Joe Klecker and Olli Hoare also have sub 4 indoor altitude marks of 3:56.8 and 3:58.4 respectively in Boulder, Colorado.

@@andrewkatz6649 Thanks for pointing that out andrew. Quite frankly, before this video, I thought no human had ever run a sub 4 mile in the State of Colorado. So am I to assume that Klecker is the fastest miler ever in Colorado ?? But, to backtrack just slightly, as I was watching this video, I blurted out in my mind, "Nico has just run the best ever high elevation mile". - On a sidenote, I HATE when people say "at altitude" because it has no meaning. If you're 5 feet above sea level, you're "at altitude". LOL. The other thing we should also consider, is density altitude which is "altitude" corrected for non standard temperature. As an example if you're in Denver elevation 5280 and it's a hot day, the density altitude probably will be perhaps 8000 feet.

Aidan Troutner also ran sub four with the time of 3.59.2 at the BYU indoor track just last week. BYU does sit at 4,500 feet in elevation, which is a lot lower than flagstaff.
@iRunfastXC
@iRunfastXC 6 месяцев назад
Both are oversized tracks, which is interesting. NAU's is 300m and turns are are softer and smoother than BYU, but unbanked. BYU's track is 321.8m, straights are long, but turns are asymetrical, with one being slightly (and I mean barely) banked, but smooth, and the other basically being two 90º angles with a tiny bank to them. It can also get pretty dusty and HOT in there, so respiration can be an issue. I'd say it's much easier to get in a rhythm at NAU's track, and it's overall an easier place to run fast, but BYU's has its advantages, namely the longish straightaways and its altitude. Regardless, BOTH are much easier to run fast on than an unbanked 200m track.

Maybe Nico should focus on the 1500m and mile events. In the longer distances he's usually out fast but fades later in the race. I don't know if this is a matter of conditioning or if he's a natural miler like Josh Kerr or Jake Wightman. All the same, I think he should focus on the mile, the 1500m and perhaps the odd 800m as well.
@mustardseedsociety
@mustardseedsociety 6 месяцев назад
Probably a valid point - this video was a bright spot in my day because breaking the 4 minute mile at a high elevation is quite an amazing feat. Frankly I think the NCAA conversion tables are flawed. What would be so cool if it were possible, is Nico get maybe 7 or 8 days of rest and run the same exact effort in a mile indoor race at or near sea level and whatever his time is, you can come up with more accurate conversion tables. Also comparing indoor to indoor would be fantastic in creating new conversion tables because the indoor temperatures are probably very close. That is important because what the NCAA conversion tables don't factor in is DENSITY ALTITUDE. Density altitude being corrected altitude for non standard temperature.

That was just before he got banned. The ONLY reason we were able to talk is because I'm a friend with a personal friend of his. First of all Reinhold Messner climbed Everest solo back in 1980 monsoon season without supplemental oxygen, that alone teach us altitude does affect us all differently, indoor altitude mile isn't converting well for sea level outdoor mile as hilly StanChart Nairobi Marathon have great local altitude runners on the line and I was closely watching 2.11:×× winner beating group of six at final stretch, when Kipchoge or Bekele or Cheptegei have off day the struggle to sub2.10 at 'easy' course of Boston, Valencia etc.

I understand that running at high elevation is significantly harder but 8 secs in one mile seems little too much. It is definitely more challenging long distance races like 5k and above. But 1 mile maybe just few secs. I mean these guys live and train at high elevation they are used to elevation too also don’t forget about that kind of bounce tracks are likely faster than outdoor tracks and zero wind. Yes it is a fantastic time but I wouldn’t call it 3:49 equivalent.

Let me guess - about 2 or 3 % body fat - extremely lean, yet at the same time very strong. And toss in better than average top end speed and a genetic propensity for higher than average VO2 max, shake it all up and let it settle, you get a world class middle distance runner - a guy who is able to beat 99.999 % of all humans on the planet in running.

@@Venxlation Hey when I was in HS we had a guy who joined the track & XC team. The guy was built very solid and he could be a football player or baseball player. He trains for like a month and in his first meet he clocks 4:50 in the mile. Yes, 4:50 is not going to win State, but for a newby rookie runner who looks like he could be on varsity football, that was pretty impressive. Frankly, I think the overriding factor is top end speed. The more speed you have, the more you got to work with. Our top runner in HS ran the mile in 4:11 and he used to say he had no speed. But in an all out 400, he could clock 52 which is not exactly slow. 98 +% of all humans on the planet could not clock a 52 second 400 meter or faster. I'd be willing to bet that Jakob can break 47 in the 400. Can Jakob break 45 ?? Probably not. But Jakob has speed, maybe not Usain Bolt speed, but he's got speed which is why he runs a 3:43 mile and 7:54 two mile.
@Venxlation
@Venxlation 6 месяцев назад
@@mustardseedsociety factual but we had an 800 guy and our team trains lots of speed so he ran a 2:00 - 1:59 a lot and his mile was only a 4:40 but his 400 was also under 52. There also a guy in our state who ran a 4:10 and he could clock 49 sec 400m. It really varies but you can be slow and dominate in the longer distances, and sometimes it's a genetic thing. Like a Kenyan where your body is built to sustain a high cadence pace and good oxygen systems.

You are completely wrong in your assessment of the chronometric loss. Indeed at the 1968 Olympics, Jime Ryun ran in 3'37"8 over 1,500m while his world record was 3'33"1. This at an altitude of 2200m. We therefore find a difference of 4" 7. For the mile this makes approximately 5". Conclusion a performance of around 3'57"3 therefore corresponds to approximately 3' 52"3 and not 3'49" I wish you a good day.
