My DNA shows my ancestors came across the land bridge o Alaska. My family lacks the gene to convert carotenoids to Vit A . However fish, whale blubber, wild game all have Vit A. When I when vegetarian for 10 years, I developed Drusen deposits that are pre macular degeneration. Since the 5 years I returned to being an omnivore, I have no macular degeneration progression. So yes we may need either real retinoids acid or eating healthy animal fats. Sandra P. MD
@@Dr_DougLucas .... What nutrients or essential oils or other stimulates and supports Cardiac Muscle regrowth? Specifically in low ejection fraction individuals? Down to almost 25%...
I had my DNA tested about 5 years ago and it clearly stated, in the evaluation and advice, that I needed Vitamin A from animal sources as there was a problem converting beta carotene to retinol.
It seems that only 5 to 10% max of beta-carotene can be converted to Vitamin A. And you would have eat a higher volume of those foods too plus high amounts of anti nutrients.
“How do you do this? …. It’s impossible!” Love your knowledge and sense of humor!! Such clear information and well thought out discussion! I’m now a subscriber!
Thank you for all the research you do on these tough scary reports that continue to come out with “ one size fits all!” It makes a lot of sense after you explain things the way you do.
I am on long term low dose prednisone for PMR, so I’m trying to get ahead of osteoporosis. One thing I discovered was that after 3 years I started having serious wound healing issues. As in simple open wounds were taking months to heal. I discovered that using retinol vitamin A applied to the wounds and taking 10,000 iu 2x a week finally had my wounds healing and I’ve not had healing issues since. Now I’m concerned about how to keep my wounds healing normally without increasing chance of hip fractures. I also have serious nutrient absorbing issues, which may contribute. I love these videos that give us the info to make the right decisions fir our health.
So do you have to get your levels tested regularly to make sure you're not building up too much? I have also had slow wound healing and I've started cod lover oil as I'm a bit worried to take vitmin a itself other.than what small bit is in cod liver oil.
thank you. Obviously those if us who are using Medicare as Insurance are not receiving proper information. I have only seen my Endocrinologist 2 twice in 2 years. Everything is based on DEXA scans. They just prescribe and no real follow up. I just received my 1st RECLAST infusion. I believe it will be my LAST. I have been using all the "supplements" that you have suggested. My next goal is to ramp up my muscle mass.
I’m with you. Never had such side effects EVEN WITH CARBOPLATIN! Keep moving and carefully take your supplements. This guy does a good job. Additionally, try a vibration plate. Given where I live I can use it in my house and avoid increasing fall incidents. Good luck
Vitamin A has always been a problem if you take it as a supplement, whether beta carotene or retinol. Best to always get nutrients in their most natural form.
Vegan bias is a huge thing.. and I was a follower for over 15 years. Now I’m paying the price. I’m back on animal protein and other protein big time..and very low carb… no added sugar or alcohol. When the study on hip fractures was released the information was diluted and the smoke and mirrors… I should have dug deep but… Well now I’m thinner, more muscle from the weights and protein(I can get up and down off the floor easily which I could not do AT ALL a year ago). I want to know if you recommend a certain protein powder? I like it for an easy and light breakfast.. after morning exercise 🎉 ( and cold in this brutal heat)-and I try to get at least 30 gr of protein at each meal. Any help greatly appreciated. Do you recommend whey or plant protein powder.. or any at all? (Video idea?🤷♀️😏) Thanks Dr Lucas!
Prime Protein by Equip. It has 20g of animal protein in each scoop. I use it in my yogurt and even in my eggs! It’s not cheap but it tastes great and it’s all clean ingredients. Google it and you’ll find places to buy it. It’s a good one! 💜🦴💜
We do recommend protein powders to patients when needed. I don’t like plant based proteins but if required pea is best. Whey is great when tolerated but testing may be required. My favorite is by Equipe and is a beef protein isolate. Tastes great.
My son rejected peas in his food from the time that he could articulate his distaste and smell of peas while cooking. ( daughter and I love peas, and had to hide, cook them when he was not around). I kept them out of his food. He went to college and was turned to pea proteins (no taste or smell of peas). Eight years later he was diagnosed with allergy to peas! I believe his body knew all along that he should have stayed away from peas❗
This is not on the topic of Vitamin A, but I am wondering if you have heard of, or have an opinion about using Bone Morphogenic Proteins for bone health. I have samples of a specific product from a specific manufacturer that I am considering trying. The patented substance is described as ""Partially hydrolyzed collagen and its associated proteins including Bone Morphogenetic Proteins." Thank you for the wonderful education on osteoporosis!
Hello, BMPs do build bone but the specifics of the product, where and how they are applied makes a big difference. BMPs can also be dangerous so I can't comment on a specific product without knowing what it is.
i have two things that seperatedly caused me bad falls...1)misjudging heights due to bifocal glasses and 2) not double tying my tennis shoes and tripping backwards during my "backwards" walking routine...
I love-love-love your video's, but please eliminate the music in the background. It is very distracting and takes away from your important content. thanks
4:37 the 95% confidence interval includes the 1.0 RR line most of the time. What does this graph tells you then? Almost nothing. Could mean for you that a low or high level of retinol does nothing for YOUR risk. If it's not data from an interventional study, it doesn't tell you anything about your personal risk anyway.
Should I stop eating sweet potatoes, carrots, parsnips and all Vitamin A vegetables and fruits? I have a very slight chance of fracture but don’t plan on falling. I work full time in finance and before I got covid in 2020/21, I earned an MBA with double finance and analytics concentrations and was running/walking 5 miles a day with weights. I am over 65 with no other health issues. I think continuing my healthy lifestyle will continue as it has thus far. Studies are usually geared to what the people doing the studies want the results to be. I have never eaten much and that can lead to bone loss too.
On point evaluation of inadequate data. One might as well say stepping outside is associated with increased risk of death due to solar radiation, risk of accidents or violence, falls, etc. The list of confounding data is immense here and conclusions that were drawn are far from actionable proof.

Yes, I would like to know the answer to that too. I was diagnosed with osteoporosis and I have been using Retin-A on my face for many years. Could that be related?
No. There is little if any systemic absorption from a topical of that strength. Important question is “is the acne from vitamin A deficiency in the first place?”
@@Dr_DougLucas no not in my case. I had acne when I was young in my teens. I’m currently taking Retin-A for a smoother complexion, actually for wrinkles.
Thank you for answering my Tretinoin question. I really enjoy your content! I don’t use it for acne though. I use it for fine lines & wrinkles. At 73, I need all the help I can get, but happy it’s not needed for acne! lol
12:05 I think one need to say that Retinoic acid and 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 are not the Vitamin A you get from animal food or from your usual D3 pills. These are already metabolites of what you eat. If they inject mice with those, that may have completely different results from eating real food.
@@Dr_DougLucasi.e. if you want your study to go one way, you order the mice with a genetic variation that will indirectly or even directly affect the mechanism being tested ... Most studies do not identify what kind were used, 93 to 97 % of study results are incapable of being replicated/reproduced at all.... So even if mice were ordered, and a study was done (almost 50% of studies are outright faked/fraud) the disclosure or mice shipped were not what was appropriate, but the opposite of it... Collusion via captured labs and captured lab suppliers is the NORM in a captured field
Hi Doctor. I have high cholesterol and eat a whole egg and two egg whites. Is the retinol in eggs in the yolk, the white or both? Thank you for your answer.
I see a lot of supplements have K2 and K1. I can t take K1 with low dosage aspirin I was told. I’ve was told to take calcium citrate for yrs without k2. Now I’m told if you didn’t take K2 with calcium you get calcified arteries , which I now have.
Hello, This is such a confusing topic and most physicians don't understand the basic science behind it. There is no evidence that increased K1 through diet or supplementation will negatively impact clotting unless someone is taking coumadin/warfarin. If our patients are taking calcium they are taking Vit D and K2 to help with absorption and utilization.
This is exactly why I say don’t take any supplements or any of these protein powders cause it’s all BS. They’ll change their mind and a few years!!!!! food, real food end of story
Hi Dr Doug, thanks for the useful content. What about retinoid and retinol used for skin care eg tretinoin creams and adapalene? Would these be absorbed into the body to sufficiently affect bone density?

Hi my name is Annemarie I have spinal stenosis, my muscles contract, always holding my muscles tight, my neck muscles contracting, them ! Compression pain is also terrible 😢, thank you???
I mentioned this on another video, but it might be good to try putting your camera on manual focus, so it's locked on your face and doesn't keep searching.
It depends on numerous factors. It is very difficult to actually calculate. That’s why I prefer to consider retinol as the most beneficial source of vitamin D through diet and supplementation. However, if you consider the variable absorption and conversion of beta carotene, to retinal equivalence, even at 3000 or 4000 µg you would still be getting Less than the RDI of retinol at the lower end of the equation. Again, this is a complex calculation that in our practice requires the use of a well trained dietitian.

You cannot just test one vitamin and leave all the other Vitamins and minerals out. They work together. School medicine does not know much about nutrition, vitamins and minerals, if they would they would know that the body can only stay healthy when they are properly supplied with all vitamins and minerals etc.
True and I'm sure this is part of the bigger picture here. This is why epidemiology does not serve this type of evidence. However, some evidence on specific vitamins can be obtained by measuring and trying interventions with them. Nutrition literature and research is extremely challenging.
I have many things that matter but I have two artificial hips, so I’m not worried about my hips but I am worried about the rest of me. I left a message on another video. I do have osteoporosis I have LEMS and I have RA. I’m 76 I’m trying to figure out what to do I may end up on probably I don’t know but I have to check my levels again so we will see. But I think you for your information because you have a lot of good stuff. Thank you.
My eye doctor has suggested a supplement that contains significant levels of vitamin A to combat dry eyes. In combo with my multivitamin it results in about 1650 mcg daily. Is that amount a potential problem!!??

How much beef liver should you eat? One way to look at this: If you eat half a cow in total per year, maybe you can/should eat also about half a cow liver per year. If half a cow liver is at least 2,5kg, then you can eat 50g of beef liver per week. Which would be 7000-9000 IE per week and 1000 IE per day. Sounds reasonable.
Hahaha....growing up we had beef liver, heart , kidney and brain once a week.😂 ( now I have to worry about other people's olfactory reactions so I take it as desiccated in gel caps 😢
I have read in a few places recently that since fat soluble vitamins compete for absorption, vitamin D and K should be taken separately. Any thoughts on that? THANK YOU :-))))
I have heard that you should take vitamin D3 and vitamin K2 together. Vitamin K2 is not the same as just taking vitamin K. And it is supposed to help calcium get absorbed into your bones when you take the vitamin D3 and K2 together. Melaleuca has a supplement with vitamin D3 and K2 together. 22:50
Hello, Yes, the do compete to some extent BUT consider how they are delivered in nature. Together. This can't be a mistake. Same with magnesium and calcium. Generally delivered together. That's how I recommend they be consumed.

If you had a Dexa after a broken femur and anterior hip replacement three weeks out after heavy blood loss lowered hermaticrit also BP. Could that affect your Dexa?
Heres the thing i want to know about all these studies. Did all the people taking vitamin a go skiiing cos they felt amazing. As far as i know beta carotine is banned in europe now ..in the 80s it was a big scandle because people took it for tanjing in high doses (to tirn orange) and now if its not banned ive never seen it and most people know beta carotine is bad for you from that scandle.
Probably doesn’t! Retinol in the body is protective of bone health up to an extreme. You’re not likely getting much systemic absorption with a cream so I don’t think there is much impact on bone.
Hi Dr Doug I have recently found your videos helpful and wonder could you tell the starting point for treatment for a osteoporosis diagnosis with a TBS 1.189 at 69 yrs after hip fracture but still with good general physical health. My doctor insists I go straight on drugs. I have longevity in my family. Thank you

Hello, It can. Eating a protein forward, whole foods, plant based approach is difficult. We can help someone construct an ideal diet within these parameters if needed. Nutrition is just one of 4 pillars and lifestyle is just one of 5 layers so we don't exclude anyone based on nutrition preferences.
Why? Please explain why you must act against your human nature and health, especially your children's and their children's, because they will be mostly impacted by your vegetarian lifestyle decisions. Yes,you probably feel "fine " but your children, grand children, and generations to come will certainly suffer the consequences. ( i.e grandchild of vegeterian grandmother, and mother was born without the ability for his essophugus, and ather cartilage as hr grew up. Every other year he had to have surgery procedures to correct that. Yes, you will pass, and never know the consequences....well)
Checkout our masterclass or healthspan nation if you have not. We are able answer more specific questions like this through those platforms. Links for both of those are in the video description :)
Sorry to hear that. The punchline is vitamin A is touted as a Vitamin that will cause hip fractures. The truth is we likely are deficient in it and we probably need more.
