I feel the same way about this. I'm Korean-American who never liked Korean food, but love macaroni & cheese, sub sandwiches, pie, ice cream, cheeseburgers, and pizza and pasta most of all -especially pizza with extra cheese -and Mediterranean foods in general. Guess I'm a "confused self-hater" according to these "progressive" White people who think they're qualified to be our representatives, to assume how we perceive things, since I prefer Western foods and don't fit the stereotypes of my ethnicity. Why does everything have to be about race/ethnicity/identity politics for these people? It's not about outside appearances. We all have a right to enjoy good food and the good things other cultures have to offer without them sucking the fun out of it for everybody, just because they THINK we'll find something "offensive" about it. Things like food and music, etc. are universal. I actually like how others are really into the K-wave, for example, and enjoy Korean cuisine; it's not "racist" for other groups to enjoy that. In Australia in the 70s we had a lot of Vietnamese immigrants arrive. Suddenly they started winning award after award cooking some of Australians most iconic dishes. Every person I've met from other cultures love when we embrace theirs. Chinese people especially seem to really appreciate when Westerners go out of their way to learn their language/culture.

i understand your point, but dumplings arent exclusively asian. every single slavic country in europe has a traditional dumpling recipe, most of them were also chosen as the national dish. dumplings are just dough shaped into some kind of half circle and what you put into it is your choice. nothing to "respect" there. respect traditional recipes, but you're allowed to change the recipe if you want to (essentially what US americans do with italian dishes lol). so i agree with the comment above me

Yes, there was a similar situation that happened at the Museam of Fine Arts in Boston. They created an exhibit where anyone could wear a kimono and experience Japanese culture. However, it came under fire for "cultural appropration".I read the article in the Boston Globe when it happened and they gave the names of the principle protesters. They were all Asian but not one actually had a Japanese name. Meanwhile, the only people present who were actually Japanese were counter-protesting in support the exhibit. Sadly, the bad guys won and the trolls succeeded in getting the MFA to back down. It removed the kimono exhibit. All of the actual Japanese people in Boston were very saddened by the loss of the chance to share their culture with an outside audience. Legit human connection was sabotaged by a bunch of college kids hopped up on ideology -- sign of the times.

My Arabic grandmother was almost in tears when my German friend asked her for a recipe of a dish she just made for us before she could even ask if we liked it. She wrote down all the ingredients tried to explain the whole process in french wich they both barely speak but it's their only shared language, later she had one of her kids translate the instructions to English, just to make sure and even offered to cook it again the next day so he can watch. But yeah ... my evil friend clearly tried to culturally appropriate my grandmother (such a hatefull and racist perspective that does more harm than good ).

Food, like music carries past language and culture barriers. And just as you love other cultures enjoying bits of your heritage, I love seeing people who've been immersed in their own genre of music hearing the genre I've grown up with for the first time. Because underneath the noise of music, and the chewing of food, there's a human language that everyone understands.

Food and music are, imo, the two best ways to get to know a culture. Food and music speak volumes about the culture, its history and its traditions.

I have literally asked people the same question to people at different moments and received two different answers not based on anything but how they were feeling at that particular moment. That colonialism was motivated by a lack of respect for other cultures is a strange take. Most did it for money and didn't care about other cultures other than telling people back home that the heathens were brought under whatever religious fold they were about. Some did it for prestige and flooded money into their colonial handlings to replicate the standards in the homeland. Culture was not a driving factor apart from religion.

The debate of "reverse-racism" and "anti-white" sentiments stay in the news and politics of America pretty consistently. Obviously, right wing news sites like Fox, Washington Times, and TheBlaze are basically running articles about this 24/7. Even outside that group of people, it's on everyone's lips alot. Parents are screaming and threatening elementary and high school boards about "anti-white" sentiments in school. (Completely unfounded) Literally anytime the word racism is used or a person of color is discriminated against in the news, "reverse-racism" is automatically brought up like some kind of auto immune reaction as if we simply can't give space to minorities. Prejudices can happen to anyone for whatever reason. Yes, someone can be prejudice to a white person. Some say it's racism, some say "reverse" racism, and some just say prejudice. Whatever way, sure, white people CAN experience prejudice for being white. However, it actually is not as common as other types of prejudice, and it does not have the same impact and implications. I'm a white gay man. I understand my whiteness, I understand my queerness, and I understand my manhood. Whiteness in almost any country, especially America, is not systemically oppressed and never has been. There have never been laws nor legislation nor societal norms made specifically to target whiteness negatively. I have never had a law made to specifically target nor destroy nor criminalize my identity as a white man. Has a random person called me "toilet boil skin" or "violent man pig"? Yeah, like once. My gayness though? I just got the right to be married to my husband in 2015. That right is almost certainly going up for revote and may be revoked. My gayness was criminalized by the law. My identity was legally and scientifically considered a mental disease. I say all this reach my final point. Prejudice against white people does exist. No hate to any skin tone should be honored or allowed. However, it is disingenuous to equate white prejudice to the systemic racism against people of color, or the systemic attacks made against queer people even today. The American government is not criminalizing whiteness ,and it's not going to. Systemic racism by far is the more crucial problem that needs to be addressed. Too often, news sites and content creators use "reverse-racism" and "anti-white" as catch words, and quickly equate them to horrible racism of minorities. The woman being attacked in the video, even acknowledges all this in her response. I'm tired of people thinking anti-white sentiments are some dangerous systemic attack on them. It isn't. It isn't justified, but it is not the level it is inflated to. Let's not use this to detract from systemic oppression. Also, even as a white person, you ARE systemically oppressed most likely, by your CLASS. The rich make their money on the broken backs of the working class and below. They laugh in our faces as we squabble over "rever-racism" while they exploit us and the earth for personal material gain. For ex, I'm a dark Italian with brown skin (I'm also mixed with Caribbean) and i have friends who are Italians and super white. Italians are pretty complex.
