Your community post of “Remember when people played battle traps” made me cry

Waboku alongside Negate Attack and Mirror Force, were basically my defensive staples in my old decks.

Waboku is a type of card I always liked - A simple old card with a simple, but very versatile effect, that from time to time is splashable in decks even years after its release. Shame that it eventually fell into the battle trap hell of modern yugioh. I doubt it will see much play ever again, given that it can't be activated from the hand, and if it's used as a regular trap, it doesn't read "you win the game".

The follow up video to this one should be all about how Forbidden Lance expanded on Waboku's significance by giving more defensive decks a way to be more aggressive while contributing to their defense! Think letting 4-Axis Fire Fist run over stuff with Bear easier, or Dino Rabbit not needing to burn Lagia's effect on a BTH or TT as soon as it hit the field.

I used to love Waboku, probably because as a dumb poor kid it was widely available and was also useful for that good ol' playground meta

Heh, didn’t expect my deck to be featured here lol. Fun fact: Waboku has never been a holo since Kevin Tewart hated that experienced players would bully young/inexperienced players with it.

I'm not surprised. Battle traps were big back in the DM era, and not only was Waboku's protection second to none for its time, but it could be chained to backrow removal, causing your opponent to waste their precious MST or Nobleman or whatever. And it being a starter deck card probably made it the budget version of more potent cards as time went on. As you mention, the card economy was its real downside.

I can't tell you how many times I've had to argue with players with Waboku and understanding its ruling! Because of its wording, and the NUMEROUS reprints, many thought the card would make your monsters atk 0, or thought the monster would die after the battle with no damage. This caused me to not run the card outta sheer frustration of explaining the card techs. Hell, it didn't help my deck ran 3 different retypes of the very card!!!

Back then, a waboku/secutor play easily wins you games, even if your opponent had a stardust on their field. ❤️

Could we get a video on yugioh meta deck prices. Id argue it only got out of hand in the modern era. Cimos history and darklaws retrospective made me realize that me and my friends were always playing competitive decks despite being on 10$ highschool budgets and thinking we were playin bad decks cause the older brother that took us to locals was of coarse playin teladad.

Waboku in my region didn't see the play it deserved until problem-solving card text became a thing as so many couldn't figure out how the effect worked. After it was it saw more play. Ironically I tended to run it in my blue-eyes and synchron decks to support protection of smaller monsters until I could transition them for the big guns, back when the game was much, MUCH slower than it is now and we were rotating around whether archetype bosses were immune to targeted effects (magic Cylinder) or not

I think wabaku is actually pretty broken still to this day, think about it u can use it during either players turn and makes ur monters immortal, hard to counter and u otk proof etc, great in deck where ur either going to otk or get otked

Ah back in the old days when the battle phase was relevant, missed those days. I believe the last time it was relevant was HAT format where u had to think twice attacking a set monster in fear of being fire and ice hand, geargia armor or worm yagan. Also bujin yamato was annoying lol.
