I just don’t understand why anyone actually cares about what Lebron does on the lakers at this point if he is past his prime and no longer even the clear best/ most important player on his own team. Like who tf cares if old 33 year old Shaq was able to win one more ring on DWades team? That chip did very little for Shaqs legacy. Especially in retrospect to what Kobe accomplished without him. And speaking of Kobe. Everyone always shits on him for missing the playoffs in a stacked western conference in 05. But nobody ever brings up the fact that he went 25-82 his last 3 years. And that’s because Kobe was officially out of his prime and washed post 2013 So if we don’t care when an all time great player loses while being out of their prime anywhere near as much as we do when they are in their prime. Then why should we care the same about how much a player wins past his prime as we do when in it?? The bulk of a players GOAT case is primarily in their prime as the best player on their team. The Bulls didn’t start winning until Pippen entered his prime and he was a major part of 6 championship winning teams. Yet absolutely nobody even has him in their top 30 all time. And it’s because he definitely wasn’t the best player on his own team which had prime MJ on it. I mean obviously he gets more credit than someone like Robert Horry. But if there is a hierarchical amount of credit being distributed from a clutch bench player to the 2nd best player then why not do something similar for being the 1st vs 2nd best player on championship teams. Even though most of Kareems rings were literally won as the 2nd or 3rd best player on his own team in the 80s because he was out of his prime by then and had Magic and Worthy he still gets put top 5 all time by many thanks to the fact that he was still able to win 5 MVPs and a championship while he was in his prime in the 70s Kareems argument for goat isn’t that he has the best resume with the best stats. Bill Russell has the best resume. And Wilt Chamberlain has the best stats. And Kareem’s prime was during a 70s era that was arguably even weaker than Russell’s and Wilts 60s. Kareem’s true argument for GOAT is that he had even less help to win rings in his prime than either Russell and Wilt had in theirs. Both Peak and Longevity should only matter after factoring in the maximization of a players prime. Like it’s ok to not have a very high peak if you have a long enough prime where you can accomplish more than another player but at the same time it’s not ok even if you have one of the highest peak if your prime was too short to accomplish anything as the teams best most valuable player. Anything achieved outside of a players prime should be automatically weighed less than anything achieved while in their prime when it comes to the GOAT convo. Lebrons team could win the championship or tank for the number 1 pick next year and it wouldn’t really matter to his goat case all too much. Because let’s face it at this point if the Lakers are gonna win another championship it’s gonna be off the back of an MVP caliber AD season not a Lebron one. 4 rings in his prime should be good enough right?
