 😭😭😢 will it still grow?
Two years ago I had an A. 'Frydek' and didn't know anything about them and freaked out when all the leaves fell off in winter. I also didn't know about bulbs regrowing so I threw it out 😭Now I have two alocasias and praying they do well in the winter 🤞🏼
i feel like that happens to a lot of people!! that’s why i wanted to put the video out right as fall started lol. i’m sure your alocasia will do just fine this winter 💚
@@ShockerThere11 Mine lost literally ALL of its leaves during the winter. It was heartbreaking and I thought I lost her but now she's pushing out new growth like crazy so they come back.
Just got an alocasia sarawakensis and it is putting out a lot of new growth even though it's late November! Should I lightly fertilize it to support the new growth even though it is dormant season? It's also dropping a lot of outer leaves, so I'm worried it's lacking nutrients to support the new growth.
Sorry this is late, but yes definitely. There is no real dormant season, they just die back when it gets cool. If yours is growing you do want a lightly fertilizer, since they are heavy feeders and resist bugs better when lightly fertilized frequently. I fertilize mine (been growing them for 30 years now) at every single watering very lightly.
Very helpful I purchased my son a alocasia 5 days ago and it had about 8 leaves but 3 were slumped when I purchased. I was about to cut one I’m glad I didn’t. I grow plants but this one was lovely and just seems so unisex I wanted something that looked strong in his space when he comes from college to visit. So you’ve given me a few tips and I’m grateful 😇
Thank you so much I really really enjoyed listening to you about the Alocasia Polly, I’ve just brought one, and I’m going to try to make it work. I’ve got a few plants so I’m hoping this one will be fine.
I absolutely murdered mine😅 I think I watered it way too much. I’m so sad about it.. I’ve been struggling so much with my plant care, slaging so much..
It’s poisonous mainly for consumption unless you have sensitive skin then there might be slight irritation. But it’s more so poisonous for small animals especially household pets
hi if anyone can answer this for me, I accidentally left mine in the sun, the leaves look a little droopy and aren’t waxy anymore, is it going to return? or will they look like this forever :(
new to your channel. thanks for the alocasia tips. new to the plant collection. also, i bought a ficus tree and i'm having some problems with it. lots of perceived problems. not sure what is natural and what needs help. any tips?
Hi, I Just Repotted My Alocasia Polly. Now My Leaves Are Turning Brown/Yellowish 😭😭 How Do I Revive It ?? I Live In Alaska & The Humid Is Already Cold Since Its The Beginning Of Fall Season
I believe this is from the soil moisture, gnats love that environment, there’s lots of tips online of how to get rid of them, but I can’t remember the specific ones !
I came here because the tips are turning brown and the lower little leaves are turning yellow. But that’s because I leave the window open for fresh air and a new leaf is coming in. Thanks for the help!
I've been gardening for 2 decades. Subtropical plants, edibles carnivorous plants. Of of each )Nepenthes) is 3 meters in Length. I have great success with my growth and feel like i have mastered it a bit. But never grew indoor plants. I bought one Amazonica Polly. Fell in love with its Tim Burtonesque looks. Not much luck.. This plant i totally destroying my green thumb. The plants are whithering down. I reppotted them into a perlite+sphagnum moss+pine bark mix and into a larger pot. In one of the plant all the leaves whimpered down. So sad...I bought 3 more, and havent watered them whatsoever. Fingers crossed. I am really in love with this plant. and that purple maze in the back!... Perfect video for what i was looking for. An experienced, well displayed grow guide for this specific plant. And with 60s letters?! Come on!... Perfect. Thank you.
Don’t feel bad, I’m a plant seller and I offer these often..I’ve never had a good experience with them indoors only in a greenhouse environment not saying they can’t be inside but for me it’s a no 😂
How are they going now?! I'm feeling very discouraged as I love this plant and mine is also not thriving! Would love to hear of your progress after not watering!
Hi! Loved your video! Please can you help me though I think my alocasia has root rot. How do I check for this and treat it. It’s only affected 1 leaf so far the rest are still healthy.
thank you so much! lots of people have been asking me about root rot and i WISH i had a video about it done already to help. in short, take the plant out of the pot and look at the roots. check for dark coloration, mushiness. if you gently pull on the root and the outer layer comes off - it's definitely root rot. there's tons of videos out on root rot that would definitely help you if you need more in-depth info!
i’m really love this plant, but i have somehow convinced myself that i’ll kill it😭. i haven’t killed any of my harder plants like my calathea😳, so maybe after this vid i’ll look around for one.
my alocasia are doing well so far! plenty of foliage, so i have not touched the bulbs. i have a different video where i do dig up and store caladium + oxalis bulbs 😊
It's a mix of pest prevention (i usually recommend neem oil), distilled water, dish soap, and a little bit of essential oil. I go over it in my latest soothing sunday video!
