I've used a Maasdam puller for several years. I use a 150' rope without a hook end, I either tie a loop or use a dogbone knot tool. To get better leverage use a fishing pole to cast over a limb, tie your rope to the fishing line and retrieve it around the tree, loop it, pull it tight and you have a high pulling point.

Ralph, I’ve had several viewers tell me they removed the hook and used another option for securing the device. Had to look up what a dog bone knot was but that is definitely a good one, I believe some people call it a soft shackle. Thanks for watching and commenting 👍TCT

Nice demo. Thanks for emphasizing not using a cheater bar. Used a 2,000 lb come-along and 1/2" wire rope to to hold my jacked-up late 1800's 2-car garage while I was re-building a foundation wall. It also moved the garage wall one foot to align it over the newly constructed foundation.

I had 2 trees go down in a strong storm. I wanted to save both trees. As they are both mature shade trees. Removal would have been very expensive and replacement would take many years of growth time. On the biggest tree is used several cable winches to get the tree back up. I drove multiple t-posts into the ground for a base anchor. I attached heavy tow straps to the upper tree trunk. By cranking each of the winches gradually I was able to progressively raise the tree back in place. I used a total of 6 winches and 6 straps. The tree is currently supported with 2 straps to keep it as straight as possible to allow the roots to gain strength to hold the tree. Before winching up the trees I aggressively pruned and thinned the branches to lighten the upper weight. Both trees are doing well. Thank you!

Alex that amazing, it's the first time I've heard of a operation like that. It will be interesting to see if the roots grow deep enough to hold the tree up. Let myself and my viewers know how this turns out in the future. Thanks for sharing, watching and commenting, TCT

I sure could've used that when pulling my brother's pickup onto a trailer with no winch. Or the time I forned a horseshoe stake in a bucket of concrete, then had the bucket get away from me, and roll down the steep hillside (virtual cliff) about a hundred feet. In both cases, I had to do the job in short stages with a come-along, tying the load off after every cycle of the come-along. That's a must-get, must-have tool!

Around the farm I have four come a longs. A one ton, two two tons and a four ton. It's rare for me to use a rope but if you're carrying the puller in a car for field use then a rope would be lighter. I use chains. One short one for connecting the puller to structure like the base of a large tree and twenty I've foot chains for distance. Normally although I use the puller for many things for me it's the best cheap tool to pull up trees. You need a puller (my four ton) a small chain to strap the puller to the base of a secure tree. Chain to reach a tree I want to pull up and most trees can be pulled up when they are two foot or less in diameter. You'll also need a wide pick axe and a shovel. Use the axe to chop all the major feeder roots around the tree and you may need to dig down a little to find the main feeder roots. Then wrap a chain as high up as you can reach on the tree trunk hooking the puller to the chain with as little slack as possible. Start working the puller and the tree should start to lean toward the puller. If you cut enough roots the weight of the tree will help you pull it over. If it won't budge chop out more roots and keep pulling until the tree begins to fall over. Make sure you have a clear path to run to the side to avoid the tree although in my experience they tend to pull out and fall over slowly. After it's down you can continue pulling it until the root ball comes out of the ground. Now no stump to deal with. Pines are even easier. Just work the same way chopping the feeder roots. Now pull until the tree is bowed as much as you can get it without damaging your puller. Dig a hole next to the back side of the tree until you can just get below the root ball. Take your pick axe and strike the tap root just below the root ball. It should snap off cleanly with the tree falling over along with the root ball leaving the remainder of the tap root a foot or so below the ground surface. I've cleared may trees this way in my younger years but now in my 70's I keep a large case backhoe around the farm and simply dig up trees and push them over with the hoe. It's really the same technique. You break the feeder roots by digging around the tree and then push it over with the hoe.

Ha ha Dave, I’ve done the same method’s you have mentioned but as we’ve gotten older and wiser we let heavy equipment do most of the work. This is a great tool! I use it in applications were I cannot get my skidder and winch close enough. Pulled a number of trees leaning out over main roads back to fall the opposite way. Once the tree goes the way you want it to fall it is a good idea to release the holding paw and of course have enough rope and get out of the way, by releasing the paw it allows the rope to freely pully through. I have had instances were I didn't release it and the rope got hung up on another tree and pulled tight causing the tree to swing another direction or it puts alot of stress on the tool breaking it or burning the rope as the force pulls it across the locked drum. Also be mindful if attaching it to a tree that you do not want to damage, use a tree savor or heavy rope instead of a chain in those instances. Definitely a great tool to own for alot of uses. 👍

I work in tree removal. I bought on of these to assist in pulling trees in the direction of fall. The problem with this tool it will loose grip on the rope if slack is interduced in the pull. This is why it sits in the back of my truck and the cable comealongs are used. OK for non critical pulls. Not for felling trees in residential areas.
@TonysCoolTools
@TonysCoolTools Месяц назад
Alex, thanks for sharing. I’ve not experienced the issue you are talking about yet. Hey Tony! Could you test multi pulley block and tackle? Old timers and Amish still use them. I've used small outfits to stretch fence myself! It would maybe save some of that hyper speed motion on the rope puller! Chris will be able to tell you how much better that hyper speed works if you play some banjo or other 'country' stringed instrument at the same time. It's tough being a modern type super hero, believe me, I know!! Not like the old days when you could be a super hero without much fuss! 'Course it was even easier if you were a mild mannered newspaperman!! But a mild mannered firewood chucker with great firewood wealth keeps him under the radar pretty good. Jury's still out on mild mannered tool guys!! So many little details! But you still da' Man!!!

12:52, FWIW, I think it'd be better to put BOTH blue ends through that carabiner. If you check out hoisting and rigging info, what you have there (and earlier in the video) are called "choker hitches", which are not as strong as a "basket hitch" like if you had the carabiner through both end loops. Also better than the basket hitch is the double wrap basket hitch (assuming you had a strap long enough) where you'd make a second loop around the bars and then use both loop ends to hook into the one carabiner. Anyway, those straps are probably stronger than some of the other hardware and more than sufficient in almost any configuration, but hey. :-) Thanks for the video. I'm probably going to get one of the rope pullers after watching this.

I am very new to this. When you put the rope around the tree, did you place the rope in the hook or did you actually tie it off? Also, you stated the ATV weighs 2000 pounds and that the unit has a 1500 pound capacity. How is it that you were able to use this to pull the ATV on the trailer? I’m trying to learn the safety rules. Thank you so so much for your time Sir.

Craig regarding the tree I just put the rope around tree and clipped on the hook. Regarding the UTV, though it weighs 2000 I’m not lifting the machine totally all I’m doing is pulling ATV or UTV up a ramp. The weight is considerably less. Thanks for watching and commenting 👍TCT

Never choke with a strap when you can just as easily basket the same rig. You just halved the strength of the strap and likely will stress the choker as it will slide the strap on the other eye, eventually doing harm to the choker!

Is 100 ft sufficient for pulling down trees or do you sometimes need it to be longer
@TonysCoolTools
@TonysCoolTools 5 месяцев назад
That all depends, if you have a tree close to use as an anchor point. In 90% of the trees I’ve used the Maasdam puller the 100’ of rope was plenty. If not I just add additional rope. Thanks for watching and commenting.👍TCT

Also a comment about the way you use synthetic strap. By chocking it… You typically loose 25% or it a .75 multiplier. By using a basket method, you double the WLL… Why not show, basket, strongest method?
