There is a study by U of Washington on two very similar dairy farms in Whatcom County, side by side. Both had been farmed more or less the same way for decades, composted cow manure and hay or straw bedding for fertilizer, cultivation for weed control. Just after WW2, one farm family switched to modern methods, the use of herbacides, heavy use of chemical fertilizers etc. The other farm family continued on with what we now call " organic" farming practices. The study was done in 1986, so about 40 years after the one farm switched to chemical and herbacide usage. The difference in soil depth in 1986 was astounding. The organic farm had 12-16" of soil whereas the chemical farm had 5-8" . The quality differences in the soil were also very pronounced. The soil at the organic farm was full of the living organisms ( nematodes) which are needed for moisture retention and proper aeration. The chemical farm soil was more of a lifeless paste. Ive used chemicals on our farm in the past. The U of W study really made me rethink some of my practices. We have switched to composted manure for fertilizer and cut our herbacide use dramatically.

Tim back when I was farming, I plowed sod with a John Deere 720 Diesel and a 5 -14 semi mounted. You can’t beat a fourteen inch bottom in sod and the tractor pulled it, No problem it does bring back memories

Good looking soil Tim. We don't have that here in NC. Red clay. Papaw always said if you plow wet in the spring you will roll clods. That soil is a lot different than what I am used to. We always plowed in the fall. Rule of thumb is 1 drawbar HP per inch of plow. You are pulling 3-16" that equates to 48 drawbar HP. You probably have 58 to 60 HP at the drawbar plus the loaded rears you are good to go. Thanks so much for your video's. I really appreciate them.

I love how you both work together, never slowing down the other to start your cut. It reminded me of a guy mowing a Lawn, the other picking up the grass clippings. On the chain binders. My Humble opinion is, I thought Those gear driven ones were so much better than the original chain binder. Then you showed a power drill assist type, all I can say is WOW. That just snug up chains, that you can watch, and get to perfect tightness. Boy what will smart people think of next. The binding of Equipment on trailers ( I would have to pick up one piece, then drop off and pick up another) it is very hard tiring work doing it a couple times a day. For the company that a guy delivers, drops of equipment all day. What a time saver, being there done that. Thanks for showing these great inventions.

Brings back memories we live of 20 acre hobby farm, i would get it ready for spring using a John Deere M 40’s vintage and a 2 bottom plow it had the trip rope to raise and lower it and a old disc.

Love it! I support the organic nature of what he’s planning. We went a step further and did a no dig garden this year to see how well it would hold up. Basically compost piled atop cardboard for weed control. We’ll see how things go this season.

I think I have said this before but it is worth saying again, Oliver made the best mulboard plow ever made in my opinion. It turned the soil over the best and it was the most easy plow I ever pulled and the 565 Oliver plow was the top plow of them all.

Really liked this video Tim. Especially the use of new tractors with well built older, affordable, and still working implements. Id like to see a video some day on no till corn or beans into roller crimped covercrop without herbicide. Dawn zrx row unit crimpers are pretty neat if you get a chance to check them out.

Most of the farmers around my area in kansas used flat bottom plows, then went back over it with big disc's. The flat bottoms were good for turning up the soil, but they made big clods. You had to disc afterwards or you couldn't plant anything.

You can’t beat a Tuffline disc, I’ve got a 5’ footer I do my gardens with, it’s built like a tank! I usually plow with my new 3035D and disc with the 641 workmaster Ford. I use a Ford 16” two bottom trip plow. And I have a single bottom just it. The disc and plow works great for gardens.

We no longer use a moldboard plow. Buries top vegetation to deep to decompose. Takes too long. I use chisel W/sweeps, disc, and field cultivator.

The plow was adjusted pretty good from what I could see from the video. Breaker plows and brush plows are different, they are special plows designed for that application. There is also the Oliver TNT that was designed to deal with the loss of topsoil after the dust bowl.

We have a neighbor that has a little triangle 3 acre patch that we have what we call Plow Day. The other neighbors bring in their old tractors with 2, 3 or 4 bottom plows. We have old John Deeres, IHs and even a very old Fordson show up. Kind of like Rantoul. At harvest time a couple of old Massey-Harris 35 or 35 Super show up to combine. Fun to watch. This video brings back some memories for me. Spent a lot of time on a John Deere 4020 during my high school and college years. That was a great tractor. I'm interested on how this guy does. No fert, no chems. Wish him the best of luck. Would like to see how he plants and what his plans are for harvesting. Shell the corn or keep in on the ear? Will he dry it? Thanks for sharing Tim. This was a great video for me.

Your exactly right Tim about the 5075E being a great value. In 2018 when I bought mine it was $55,000 retail new with a farmhand and a cab. The cab is actually pretty nice too.

Hard to tell exactly from watching the video, but it looked like you might need to lower the rolling coulters on your plow a couple of inches, Tim. But, it's been..coughcough...a few years since I worked with a moldboard plow, so remember that advice is free.

Decent plowing Tim, you’re a brave man to post a video of plowing, farmers can be very critical of plowing;-). I would have suggested a shallow rototill to level the ground a bit and chew up the sod prior to plowing, it would allow for smoother plowing and you would probably consistently burry more of the sod. Best of luck to this fellow with his corn. He will have to be very careful with the weeds so that they don’t get away on him.

Speed binders are the best ever I love mine I only use the 2nd speed on the drill all ya need. I have had them for a year and I literally load daily ! If your using the manual Ratchet binders those yellow ones are great as well I have both .

Really need some front mounted weights to get the full benefit of a MFWD tractor. If you don't have weights but have a loader and bucket for it that works too. It'll surprise you how much better it pulls and handles when you've got weight on the front end.

Have rears filled with Rimguard. Ran out of power at same time ram out of traction. Not sure why the plow pulls so hard, but I do think the problem is with the plow.

I was watching you start out there thinking “man that speed was plowing in the 40’s, kick it up a notch so it flips it”. I don’t know when but I was told that as the designs changed the speed needed to flip the dirt also went up. Also your coulters didn’t appear to be cutting. They help a lot on converting old hay fields. Your lead one maybe but the trailing one was looking high. It could be that I just seen a bad angle or you hit a rock and it lifted or something. I’d like to see how this non-herbicide goes. The old row crop tractors where king here. They had the nice tall trike front and bolt-on cultivators. Shoot you could even get a Farmall as a “high crop”. You could run them til the corn was tall enough to cut the sun to its competition. These small new tractors I don’t know. Ground clearance. 🤷‍♀️ Keep on it until it’s too tall to cultivate.

The best weed control he will have is to get it disked up and planted so the crop will beat the weeds to coming on. If the corn canopies quick enough the weeds will be stunted and easier to manage.

Great video. Old battle disc vs the drags or the Cultimultcher... old wise tail was the disc chops all the weeds into multiple pieces to regerminate, a drag allows to remove a percentage of the weeds from the main part of the field and drop it on the ends or edges? Any thoughts? The culimultcher used the spring steel drag system and rolling baskets to break dirt clogs... making it easier to run a cultivator through the corn rows.

The disk we had growing up was 3point not trailed, so it had the tractor kinda pushing down, and it was still so light we added weights to it to help keep it in the dirt… lol

We use to rotate crops and cultivate and we never had any weed issues. More then 2 years in a row then we would see more weed issues. This was way back.

I have work to do, but I could sit and watch plowing videos all day. There's something about it that puts me in a trance. I am very interested in seeing the results of this effort. I tend to agree that the corn will do just fine in terms of the fertility, but I agree with you, Tim, that weed competition will be the challenge. I guess the other risk is getting the corn established without nitrogen before the inevitable July drought sets in.

19:58 i'd say you could put more pressure on the outer cutting disk on your plow to get a nicer cut and sharper edge. it might even help to reduce the amount of grass clumps currently escaping onto the unplowed land. but all in all it looks really nice and even.

Need to move the cutter OUTWARD away from the 3rd bottom...but i can’t easily, as it is adjusted out as far as it will go.

The third is the only one with a spring. I replaced it last year. Maybe I need to tighten the spring as you suggest.

the thing about organic food from my thoughts is . That I saw a program about the difference between the two. This was conducted by a botanist that all plant life has to have a protective pest killer. Otherwise, the plant could not survive without producing a pesticide. so putting pesticides on the line helps for a better yeild.No danger to anyone.

Watching this again. Do you think the 5075 could pull bottoms? I recall when we lived in farm country the IH 666 was a very popular tractor in our area and it says on Tractor Data it 58 draw bar hp and they pulled 4 bottom plows. We had an old John Deere M 22 hp and it struggled to pull 2 bottom plow and a Farmall H 2hp that could pull the 2 bottom plow no problem. I loved doing field work, my happy place growing up. The John Deere M was my favorite it had a 2 row cultivator and sickle bar mower.

The most effective organic weed control is persistence and heavy mulching (I use straw or leaves, put down after the crops are about 6 inches tall), but 20 or 30% vinegar will work as an organic herbicide , though it isn't nearly as effective as the inorganic options and will corrode aluminum and steel, and will still kill your crops if sprayed on them.

A couple thoughts. Disc before you plow, the disc will cut the sod so that the plow pulls easier. Secondly no one should be standing on the step, if they slipped the rear tire would run right over them. Just a safety reminder.

@@TractorTimewithTim okay great, I’m glad you have. Just a suggestion from a guy who plows a lot of acres every year. We would never plow unbroken ground because the sod would have to be cut by the plow. We disc, then subsoil with a deep shank ripper, disc again and then plow. The dirt rolls over like butter and the tractor isn’t spinning its tires. I guess if you’re just doing an acre four or five inches deep with old antique equipment what you did is fine. Whatever works for you.

Cool Video ..I have ben on a farm All My Life & We All ways Raised Our Own Food From Beef & Pork To Chickens & Rabbits As Well As A Huge Gardens Until The Past Fuw Years & I Still Cant Eat Sausage From The Store Or Beef But It Is Getting Very Hard To Find The Food I Like Less & Less Family Is Doing it..At One Time We Had Over 350 ish Hogs & 50ish Cows An i Never Drank Store Bought Milk Until i Was a Teen (Still Dont Like/Drink Store Bought Milk) But Now No One Milks any more Every One Seams To Have Gotten To LAZY To Put in The Time ! !We Almost Always Used a Drag Type Harrows & We Added a Set Of 4 V8 Heads onto Them & Concrete Blocks ..It Workd Pretty Well for Us ..lol.

Hi Tim, Great Video as always! Watching you pull the plow, I agree with a couple of other comments, regarding the coulters. They need to be lowered, which will in turn make the plow easier to pull. I was surprised to see your 5 series get so much wheel slip even in 4wd pulling only 3 bottoms. How much they should be lowered will be listed in the manual from Oliver, if you have it.

@@TractorTimewithTim Hi Tim, Actually I think it is a very complex procedure getting it set up. I have a large John Deere hi clearance 2800 series adjustable plow, with 7 bottoms, that took me about a day to get it set up. Some of the steps I had to do several times. I suspect that maybe it took so long was due to it's size, but I'm certainly no expert!

Either my plow is bent, or it has had some ‘modifications’ done on it. The cutters do not run exactly vertical...or at least in line with the plow share. The cutters need to be adjusted outwards and tilted a bit. But they are set out as far as they go right now. I just don’t have the passion to fix no more than I plow. Additionally, I need to swap out the ‘deep suck’ shares for regular shares. This would make it pull a lot easier and much more efficiently. Oliver plows do not need deep suck points to go into the ground.

@@TractorTimewithTim For as much plowing as you do, it's probably fine as is. The trouble nowadays is that not too many folks have much experience setting these up anymore. But they are fun to play with. There is a book by author David Wolfe that provides much information on setting up older Deere plows. I actually got to meet him at one of the tractor club meetings in southern Wisconsin.

I thought about speedbinders, but dont haul enough (yet) to justify buying them. I do "overkill" the securing of my equipment with 4 seperate corner even below 10k. Also, weight is a huge factor. Mahindra 6075 cab with loader scales at apmost 10,000lbs but a hair short. The 75hp pulls a 14ft international disk 2 water barrels filled with a 13'6" wide 5ft long drag 55 gallon barrel mounted drag behind without issue in black clay and sand.

Another question, with that dried cow feed straw/ manure you pass over. Till into cuts. My question is, does that cause a difference in grow crop. Just asking because of natural no chemicals added to the ground. The straw was not the grass that cows eat off ground. When grass grows again and cows eat it. Does that make any difference on grass that they eat. Does It make true grass again.

Tim, from what I could see, it looked like the centerline of draft of your plow was a little to the left of the tractor centerline. I noticed the front wheels were just about always up against the land side of the furrow wall. I believe you could achieve this by widening out Johnny 5's tread width by one step front and rear, then adjust the hitch bar of the plow accordingly. You got the depth and leveling adjustments pretty well spot on! It always amazes me how such small adjustments on a plow have such a large effect of the final results, and their effect on power consumption. Loving watching that rich black soil turn over! Everything around me is a shade of brown or red.

Have a little difficulty adjusting the plow for a few reasons. 1) with it being only a 3 bottom, the room to adjust is minimal. 2) the bolts are all solid ‘rust’ at this point. 3) I think the plow has been modified, as it looks different than other 565 3 bottoms I’ve seen. 4) I’m not willing to set the wheels out any more on the tractor. ...especially to plow only 1 acre!!

@@TractorTimewithTim I can definitely understand all those reasons. We have a set of 5C John Deere rope trip plows that have not been adjusted in any way since the 1950's or before. Yet somehow, they still do a good job of plowing. I know our 720 Diesel loves pulling them.

Tim, I was thinking about this last night as I was disking the field I plowed last week. I think it would be wise for me to clarify, I wasn't meaning to pick on you or your plowing job, but I wanted to give my observations on how to make a good job of plowing into an exceptional one, in the event that plowing with Johnny 5 and that Oliver 565 becomes a common occurrence, and in larger fields.

With the Rimguard, traction and power were about equal. So, pretty good balance I would say.

If I’m not mistaken one lonely farmer uses Wes Pandy uses 2-4-d what ratios you’d have to get in touch some how with ratios need a small chemical sprayer for a gator
