In today's video I finally get my 12 valve swapped explorer to drive down the road! This giant 6BT Cummins engine was way too big for this tiny explorer and it took a ton of modifications to make this diesel swapped 4x4 work.
Now get out there and build something!

Thank you everyone for your kind words and support! I've received a few comments asking about camber and rear driveline angle so I thought I'd address it here. I haven't actually set the camber yet, it's still set to whatever the junkyard axle came with. I'm hoping I can get it close with stock-like camber bushings, but if not then more radical measures will need to be taken. The pinion angle matches the t-case angle, but it is a little extreme. The rear suspension right now is basically just stock suspension with a spring over axle swap and so the pinion angle shouldn't be an issue with how little travel it has. I will upgrade the rear in the future to match the front travel and while I'm doing that I will make the pinion angle much more mild. Thank you all for your input!

The ironic thing is that I was in the process of putting rubber protectors on the cables to prevent shorts when it happened 🤣. Forgot to undue the battery terminal first

I definitely commend you for getting this all done. Your pinion angle scares me haha. You should cut the spring perches off and adjust the pinion angle properly and weld em back on. Lastly the camber seems crazy out of whack as well. I believe you can get adjustable camber sleeves to correct some of that for cheap
@BuildSomethingAuto
@BuildSomethingAuto 2 года назад
Thanks! Yeah I haven't actually even adjusted the camber yet, I'm hoping I can use camber bushings to get close but if not more radical measures will need to be taken (cut n turn). The rear suspension is close to stock and will eventually be upgraded (just a spring over axle swap), the pinion angle is set close enough to the tcase angle for now, but when I upgrade the rear suspension it will need addressed.

@@BuildSomethingAuto based on your build cut and turn beams would probably be your best bet. Of course try camber sleeves first for now but cut and turned beams would be awesome!

As soon as you said the steering was shaking I thought the lines are backwards. I haven’t had that issue with steering but have seen reverse line issues and they do weird things.

What a cool and unique build! The driveline angles and camber look kinda off, but I'm sure you're working on a solution.
@Akya2120
@Akya2120 2 года назад
You should probably get some more negative camber in those adjuster bushings. Did you cut and turn the beams? You might have to depending on your 'lift" amount (difference from factory ride height angle for the D50 TTB). I know you can taste it being done though. I'm excited for you!
@BuildSomethingAuto
@BuildSomethingAuto 2 года назад
I havent adjusted the camber yet from what the junkyard axle was set at, heres to hoping theres enough adjustment left! Otherwise like you said a cut n turn will be in my future.
@Akya2120
@Akya2120 2 года назад
@@BuildSomethingAuto I hate to break it to you, but that's going to take a cut and turn... Just looking at the beam angle going down the road. Factory they were just about flat, so that's about 4" lifted from factory. I hope I'm wrong, but I forsee some welding in your future.
@live2ridegsxr1000
@live2ridegsxr1000 Год назад
@@Akya2120 I was thinking the same thing. I've got 4" lift on my bronco and mine isn't this bad on camber. I'm correcting mine with bds drop brackets, but he will need cut & turn. What a build though, you sir have tons of patience
@Akya2120
@Akya2120 Год назад
@@live2ridegsxr1000 drop brackets are inferior to cut and turn. It bungles the steering geometry and induces bump steer. It also gives the beams more leverage over the subframe, which means the subframe gets more load. It's like trying to run in high heels vs sneakers. I definitely understand the appeal of using drop brackets though. I cut and extended my beams... It was a hell of a job, but I got it done and it was worth it, but I don't know that I'd do it again lol.
@live2ridegsxr1000
@live2ridegsxr1000 Год назад
@@Akya2120 no argument here. I don't have the time, money, equipment, patience, or experience to do the cut & turn. I'm just installing the BDS 4" lift with the supplied drop brackets

The ford 250 coils spring fit in the same spring top bucket as the explorer??? Are they the same diameter? How many inchs you gain in lift?
@BuildSomethingAuto
@BuildSomethingAuto Год назад
I think they were actually f150 springs. They fit the explorer buckets for the most part, but the springs have a little retaining tab on the top that didnt fit. To get the right height I bought lift springs then cut off a few coils which removed the "tab", so im not sure how much lift youd get swapping them straight over (also my axle was from an f250 modified to take coils instead of leaves so that changes it slightly). ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE--XC0_05dT0s.html

Worried that once you do a real road test and the tires heat up, you will lose your clearance to get back into the garage. ☺️

Everything 🤣. Full body off “resto” mod. The frame is boxed, 3/4 ton axles front and rear, nv4500 manual trans, np241DHD transfer case, slight body lift, transmission tunnel cut and remade, customized motor and trans mounts, modified driveshafts, front clip from the ram truck so ram radiator and intercooler, modified fenders and front bodywork… Im probably forgetting some stuff, theres videos of all of it on my channel 😉
