Thanks for all the wonderful comments , I often get asked about what gear I use on the longer treks - here's a video with my back packing gear list which may (or may not !) be of interest Gearlist - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-foLoHAlNPbY.htmlsi=5DaqVkU_iOrz18Kv Thanks for watching Murray
I lived on Jura in 2019, the paps are one of the finest day walks in Scotland. I did them all in the dark also. A magical place. The consistency and quality of your videos is outstanding. Cheers.
You certainly know how to pack a lot into a few days! Was this one of your great filming weekends, or were you truly solitary throughout this circuit? I’m so jealous of the gorgeous places in Scotland with so few people. Thanks for taking us along. ATB
Thanks Erin - I saw one hill runner on the hill and a couple of hikers as I came off the third hill - lovely solitude :) Thanks for watching and commenting as always Erin :) Murray
There is something timeless about going out to these smaller islands. I visited Jura on a bikepacking trip back before the millennium. I’d already been on Arran and done some hills there, then cycled to Lochranza to catch a ferry, another short ride across the peninsula and another ferry to Islay. The ferry should have docked into Port Askaig, but the narrow channel was too rough so I was deposited at Port Ellen instead. My accommodation was over at Port Askaig so I ended up pedalling across in a bit of a headwind. Apparently Islay is known for the winds! The next day I caught a small ferry boat over to Jura, pedalled in as far as could and then did the “Paps” from that side. I had lovely clear weather. Thanks for sharing Murray!
Brings back many fond memories of when my family, along with my cousin Douglas decided to tackle Beinn an Oìr in 2018. My sister is named after the Isle of Jura and each time we visit Islay to see family we always take a day to go and visit my sister island. My cousin booked a later ferry crossing back from the Jura to Islay so we had the entire day to take our time and summit the mountain. It was a balmy 30 degree July day, not a cloud in the sky, was an absolute glorious day to be on the mountain. We then topped it off with a visit to the Jura Hotel for a much earned meal and a wee dram of whisky. It was an adventure we won't soon forget! Yet another great video Murry! Makes me long for a return to the hebrides
Another great video Murray. I think if i had done the first one with you with all the scree, i would have probably stayed there until you had done the other three lol. You certainly packed in a lot of Mountain's in two days. I don't know how you do it. Fantastic view's as usual. ATB mate.
Fantastic I went last September but took my car travelling up from south wales is a fair way but then a long ferry crossing to Islay then we drove across that island to catch yet another ferry to get to Jura no wonder the Jura distillery says it’s easier to get to Peru than Jura 😆 anyway we stayed at the hotel at Craig house which was fantastic did the paps which were awesome I nearly stepped on a large adder snake 😮 but what a trip your right that was Arran and Northern Ireland you could see wonderful hills I will be back as the northern half of Jura looks interesting on the map with two remote bothies up there thanks for sharing very good inspiration to get back there again cheers
Sounds like you had a great trip to Jura too Andrew. The other parts of Jura do look interesting- I was going to drop off the west side to head back but all my procrastination meant I ran out of time for that ! Thanks for watching ATB Murray
That was quite an expedition, one of your best IMHO. Leaving the pack at the bealach is not cheating its common sense, the challenge is finding it again.
I'm quite surprised to see how rough and tough the Paps of Jura are! On a different note, this video has reminded me of the half bottle of Jura that I have in the cupboard and a wee dram is now in order 😀 Thanks for another great video! Slainte 🥃
Heyup Muzza 💥. Love a nice set of paps me😊. Do hope you and yours are thriving. Bestest wishes 🙏👍. There's nothing like crossing the water. Minds me of the ferry from the mainland to Bute spotting the jellyfish blooms along the way 😊
Brilliant Murray, 😎👌Cracking island. Brought back good memories of me & Robin's trip. I remember these steep wee buggers. The scree was horrendous & so was the descent from the Corbett. Cracking view from the wee Marilyn. 👍
Nice video there. Your production is excellent, must take a lot of time. Next visit to Jura May I suggest a wild walk along the west side and around LochTarbet. Great isolation, a bothy, wildlife galore, interesting caves, and ticks. It would be a. great video? Certainly very isolated.
Thanks Robert - thats sounds a good shout. The lady who gave me a lift suggested I head back via the west coast too down to Inver and along the hydro tracks but I ran out of time - the rest of the west coast north looks remote and rugged and ideal for exploring :) Thanks for watching ATB Murray
Hi Murray, they say "great minds think alike" just got back from backpacking the whole west coast of Jura - S to N, 8 days including a rest day ( something I have always wanted to do, just been across to certain parts in the past. ) then today saw your notification ! Fine weather over there, even the bogs were fairly dry ! Great ferry from Tayvallich. Wanted to do the Paps, but too tired after trek - so really enjoyed your video.
Great remote feel Murray, didnt meet many people I expect. Looked particularly hard won hills. Looks amazing. I used to take school kids expeditioning round the north coast of Jura, staying in the coastal caves but never did the hills. Thankyou for sharing
Stunning Murray, the mountains look so peaceful and isolated, a walkers dream :-) I suspect you where right about Northern Ireland, probably the Antrim coast you could see. Just wondering if you have ever walked in the Outer Hebrides? I was on Harris last year on a family holiday and the hills looked like they would be great for a walking trip.
I would love to go to the outer Hebrides- I need to head over to bag Clisham - and have my eye on the Hebridean Way - not sure I’ll get to them for a few years yet though :( keen to visit tho :) Thanks for watching Murray
Kudos for climbing those hills with a tent on your back. They are certainly tough. I had a spectacularly bad off day when I climbed these last summer, which was a shame, as I often see them from my living room in Ayrshire and had been planning the trip for ages! However I spent two nights on Jura with friends, and it is such a lovely friendly island so I'll definitely be back for another go, maybe out of midge season. I remember the ground between Beinn Chaolais and Lochan t-Siob being energy-sappingly boggy and tussocky so going over that extra hill may have actually saved you a bit of time and energy as well as affording spectacular views.
Really enjoyed that Murray, great video, you're one of the few on YT on this topic my Mrs will watch. Her first wild camp was south of Crinnan on the west coast with a fantastic view of the paps and Jura. Thanks for sharing David
Thank you Murray, a lovely video again as usual of a fascinating place, remember watching a Time Team dig near these many moons ago. Looked hard work on the scree, thank you for all the effort to bring the lovely views 😁
What a lovely video again 😊😊😊 you really do spoil us with your adventures.... I saw the Paps when i was on Mull last year and they looked absolutely stunning...Thanks so much as always for revealing how spectacular they were up close and rocky !!! I look forward to the You Tube alert for your videos so much ...they never disappoint..😊😊😊😊...Very professionally produced and edited 🤗🤗🤗🤗
Hi Jonathon- never been but it’s high on my priority list - Clisham and the Hebridean way have caught my eye recently :) Thanks for watching ATB Murray
Really enjoyable video Murray. Beautiful views in between the clag. Full points for sheer effort getting across Scotland to catch the ferry. I can't get across Edinburgh for the bloomin roadworks and diversions.
Must admit I prefer the drive to catch the ferry (typing this in Edinburgh city centre having driven through the traffic!! Lol 😂) Thanks for watching ATB Murray
Toughest walk in the UK imo, and I’ve climbed over 500 different hills in Scotland. Thanks for the great video, brought back great (and some not so great !) memories for me
It's funny how you ended up in Jura climbing the Paps because I was in Campbeltown two weeks ago on holiday and went to Machrihanish and looked over to the Paps wondering if these were Corbett's! Glad you done a video on these as I've always wondered what these were like. Cracking video as always Murray.
Thankyou Murray for yet another wonderful video. We watch you slog it out with the funniest text trying to cope with your accent, from Ballarat, Australia. I’m from Melbourne and met my Scottish Alistair when travelling: kids born in Inverness, Elgin and Forres… then to Australia in ‘87, now retired in Ballarat. We’ll return to visit family and check out the Western Isles in ‘24. Your delightful videos show us how one COULD do it…. However, it’ll be golf courses for Alistair and chasing sheep fleeces and designers for me. You give us so much joy!
What a beautiful place and not that far from home How nice of the people to give you a ride and they recognized you! Climbing up the scree looks hard on the legs and the bigger rocks are definitely ankle twisters Even though you had a little rain, you had some nice weather That was a steep ascent at one point! Love your bloopers at the end Take care and see you in the next video 🇨🇦❤️
Thanks Sue A it was a fine island adventure :) Much fun although it was a bit rough underfoot for most of the way - respect to the hill runners that run over these mountains every year ! Thanks (as always) for watching Murray
Good effort with all that weight, awesome trip ! I did those hills from the west in April 2022 with a much lighter rucksack, had a summit camp on Sgurr na Lapaich, my first summit camp after 30+ years in the hill, no Northern Lights but I did get an Inversion, thanks for taking us along and carrying all that camera equipment !
Great video Murray. Should definitely go back to the Isle Of Arran for a video I remember you going in the early days when cameras weren't as good. My favourite island it's stunning
Brought back memories of these wonderful mountains which have a special place in my heart after family holidays on islay .. glad you had good weather. Well remember the scree of the Sacred Pap. My abiding memory is of the Pap of the Sound which was the first Pap I climbed as a boy
Hi Murray, I am guessing you are the one that was on Kim Grants podcast...the Paps of Jura are on my list and is that the scarp tarptent you have.... cheers
Another great watch, as was your conversation with Andrew Allan earlier in the week. I’ve always meant to ask you what attachments do you use to carry your mini tripod and camera on your rucksack straps?
Thanks / had a great chat with Andrew from Scotlands Nightsky - a really nice chap :) I use a peak design clip (there is a video all about it in my gear playlist on the channel if you wee more info on it 👍👍
I had to laugh when you say you had a long drive; 3 hours. From my home in Zimbabwe the nearest shops are 8-10 hours, weather dependent, in any direction.
Only ever done one Pap but I was fit then ! The west coast of the northern end of Jura is hard but beautiful walking. The whisky is good too, my favourite is called 'The Paps'
I have them plotted in to my GPS and do eventually plan to return to do them.. Having watched your journey over those hills, I certainly can be accused of underestimating them.. thank you for the warning.. I'll go for three days... 😉
They are fantastic mountains Jim - just very rough - I still can’t believe they do a hill running race round them !! They must be much tougher than me that’s for sure :) hope the foot is healing up ok 👍
Wonderful scenery but I don’t envy you all that scree. Chuckles over the bloopers 😂. Please could you tell us what you take as First Aid on these trips? Thanks for taking us with you on these superb trips.👍🥾⛰️😀
Thanks, Murray, I wondered about the first aid when you mentioned how easy it would be to damage an ankle amongst those rocks. As you would say “ Stay safe out there.” A. T. B. Anne.
I enjoy your time spent in camp, almost as much as the climbing scenes. Any idea why there are so many sharp edged rocks up there; geologically speaking? Must be ice/water freezing in the crevices and breaking them off? I laughed so much, when you said, " I don't know where I am!"
Always wanted to visit Jura, that hasn't changed after watching your wild Camp and hike adventure there😊👍 What a stunning place. The paths looked very challenging, we were rooting for those views to appear for you after all your hard work! But what you did see was beautiful. We hope you managed to sample some jura whisky on your trip? Thanks for taking us along, epic as always 😊👌
It’s well worth visiting Jura - hope you ge there soon :) I have never tried Jura whisky 🥃 I like my Speyside whisky - not as keen on the smokier ones (not sure what Jura tastes like tho )👍👍
Great video. I attempted Paps almost 9 years ago with a mate we took bikes on ferry from Kennacraig and then short hop to Jura camped beside Craighouse hotel. My mate and I managed Beinn Shiantaidh and Beinn an Oir but bailed out of last one. They are indeed very steep. Just back from Rum and they are equally steep!! I put a video on YT about 8 years ago called Jura August 2014 not nearly as professional as yours but great memories.
Hi Andrew, afraid its not a plug in , I map these from scratch using after effects (sometimes takes as long as making the vlog TBH !!lol) I wish there was a decent app for this . Thanks for watching Murray
You are such good fun, Murray. And besides all the summits and blink bonnie you show us, I could listen to you 'yabbering' and 'procrastinating' all day. Loved it. A proper beach at the end and all :)
Wow Murray, what a cracking trip that looked, they looked three 'proper' mountains. What a stunning place Jura looks. Thanks for sharing your trip as always. Cheers Dave
Belting video Murray as always. And is it just me that thinks the Paps of Jura sounds like a place on a planet in the Star Wars Galaxy 😂 Thanks for sharing Murray. All the best.
Hi Murry, do viewers pass comment in a negative way about the weather when it comes in. I often wonder as you mention the weather when it closes in. I'd understand wanting to share the views when the weather is clear as it's pure magic. For me I'm truly grateful that you get out there rain or sun. I think your videos are awesome. Your videos are always accurate and shows really well the need for good clothing, skills, and determination to get out of there. For the record i love the beautiful views but i also really love the parts of your video when your grinding out the Kms in the rain and wind, slogging up a hill or along the glen. Video can never fully capture the awesome majesty of the hills but when the weathers in it feels more personal watching you wrapped up in the wet weather gear with the mist and or rain Swerling around you battling on not sure if you will be rewarded by clear views. What I've gone a long way around saying is your vids are great rain or shine. Cheers
Hi - don’t get any complaints on the weather - think most people realise the mountain weather in Scotland can’t always be nice :) in fact the videos where the weather is bad usually get more views than the good weather videos ! Think people like to see me suffering 😂😂👍 Thanks for watching ATB Murray
Once again a very enjoyable trip out to and up the challenging hills of Scotland. Thanks for all the effort you put into the podcast you are good enough to share with us!
Brilliant video..Jura looks amazing and yes you can see Jura from the northern coast of Northern Ireland...great pitch for tent...many thanks for great video and best wishes
Thanks for confirming Andy - I am sure it must have been Northern Ireland as it seemed to be beyond the Mull of Kintyre ! Thanks for watching ATB Murray
@@ScotlandsMountains although I live further south in Northern Ireland, towards the Mourne Mountain range, our family stay for a week each year in Bushmills on the North Coast...on a clear day many of the Scottish Islands can be seen and if course great close ups of the Mull Of Kintyre..
The moment you left your backpack... I had chills. I assume you've taken out GPS and first aid, but honestly can't see neither water nor emergency clothes layers. I hate to be a party pooper, I know you are experienced and leaving a backpack only for a wee while, but I think you know the best what could go wrong (and I don't mean getting lost, I'd fear a fall and it's repercussions). Touch wood, stay safe, and thank you for another great video.
I actually did a piece to camera on that exact subject ie what to take and leave in the pack - ie the emergency kit , can’t remember if it made the final edit though !
