Hi Xavier 🫶 What a wise man’s approach to let your Dawn Redwood untouched in this condition. 🙏👍 Love your DR forest, especially the bear. And the cuttings 😍 Meanwhile my big DR gained strength the last couple of weeks, though I decided to let most of the new leaves on the tree, this time, to thicken the trunk and branches. Pruning maybe later on. 😊 So far, enjoying summer (rain) and your video 😘 Cheers 🙋‍♀️ Martina

Thanks for the good advice re these trees - restraint and pruning! Your weather is startlingly different from mine today. You are in a coat on a cloudy day. In Boise it is clear skies, 101F forecast and the trees need watering twice. Working on my greenhouse relocation is possible only in the early mornings. Trees wait patiently for the final product and new placement on benches. My dawn redwoods and bald cypress are in mostly shade with lots of water to keep them happy. I took a bunch of cuttings when I trimmed the bald cypress and some seem to be making it. The dawn redwood cuttings gave up the ghost. I tell them what lies ahead based on your videos!

Hi Xav can’t directly comment on dawn redwood as I have never had any in my collection but the advice you are giving seems sound and relates to other species the ones you have do seem in the main to be in good health, they as you say do need a lot of water in the summer. I haven’t commented your last couple of vids mate, I did watch them but had a few other things to deal with. The wedding went without a hitch the weather could not have been better so a happy dad. I absolutely love your Dawn Redwood forest. I love the way each trunk bends differently - gives a completely different vibe than a traditional forest. Dynamic - especially with Brother Bear on the prowl. When/how do you prune your apexes to control height?

Great video. One of my trees in my forest has died back. Well the leaves have anyway. I assume it's to do with the sun, so I've moved it into the greenhouse to recover. I hope I don't lose the whole tree. It would ruin the planting.

The chances are that it will push out loads of new buds from the trunk in a few weeks time. I have a smaller one that has done exactly the same. If it has a heealthy root system then it should bounce back :)

I would probably do it now but I know that a lot of people advise late winter just before the buds start to swell.
@TheMrjoehughes
@TheMrjoehughes 26 дней назад
@@XaviersBonsaiRetreat hmm, I suppose the options are to stunt its growth now and let it recover before leaf fall, or reset it all before spring pushes. I would like to wire at the same time and to be honest it’s still very young and would not handle wiring very well it’s still very purple on this year’s growth. Whereas if I wait until it hardens I can both chop and wire. The growth I have had just in 3 months is major, I can’t believe the speed these grow, the stem is 4 x thicker and easily two thirds as high, amazing trees. It’s like they’re on steroids lol, it’s gone from 30cm - 90cm easy and I’m sure it’ll keep going 👍🏻
