I love Pusser‘s version! It gives me hints of dried fruits and Malaga ice cream. The orange juice does give me a little more acidity but I urge anyone to try it with blood orange juice. I tried the original piña colada and found it quite boring and the painkiller became the preferred alternative for me. Both these drinks don’t try to put the rum up front and that’s perfectly fine as it’s a tropical tiki drink and a lot of people just want a juicy cocktail rather than a stiff drink. There are countless other options if you want something stronger ✌️
Do you ever make or use anything other than that 60-second orgeat? Since discovering that method, I don’t see any point in making it any other way. It’s the best. Occasionally, I’ll reduce it slightly on the stove though.
This video upset me a little. You came across a little different. Anyway, the og recipe blows. Way too much OJ. The Pussers version is the best, but I personally back out 1 ounce pineapple for 1 more ounce of coconut cream. Best one I've had in the Caribbean? St Maarten Yacht Club
@makeanddrink I guess I find it hard to believe. Nobody likes that much oj in their drink. I definitely prefer Pussers and always have it, just for this drink. It's ok, I'll still watch your channel 😄 as I think you do a great job. I really appreciate the Columbia. State Park thingy... I lived in Calaveras for a while. Cheers.
@chrisgeorge2717 ok but serious questions… how is 2 oz of orange juice and 1 of pineapple so much worse than 4 oz of pineapple and 1 of OJ? This is what I don’t understand. Both fruit juices that lack acidity. Much more of it in the Pussers version.
@makeanddrink fair enough. I guess personally, I don't care for the oj that much at all. I'll squeeze a fresh 1 oz in, but again, I'm more about the cream of coconut. Why? I guess because I feel like in St Maarten, it was very rich and creamy. 4 oz of pineapple is probably too much too.. which is why I guess I reduce it and add more coconut.
Great video! If you’re gonna do painkiller riffs, I would definitely recommend The Remedy from Existing Conditions. Punch has it on their website. It was one of my favorites to get before they closed.
I didn't know that people had a strong preference against orange juice in cocktails. I wonder if it has anything to do with the fact that there is such a profound difference between fresh squeezed OJ and anything you can buy commercially? I'd imagine most followers of this channel are squeezing fresh, though.
The main argument against is that the flavor doesn't hold up so it mainly adds dilution as well as it's lack of acidity. Several of the prominent Tiki figures are OJ haters.
It is hot today, and I live closer to ocean than you, I think.. but for the drink.. I don't like pussers because it gives me a headache, I put 1oz OFTD and 1oz demerara rum. Also, instead of OJ, I put .5oz lime juice.
Screw Pussers! This is the first drink I shook that made me go "Oooooh i get it" so I'm especially bitter that they trademarked the name of a cocktail they have no claim to, just so they could push their just passable rum. My spite for them only doubled because of a bar owner I worked for who was a weird british navy larper (he was just a huge dork and had never been in the navy) who was obsessed with the brand.
I watched this and immediately had to make it, used a fine Irish gin “ninth wave” which is 40% abv . I’m gonna give it a try with the export version which is 46% abv I find the cocktail fresh, light, citrus but with a perfect sweet balance, just delicious PS as everyone has said, the quality of your production is outstanding
My liver and kidney are glad you never mentioned Kraken…they’ve suffered enough at the hands of that demon. Yeah, it’s not the greatest, but it’s not the worst. But it’s also what I have the best access to and I actually do enjoy it.
Hmm been a while since I’ve had a painkiller. Found them too sweet but quite fun. Was serving them without booze for the younglings and they enjoyed them.
I use the trademarked recipe, but cut the pineapple juice down to 2oz. For the rum I use a mix of any 2 or 3 rums (1oz each) One of my favourite cocktails that way! I will say that I only recently started using Pussers, and I think it works great when mixed with another rum (I use the gunpowder strength) Great video
Thanks! Great controversial topic and presentation. Thank you for asking and answering the tough questions regarding this drink. It’s one of my go to drinks. I recently acquired a bottle of soggy dollar dark rum to try. Wonder what I’m gonna make? 😉
I like the version from PKNY. Get the cocktail paired down to right amount of juice so you know you're actually tasting a cocktail. Obviously I bump up the recipe to 2 oz of rum. 1 1/2 oz Virgin Islands Rum 3/4 oz Coconut Cream 1 1/2 oz Pineapple Juice 3/4 oz Orange Juice Nutmeg
Love the video! Appreciate the history, research, and commentary, as opposed to just another recipe video. This has been my favorite cocktail channel on RU-vid lately.
I've acid adjusted the "original" version I made here and didn't like it as much. Sometimes I'm cool with it not being "acid balanced." But I'll feature some soon that are acid adjusted.
I made painkillers last night, following the Pussers recipe. I didnt have orange juice so I used grapefruit juice but I'm not sure I could tell the difference. Goes to show how little the orange juice is doing in that drink
Thanks for the video! I was able to get to the Soggy Dollar by foot, need to crawl under a few fences 😊. They handed me a glass and a bottle of Pusser’s. You poured as much rum as you like and they made the drink!
Great episode. I have been a big fan of the Soggy Dollar for years. Last October we went to the Soggy Dollar to have their version which was made with their original Soggy Dollar Dark and then lunch next door at Hendo's Hideaway for the Original Pusser's version. I liked both but noted that the Soggy version was lighter and that I could drink those all day long where as the Pusser's version was deeper and more complex like you had noted. It definitely tasted a little more heavier. Here is my video of the trip and at 3:53 you can see them making the Painkiller at Soggy. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-UT5DWjPG9g0.html Thanks for this video.
I am unfortunately one of those chumps who buys-in to the pussers branding of the painkiller. I have a recipe that suits my taste, which is strong and sour: 2 oz pussers gunpowder proof 1 oz coco lopez 1 oz orange juice 1 oz pineapple juice 1 oz acid-adjusted pineapple juice Sprinkle of salt Shake with crushed ice and dump into chilled glass. Garnish with sprig of mint and plenty of nutmeg. I find that the acid really makes the drink pop, and the chocolatey smokey flavors of the overproof rum hit you in the face in the best way.
Wicked history lesson! I knew Pussers were pushy on the trademark but had no idea they had little to no influence on the recipe and name. Definitely gives me a new perspective on the brand. Thanks again for the wonderful content!
The best Painkiller is the one that washes the salt water out of your mouth after the swim in to the Soggy Dollar. BTW, many people take a dinghy in to the beach, so they don't swim.
RIP, PKNY. I am 100% with you on the ethics of this cocktail and on how best to make one for home use. I was hoping for a bit more from the Cruzan Single Barrel when I made one with it a while back, but I still prefer it over Pusser's. I'm honestly not the biggest fan of Painkillers, but I thought the version in Tropical Standard was pretty damn good (big surprise there /s). "Who of has has not done that ourselves?" Lmao.
I have read the story back in 2020 and god that guy Tobias stinks of being an awful prick. He's just what we call in French a parvenu who just thinks he can buy and own everything and everyone. The story by pietrek and even the guy's own interviews back that up.... I will never ever buy Pussers rum and I'm telling the story to anyone who did so they feel bad about it.
@@makeanddrink yep hard to feel empathetic for 1970s equivalent of a crypto bro complete with his 37-room house, 4 Ferraris, 2 Rolls Royce’s, a 57-foot yacht and a yacht with a pet cheetah and a pet chimp.
