This session was recorded on 22 April 2024 on the earliest version of the Ashlands on the Valheim Public Test Branch.
This series includes Glitchy and my genuine first reactions to entering the Ashlands without much knowledge at all! We were able to coordinate and play on the FIRST day of the Public Test Branch’s release so take that with its own grain of salt. It is not part of any other playthrough and is a standalone on a new world I created to help us quickly get ready and play with some Ashlands stuff, since we didn’t have a good playthrough ready to join up and adventure in together! This is a series that Glitchy and I both recorded and made separate videos for our respective channels. Watch one or both videos if you want to see Glitchy’s perspective.

not sure why Glitchy isn't using the bubble as a mage. Constant bubble is kinda a cardinal rule when playing mage, no?

It deffinently is, im going full mage now, my hotbar is all magic staffs😂 got my embra outfit, eitr food, axe for wood, pickaxe for mining and hammer for building. Im having a great time in the ashland as full magic😁

Those asksvin boops into lava suck. I've died a few too many times to those as well. Some of the balace patches have helped, but Ashlands is still tough. Sometimes I feel like a complete newb again. I swear I used to be good at this game.

That perfectly captures how I've been feeling. There are many times where I feel pretty damn good at the game and very knowledgeable and effective at combat. Of course certain situations get out of hand, but I can usually handle most situations. And then came the ashlands. While it is awesome to finally have a biome that I'm not familiar with, it definitely humbled me. Especially in the server that I play in, which is on very hard difficulty

When you have high blood magic skill like 50+, the skeletons will actually start putting in work. Sucks that you have to grind it that high for them to be more than fodder but oh well, at least protection staff will get a huge buff with a higher level too.

Yea spent days farming flametal ... you can find it in the fortress sometimes, too .(Sorry if that's a spoiler) .I have really been enjoying the content of late .

How to trap asksvin: dig a giant hole. Abyssal harpoon two asksvin. Drag them into hole and throw food at them. BAM

@@WafflesGamesProbably they got buffed in todays Patch... you can ride them in lava without taking fire damage plus feather cloak and Asksvin cloak got Frost resistances as addition Ask armor got a pretty good set bonus

Glitchy is right, it is calmer at night, or at least it is no worse at night. Can't use the we went into Ashlands without spoilers either if you are an experienced Valheimer; it has already taught you many of the devs ways if one pays even a little attention to them. We didn't even go after any flametal until we were about a month in or more; anything that obvious is obviously a red herring, it's what the devs do. We also were building like crazy with the new materials sans flametal. We got just enough to upgrade the bench and cauldron and make the lava lamps and a couple other things from the dvergr crates in their bases once they ran out and were killed off.

I am glad that the mobs seem to be able to dmg each other, even if they don't necessarily aggro on each other.

There’s only one weapon that can handle these mobs … the red ruby shot gun “dundr” but you’ll need to assault a fortress for it lol

I've tried it and so far I'm underwhelmed. But maybe I need to level it up, and my magic skills.

I'm not sure what "these mobs" refers to, but certainly, a lightning sword or set of berserker axes handles things just fine. I carry both. Axes are fun for normal mobs, anything starred or big, sword and board. I've got decent sword skills, but terrible axe skills and it doesn't even matter.

I'm not a big fan of it. It does great damage but you basically have to be in melee range for it be effective, because of that, it conflicts with the ranged nature of spellcasters. Personally I would rather to just use a melee weapon at that distance. The other downside is the recharge, your eitr doesn't recover while recharging it, which enables it to just devour your eitr bar. The good thing is that it destroys morgens.

Dundr is good for certain mobs like a Morgen for example, it shreds them. But not quite as good for other mobs.

they really need to nerf the Askvin's knockback damage, its one of the strongest, if not the strongest knockback from a Valheim mob I've ever seen

I was waiting for that lava death to happen. You keep letting askvin get on the other side of you from lava, it was bound to happen. Always be aware of where the lava is and if you are in 'bumping postion' for an askvin. Always better to have the askvin between you and the lava. Same goes for anything with pushback. Those tank puppies are fun, huh? lol

Really, all Fenris? I hear a large fan blade humming in the distance! I went with the carapace helmet, fenris chest and carapace greaves and linen cape going into the Ashlands and was very successful with that combo; turns out I had almost the equivalent of the Ashlands ranger armor. In fact I couldn't decide between the two for quite a while. I would have loved to still wear the carapace helmet but it takes all three ask armor pieces for the buff unlike the Fenris.

I think you should try making a bit less noise. Avoid exploding Lava Blobs if you can, they draw a lot of attention. Sneak and avoid bigger mobs, they seem to lose interest relatively quickly. Or not, since running will just get you to a next mob and possibly add to the existing one. Judging by what I see, I don't think I can survive sieges. I managed to survive surprisingly well with just Fenris Armor and Feather Cape, but it was not that enjoyable. Just constant fleeing and almost no rest (that was before the patch). But sieging... that's a whole different situation. No matter what armor. Maybe if I can destroy the spawners from afar, but if there are Warlocks outside, not just inside.... To be honest, I'm not looking forward to that, as a solo player.

Yeah the aggro tweaks they made should help substantially but it'll still be a lot all the time. Especially during sieges. I can't wait to do another proper siege with glitchy. It's ROUGH on my very hard server

use basalt bomb and throw on lava it will apear lava rock than u can walk pass. can crafting workbench

Am I the only one e who thought to spawn block the area? I went into ashlands blind and the initial landing day was rough. But as soon as I had a beach portal down the first thing I did was scatter campfires around the area to stop spawns. I've always done this around my bases and in places like the Mistlands so I can mine without being disturbed. Each excursion into the ashlands I left a trail of campfires and largely stopped the spawns. Yes, the Ashland spawns were crazy . . But since we have a simple solution to stop spawns, it wasn't a big deal! Looking at videos like these, I see everyone complaining about spawn rates but doing nothing about it?

Just out of curiosity - how many "unpatched" episodes will follow estimately? This mob spawning is hilarious and makes me really fear of the ashlands... but I only enjoy your episodes as it really feels like "watching friends" and not someone completely strange doing/trying powergaming. Like the way you connect to the game, but like to see more of the "current" situation. Looking foewartd to many more brave ashlanders :)

Not to dissimilar to my first experience with the exception that I got the molten cores early by emergency running into a putrid hole to escape and found them. Great episode and gameplay. The struggle was real before the patch.

Stealth is definitely not my thing but I've tried a bit. And in the Ashlands I feel it'd be especially hard.

@@yagoa Oh wow! I could definitely use some good stealth training! It's never been my play style in any game, as I'm sure you can tell, but it can be very handy.

@@WafflesGamesProbably well I put some workbenches down behind me(to avoid being surrounded) and secondary attack from behind. build some stairs up to the fortress, snipe the spawners and then use them as bases with workbenches in the corners. Spawn busting is the secret imo and stamina food is your friend so you can finish enemies off.

Yes, you can . Use the new steps to climb up the outside and jump inside .. then dig under the centre to put portal and shield generator covers the fortress ready to claim as an indestructible ashlands base 😊 good luck

You can, but they can break through them now, especially the lava blobs, their detonation destroys terrain. They do end up mining stone for you though....so yay?

I spent 4 hours turning a fortress into a base for the ashlands thats near indestructible by using steps to climb inside without breaking the wall then dig under the center tower place . 3 portals on the inside of the tower in the middle 1 home and 2 for exploring .. and a large portal outside for moving metal home . Works great a base

The only difference I've seen in your play is there are more one star asksvin in the PTR, and you guys didn't have lag to even speak of, we have LA...aaa...GGGG...G! The most interesting thing has been figuring out how to beat stuff when the entire biome is almost the equivalent of a fuling village. Sounds like the upcoming PTB release will be the actual significant mob nerfing. The balls to the walls method may work better then!
