You guys are hilarious. The “little swords” 😂 are pop rivets. Kitchen sealant won’t keep that frame in place as it’s sealant not adhesive. The no nails would’ve been much better, then use the sealant to seal the edges. And the drill bit is for brick/stone so no good for wood. Throw them away only need wood and metal drill bits on da boat! 😂❤

Drills go in two directions , there is a “key” that is usually attached to the cord that you can change direction, drill a hole into the wood or back the drill out of the hole by changing direction. Annddd use the right drill bit for the surface you’re drilling ie metal or wood as Neil said, and sealant isn’t glue for sure.
@1233jackb
@1233jackb 6 месяцев назад
@@jillipepper5353 there won't be a key on a cordless drill like that, the chuck is just a twist type to change between the various drill bits or screwdriver bits, and the forward and reverse gears are located just above the trigger. Most cordless drills also have 2 speed settings usually a big switch ontop of the machine, speed 1 for screws, and speed 2 for drilling holes etc. - just so y'all know 😊

That was 40 minutes of pure joy and laughter. Amy I know you think the vlog ended on a downer but just look at how far you've both come - you've literally done electrical and plumbing and even managed to sort out the water issue (even if it was a temporary fix). When I do get a boat I'm going to hire you both to sort it all out for me 😊

The drilling debacle made me laugh. Like watching Laurel and Hardy. My advice? Local hardware store and a cheap set of all-purpose drills. Toss everything else. Your cordless drill seems fine, just be aware of the direction you’re going in. While you’re at it, find out the difference between glue and sealant. It’ll save you a lot of grief later on. Love the channel and stay above water!

Bless your hearts. I can so relate to this and how long fixing anything on a narrow boat takes. The sense of excitement when the gulper spurts out the side is something normal people ( by this I mean non narrowboaters 😂) just wouldn’t understand. And then the accumulator. This is something I have ignored hoping it will just do its thing. It scares me so I think you did amazingly. Love you guys x

One possible option for sealing the wood-burning stove chimney joints is "exhaust assembly paste", which you can get in most DIY or car parts places. As the name implies, it is designed for sealing up gaps in engine exhaust pipes where one piece has to connect to another, such as where the silencer or catalytic converter joins on. It's got the consistency of soft putty as it comes out of the tube, but after a few hours it sets hard as rock - and the setting time is reduced if you heat it up, so you don't have to wait for it to set before you expose it to heat. Depending on the brand, it is rated for 1000 degrees C, sometimes more, so it should easily tolerate the temperatures a wood burning stove chimney gets to.

So sorry to watch you having so much trouble with the accumulator tank, right at the end of the day. What a bummer after you had such a productive day! I expect you have now found this out as it was a few weeks ago when you filmed it, but.... I cringed when Amy used the hot knife to cut the Hep2O water pipe. The problem was, you see, it left a ridge of melted plastic around the end. You need a clean end for these fittings to work, the pipe has to push into an O-ring inside the fitting and the ridges prevented that. Nice save though before bedtime, well done.

Little swords are rivets used to join things like sheet metal etc with a rivet gun thingy. Drill bits didn't work as you were using a masonry bit (one with pokey out bits on end.) And a metal bit has a spikey bit on end, should have still worked the metal one but guess is just you. You want the gold coloured ones normally work. You need something like Sikaflex for your windows etc as with expansion and contraction over summer and winter the sealant will last about 6 months to a year. Everyone's terrible at DIY to begin with but you learn from your mistakes and improve. You's certainly make plenty of them so yo will be DIY experts in no time 🙂

Firstly, very well done on getting the Whale gulper plumbed in so well in such a tight space. It is never easy in tight confines - you feel like you can only get one hand in, but need three plus one more to hold a light, one more with a cloth and one more to pass tools. A lack of bones or arms with extra elbows would help. Perhaps a trained octopus is the answer. Secondly, I would like to suggest that for future projects always start with the one that if something goes wrong it would leave issues that can't be simply left for another day. The plumbing needed to be done in the morning so that you would have had time to go get new fittings from a shop or someone to help if it goes wrong. Sounds defeatist maybe, but it isn't really. Plans need to cover worst case scenario while hoping for the best and needing to pop out and get a couple of extra new fittings is common with plumbing jobs. Having the wrong parts over a number of projects over the years means I now have more than a drawer full of plumbing bits, so I actually manage to do some repairs without needing a trip to the shop first. I think you are using PEX from the look of it. I have never used PEX, it is not a thing here yet, but I see people online either love or hate it - the same goes for Shark. Here it is still glue mostly. I'm not sure which I would prefer. I'm familiar with glue, but you only get one chance each time - once glue is added, that's it - no second chance. It becomes a case of cutting it all out and starting again. Thirdly - those aluminium things on what look like nails that you asked us to identify - they are pop-rivets. Excellent for holding 2 bits of thin metal together, but they require a rivet gun to use them. A cheap tool, but perhaps don't buy one until such time as you need to use one, and even then you can often borrow one. They are manual, no batteries/power required, so they are easy to master. While looking at tools, the first drill bit you tried to use - the silver one with what looks like a flat bit let into the end of it - that is only for use in masonry, it is a masonry bit, so unless you need to drill into one of your ballast bricks it is not of any use on a boat really. The second one you used (black one) is a high speed steel bit - for use drilling into metals, but can be used to metals and plastics too. In fact pretty much anything other than masonry. Depending on the grade it might not be any good for stainless steel either - drill bits for stainless steel tend to be expensive because it is a harder metal. By the way, it could be a trick of the video, but it did look like you were trying to drill into that wood with the drill in reverse gear. I love your willingness to get stuck in and fix/improve stuff. It is a great attitude. From your comments I believe you are watching some online videos on the subject too. Always watch at least 3 different ones because some are terrible and should be taken offline, so with 3 or more you stand a good chance of at least catching one good one. Some DIY stores and and hardware stores have staff who are happy to explain the difference between various tools and why certain things are better than others for whatever you are planning to do. Sometimes some staff know nothing or can't be bothered to help, but if you don't ask you don't know. If you have spare time you can also study the various tools in a DIY store. Take a look at wood drill bits, metal drill bits and masonry drill bits. You will see they have different shaped ends, so then you will be instantly able to identify them. Always handy! Through all the trials and tribulations you managed to keep filming and maintain positive attitudes. For that you guys rock! Tim & Jalika, Malaysia

Wow. Look at what you achieved. Although the pump gave me anxiety too. When I’ve had to fix a couple of water issues here, I’ve filled my kettle so I can still make some cups of tea, a water bottle so I can clean my teeth and a bucket or two to flush the loo before I’ve turned the water off. And made sure my dogs water bowls were full. That way it didn’t matter too much that I had to wait until the next day for a plumber. But seriously... well done you two. Ps. I’m a Chippy’s ( Oz slang for Carpenter) daughter ... so the drilling and the sawing also made my heart race. But total kudos to you re your hot pipe cutting method ...totally would have done the same thing.

After noticing everyone leaving nearly identical comments.. here is mine. A few books I highly recommend anyone who owns a boat having on hand. Things will become a lot less difficult & hopefully show you if the job ahead is some you guys want to tackle, or call someone out to do it for you. Btw you guys need to use plumbers tape (teflon band etc) for any threads that involve water. There is more - but I think these books will show you the way better than I can explain here. Plus having knowledge on hand cuts down on anxiety :) Boatowner's Mechanical and Electrical Manual by Nigel Calder The Narrowboat Builder's Book by Graham Booth The 12 volt Bible for boats by Miner Brotherton Great video& here is to you guys figuring out how to "fix" the rest. But hey, without trying no one learns, so here is to that!! (One last one.. btw you can call the manufacturer and see if this pump is compatible with your boat) Okay okay last one: before starting any mechanical or electrical work& as you go along, make sure you take pics as you do. That way its easier to put things correctly back together & if things go sideways anyone you call has an immediate reference of what& how you did things. Plus remembering what wire goes where etc is sometimes a bit hard. But if you have pics, you now know exactly what goes/went where. Saving time& stress. A video isnt the best as its oft not taken as up close as any pics are.

Hey guys, you asked about that funny tiny aluminum thing that you have lots of. It is a pop rivet and requires a special tool to install them. The rivets come in various lengths and diameters. You can also get them in stainless as well as aluminum. Very useful item for DIYers. Your "hole drillers" (drilling holes for magnets) are actually concrete bits for drilling into masonry and concrete. If you do use them to drill a hole in masonry etc. it is necessary to spray them with water to keep the drill cool. Mark Alberta, Canada

We have all been there, just doing that one extra diy task is a bit like deciding to just go round the next bend in case the mooring is better - most of the time we live to regret it :) thanks for such fun and engaging videos.

You were using the drill in reverse too. Put a thicker layer of sealant on the temporary flue fix

The little hole drillers are masonary drill bits for stone not wood, normal drills do not have the the bits on the end.

Guys get yourself some sikoflex because that IS a sealer and adhesive and it has the added bonus of being waterproof !. Those sword things are Pop rivets and they are the correct size and probably the ones that were used for securing your outside window frames into the Sides of your Boat. Drill bits you definitely don’t need Masonry ones ? Why on earth you have them on a Boat is anyone’s guess ??.
