It's certainly baffling and it seems to not be uncommon in speedrunning communities and such from what I've seen on some YT channels that cover such scandals.

Maybe they start to lie to themselves that they deserve the record, so in their head they justify cheating. I used to not count my bad solves on cstimer because I told myself "That's not really me, that's just a fluke, in reality, I'm better than that." which was false, and a delusion that lead to me cheating my own times at home. I obviously don't do that anymore, but I'd bet it's a similar mindset with WR cheaters. They just think they deserve it.

This was truly one of the craziest controversies in cubing in a long while, I think ever since the 3BLD scandal of Matyas Kuti. Great video, and it shows that (unlike the calculus you said you did) put a lot of effort into researching for the video, as well as editing!

I was in a comp where Kalindu competed (not the one where he cheated), and he was one of the delegates My placement got moved up months after the comp ended because the WCA removed his records

Very few scramble states take a full 20 moves with the optimal solution. Most optimal solutions are 17-18 moves long. So theoretically, if you could find the optimal solution consistently (which is obviously a colossal if), a 19 mean wouldn’t be too luck-dependent.
