When they thought you were pulling over one on them, so they grabbed a calculator only to find out you're an honest guy...... that was extremely awkward.
I don't math, my dyslexia manifests mostly with numbers, so I'm a bit gobsmacked that they're having a sale but don't have a calculator with their stuff. Or maybe that's just my Dad coming out in me. LOL Wed do flea markets with him back in the early 80s.
I don't get it, why is it awkward? Isn't it natural to do it with a calculator, instead of trusting some quick maths from a stranger? And this guy seems to take it as some personal insult for some reason.. I really don't appreciate the demonization of these regular people here in the comments. It's like everyone on video is painted as a scammer out to get someone, when the sellers are just doing the same negotiation as the buyer, trying to get the best deal. Anyone who doesn't treat these pickers with silk gloves immediately gets torn down. Such a toxic community. If the people in these videos were made aware of how they are portrayed and treated on this channel, this guy would probably be unwelcome in most local garage sales. It's downright cowardly what he and his community are doing here.
If more people were like you and realised that in life there will be times when somebody makes a mistake or makes a wrong judgment but if you stay patient and allow them time to see that they are incorrect then all will be fine eventually. Unfortunately too many people are way too quick to defend themselves with anger and rage which only escalates the situation and results in a verbal or physical fight. You're clearly a decent person and anybody who deals with you will see that, if not right away then soon enough. I live in London, England and enjoy your videos very much btw. It is so nice and refreshing to see that there are parts of the world where friendly and polite people appear to be the norm. Unfortunately that's not so much the case where I live.
Just what I teach my sales team John! Saying nothing is more powerful than saying anything. Keeping quiet inevitably makes the other party talk first, because human nature dictates that we tend to dislike awkward silences. That way you know what their thoughts on the deal are first and then it puts you in control.
They already agreed to $200. Then they wanted to get a calculator involved. You should have insisted on getting your own calculator involved. Then you and the sellers could get into a calculator war.
Ya know, I’m afraid our older population are a little skeptical of folks simply because so many try to take advantage of them. Plus, John was moving a little fast with his adding, and I know as I’ve aged, following that gets harder and harder. I’m sure the gentleman was just embarrassed by his wife being a little fussy. John, you handled that perfectly and respectfully.
I think you are right. I initially had a pretty negative response but after reading this it reminded me how sometimes I'd have to slow down a bit when interacting with elderly people. Although...i've had a few interactions where younger people who can't math and try to correct me. LOL Thanks for reminder to be more patient sometimes!
@@kookflips4566 I'd be the older chick who can't math to save her beans. LOL One thing I've learned over the years is that there really is no situation where patience is the wrong move. Nothing is so important that you can't be polite and give folks the benefit of the doubt. Those folks were just being cautious because, like you said, so many folks today try and take advantage of our seniors. Just watching other picking videos shows you that. Our dear Cincinnati Picker is a wonderful example of how you SHOULD be instead of being greedy and grubbing. CP, you do Cincy proud! Happy to be in the 513 with you!
I collect cigarette lighters and a few years ago at a yard sale I asked got any lighters? The said no but.... I got a cigarette machine. Now I immediately thought of the huge machines we all remember but he brings me into his basement and go all the way in back and he goes there it is and it's a wall mount machine a little smaller than what your soap machine is and it's all chrome and it's 15 cents a pack 2 for a quarter he tells me it's from the 30s and it was in the subway in NYC I ask how much he says 25 I'm thinking wow 2500 that's too much my wife will kill me then I think wait a minute and I say "dollars" he goes yeah 25 dollar's what do you think I mean. Oh nothing I say I pay him carry it out and I can hear coins rattling around in it take it home open it up (locked no key) and find a mercury dime and a quarter both from 1930. It's cool and unfortunately it doesn't work I called around for parts and was told there aren't any they just don't make then and the guy told me a secret just because it's a cigarette machine (or a soap machine) doesn't mean you can't use it as a candy machine. They are the same machines and the machine doesn't know what's in it. And yes I sold the dime and quarter for more than I paid for it
I love comparing what all you've found to what all I've found after a long Saturday of hustling. It's like I get to relive my morning through another set of yard sales.
Omg! He already agreed to $200 then when you give him the money, it’s like he was struck with seller’s remorse. Gave you back the money & wanted to add things up again & then accepted the money. It amazes me the way you can add things up on the top of your head pretty fast. I’d be using my fingers or calculator.
I don’t hold it against them for wanting to get a calculator and making sure that you were adding correctly. I know lots of people who just can’t do math in their head.
I’m pretty new to the channel. I watch your videos everyday now, the price negotiation is what I think that I’m interested the most. I love estate sales and garage sales. I wish I had your job! Keep up the good work CP!
Iv just been tested positive for covid and your videos are really helping me take my mind of everything and making me happy whilst I recover. I couldn't thank you enough!
Great finds! I have two of those Hamsters & just can't part with them. My great grandkids love them & when you have them both on, they repeat each other. Much fun!
I laughed wen she said I'm a hard neigoate, and I was thinking who else will buy it lols 🤣 especially wen u brought so much, they should be grateful ur a very humble and honest man
I just wanted to tell you that I find you highly entertaining and educational. I am just starting to buy and sell on ebay. So I find that yourself and other pickers are very helpful with practical information on what to look for and where to look. Thank you.
Good for you for counting all of that out. After I get through adding up several things I just stop at an appropriate point and ask to throw the rest of the stuff in for free.
I love your videos. Do you have a favourite item ever that you've found at a yard sale? Before the internet I bet it was a lot easier to come across something rare and exciting for very little money but nowadays people can check how much everything is worth in just a few clicks. Same with thrift stores or charity shops as we call them over here. I remember as a kid walking into musty and mouldy smelling thrift stores and finding amazing treasures hidden amongst piles of junk for almost no money at all. Treasures that were either financially worth tonnes or were super rare and sought after. I'm sure it still happens but probably not as often these days?!
Some Pez have a lot of value even if they have feet, but that's a pretty good rule of thumb if you know nothing about them. There are also some with thinner feet, which were made between the time of no feet and today's thicker feet. If you have one without feet you can look at the patent number to see if it's really vintage or not. If the patent starts with a number smaller than 4, you have one on the older side. I got my start selling on eBay when I decided to start selling off my Pez collection, so it's exciting for me to see a Pez even if it's not worth much!
That was so weird. Honestly, I might have said, "You know, if you're not comfortable with that price, that's OK. Thanks for letting me look," and then headed back to the car.
That vending machine is super cool find. And even watching that negotiation part was a bit cringy while they discussed lol.. but you stayed patient and cool about it all.
Hi John. I love your videos and have a question. How do you decide which box to put your items after you list them? For example A23 or B5 etc; or do you just go in sequential order until the box is full? I just started an Ebay store with my son and we are getting our storage area together. Any info would be appreciated.
Especially when it comes to people that resell. People ask about their cameras and the response is, ohh I just like recording myself going to garage sales. Be honest with these people. I’m recording to show my viewers how cheap I can get it to resell at a huge markup. Or they record to complain how pricey items are.
That was an awesome garage sale John.. Love all these vintage items especially the bowling game that is killer.. Also love that vintage laundry detergent vending machine that was a really cool find.. Well done sir.. Stay safe all..👍💕🔥⚾😷
Hey!! lol. I think I remember from your wifes vlogs that you all are outside of Cincinnati, but any recommendations of must-do family activities maybe that are less known? We are coming from FL for a few days. Anyone else who is local feel free to answer as i'm sure he's busy LOL
