I am always kind of impressed how little time it takes to learn something seemingly so impossible and cool. I mean, I know he is having luck streaks and he is 90% consistent or something, but still...he gets the hang of very cool things in less than an hour

I think most of us would try something 'impossible' like this a handful of times and then give up if we didn't manage it in the first few minutes. I love how these videos show what you can achieve if you have a bit more dedication, and that it doesn't take anything like 10,000 hours to master some things that initially appear impossible.

At first I assumed this wouldn’t be a very consistent trick, and the man in the video just had all the perfect conditions. But once again, Mike, you impressed me! I can imagine that after enough times, this trick could be used on a rainy day consistently.

Though, the man in the video threw it overhand, pretty far, and it floated back to him. Not quite what Mike did, who threw it underhand and it basically went straight down

@@CrustyTheMoist well the whole point was to open the umbrella with a single throw and a catch. The speed will vary depending on the umbrella length, and if your going for consistency then it makes more sense to throw it a bit closer towards you.

Just to note: Mike said it's pretty good weather and wind less. The video has wind and rain that why the umbrella was able to float back to him. The technique would probably change depending on how windy it is

To me, the original video seemed like a one-in-a-million chance type trickshot that one might film for the novelty of it. Mike on the other hand, took it in his stride to learn it as yet another skill to add to his arsenal. Mad respect to him for taking the seemingly novel and amusing to a whole new level.

The smoothness and fluidity very much implies that he has been working to do it. It was confident and looked practiced. I'm sure that if Mike managed to get the technique used in the video rather than developing a new one, it'd have looked and worked a bit better.

Well, to me, the original video seemed fake as all Hell, and that would be why the lighting changed instantly, just before the umbrella changed direction

@@ashscott6068 It didn't look like the lightning changed to me, just that it was re-framed. Didn't look fake to me. We just learned that it is simple enough to do with practice, and it looked fairly natural to my eyes.

Seems like when you throw underhand, the umbrella floats away from you after it unfurls. In the original video, he threw it overhand and it floated towards him. While it seems like the underhand throw was easier, perhaps the overhand throw would be better if you could get it down.

I would like to see a cool video of Mike performing many of the skills he learned as a part of his daily life. Like one skill kind of leading into the next, like casually juggling fruit while making breakfast, then he goes for a bike ride and has to go up the stairs, then he locks his bike and come back and loses the key, so now he has to pick the lock. Just a combination of many of the skills if that makes sense.

I feel like what made the original look so cool, is that it didnt seem like he was even trying. He wasnt looking at the umbrella or raising his hand before time. It was a sync perfect (minis the umbrella hitting the hat). Would love to see a full recreation of it.

If you thew it over-arm, it would open at a different angle and float back towards you rather than away from you allowing you to walk slower.

In all of Mike's videos, but especially this one, you can really see the learning process. Going from just throwing an umbrella onto the ground, to actually getting it to open almost every time, to finally catching it consistently.

Did it help changing umbrellas? You started with a hooked handle. The final one had a different canopy and straight handle. Looked to be a self opening umbrella as well.

Two things that I feel like has to be addressed. Just an observation. 1) to me the overhand looks cooler. When you uttered: “Underhand is easier” I thought it was a shame. Since you do not generally set out to do easier, but to do IT. 2) it seems like the overhand, because of the rotation, would naturally float towards you. Rather than away, as it did in the beginning for you.

The thing about things like this, and Mike understands this as well; is that they are WAY simpler than they seem visually. And having that mindset is what makes him or you learn something seemingly hard very quickly. Never go into something thinking it's impossible or too difficult.

The one he changed to automatically opens when you press a button by the handle. Seems he had already pressed the button and is holding the umbrella shut before he throws it.

The problem with throwing it underhand is it inherently wants to fly away from you when it pops open. Whereas when you throw it overhand, it wants to fly back to you.

Underhand method is cool because it pops open above you. But the overhand "tomahawk" method is cool because it opens at an angle and flies towards you. I bet you could do it with a smaller umbrella.

The one in the video looked way better due to the angle of it opening and how it's coming back to him (going backwards) not just falling down with a bit of speed like the one you did, it's amazing anyways but was hoping you to do the same one he did.

I think the reason why is there was perfect weather and no wind when he practiced and the wind is required for the umbrella to be able to comeback to him if he throws it forward

@@hauler-hx6gw I don't really think that the wind is required or was visible in the video, you can clearly see the umbrella unfold just by the wind facing it when falling which ain't that much of a force compared to the force from the throw speed instead of free falling, the forward throw would even put more air pressure on the umbrella to fold open and then come back to him if thrown right as it was with a perfect angel to go back to him.

The overhand throw has the umbrella spinning in an easier direction to grab, where instead of the canvas spinning towards your head, it's the handle. I am only 4 minutes into the video and it's hurting my brain he hasn't noticed it yet. I wonder if he will find out.

But here's the question: Could it work in a practical scenario? This proved it works reliably on a clear, windless day- but what about when it's raining/windy? If it were to suddenly start downpouring and you actually needed the umbrella, could you do it?
