The first Mexican El Diablo showed up in 1946 but at least 6 years earlier Ronrico released a cocktail called the Diablo and it was the same as the Trader Vic's version except it used rum instead of tequila. Like most of cocktail history, it's hard to say anything definitively. While you might come across a recipe that predates another in print, it doesn't necessarily prove that one came before the other. When it comes to the Ronrico guides, there are hundreds of recipes and none of them show credit for who created them. The Mexican El Diablo is just another example of a cocktail that is attributed to someone (Trader Vic) when it's very likely that it originated somewhere else with a different base spirit.
Use your favorite ginger ale or ginger beer. The difference between the 2 might be distinct for how they're labeled in modern times, but 100 years ago you'd find the two terms often used interchangeably. Fever Tree is good but use whatever you like.

I think a Make and Drink and Glen and Friends "Cocktails After Dark" episode is in order. "Tiki After Dark", maybe?

I keep a bottle of Cassis around for just this cocktail, it's probably my favorite "Mule" type drink. My specs are a little different though, I think I got this from BB Remixed: 1/2 oz. Lime Juice 3/4 oz. Crème de Cassis 1 1/2 oz. Blanco Tequila 2 oz. Ginger Beer

Great work as always, Derek! I wanted to apologize about being negative on your one video with the Fire rum. It's a lot of work for you to produce these and you don't need negativity. Thanks for the videos and care you put into the production of them. I always feel at home in your bar and enjoy spending time here. I wish you all the best.

This is one of my favorite quick drinks (tequila version). Creme de Cassis is an underrated ingredient.

That Zombie recipe looks very similar to the one in the 1950 Spievak cookbook, which the author credited to Donn Beach (the most significant difference being that recipe includes 151 Demerara rum, and I think Jamaican rum too). That is a big bombshell: Beachbum Berry figured that Donn Beach most likely created that recipe as an easy-to-make at home drink, which would also throw imitators off the scent, and that if he didn't, then "Spievak is the greatest mixologist the world has ever known." The 1940 recipe makes it clear that whoever created the drink must have taken if from the Ronrico book (or possibly an earlier source?) Although adding overproof Demerara rum is something Donn Beach would do, it does make me wonder if that riff may have been the work of someone else, perhaps Spievak...

I don’t know how ground breaking the Ronrico recipe is. Back in 1940 there were various Zombie recipes floating around with passion fruit. My assumption is it’s related to the 39-40 World’s Fair where Monte Proser was serving some type of Zombie (not 100% sure on this) but there are Zombie recipes from 1940 in newspapers including a syndicated column that contains passion fruit.

I am going to make the Mexican El Diablo for cinco de Mayo! I have the Irvin Ware lime squeezer and it sucks but beautifully made. Your video production is fantastic. What is the IRE of your wide shot 80%?… looks great. Your music selection is very impressive too. I really enjoy your RU-vid channel. Keep up the great work!

Thank you! I actually don’t deal with or pay attention to IRE. I’ve just spent a lot of time dialing the exposure I want and I never really move or change any of the setting in my main camera.

I might give this a try with some blackberry-ginger soju I picked up - gotta use what's on hand! Or even the black currant Riga Black Balsam 🤔

Do you know the brix level on your Creme de Cassis? I only have Cassis and I assume the difference between the two is only the amount of sugar.

I don’t know and can’t even test it since it has alcohol in it.

A Trader Vic recipe that turns out to not be his own cocktail? *Gasp* I am shocked.
