Ever notice you become bored
in your art and life if things stays the
same for too long?
We feel alive when something different
shows up. It happens when the sun shines
after a week of overcast days. It can
happen by adding a bright pink color
to a drab grey painting,
In life and art, however, the edges,
the place where one thing changes
to the next is especially potent.
Where that drab grey suddenly shifts
to bright pink is a visually powerful spot.
So is where the deep blue of
a sky meets a sparkly sea.
It took me 8 days lost in the middle
of the ocean to learn this. But you don’t
have to. I can just show you now.
You can more easily improve your art
once you know that edges are where
the visual potency resides.
Try paying attention to the transitions
between different areas in your art.
Make them juicy. In other words,
let the viewers (and you) feel
enlivened by change.
Do you pay attention to the
edges in your art?

Since I watched this the first time some months ago, I always think "how do the edges make me feel?" All my art has improved by paying attention to every edge. Thank you. Regards from Iceland

Again Nick, you offer such a golden nugget of advice...again it is those differences that will make our art interesting. Also your kitchen table art wednesdays have been such a great source of joy, though I don't 'comment much I appreciate you, your team and guest artists. Thank you.

Edges are a common concept in permaculture. You can observe that there is a natural increased activity around edges....excess grass and weeds around fences, rhriving life on the banks of a dam, where roads run along fields, forests meet grasslands, etc. More broadly you might look at the front of the stage at a rock concert compared with the rest of the crowd, an aerial view of beach goers and waves in the shoreline compared to the rest of the beach, the checkouts between a supermarket layout and the outside, the list goes on. It is true that all things are defined by itheir edges...

You hear all about edges with traditional oil painting in more traditional still life, portraits and landscapes, it was really nice to have edges spoken about as applied to abstracts! 👏🏻👏🏻 thank you!

Your life experience of a boat in a storm and the impact of no horizon smacks of truth. I am working on my art creating a feeling of being grounded amidst any chaos in my life or the viewers life. For whatever reason, I am uncomfortable creating those lines, bold or soft. But your message tells me to add this element. Am giving it a go. Thank you so much.

in my painting class, my professor's main critique was to work on my corners and edges. Although he was probably referring to the physical edges of the canvas, you've just made me realize how much more important it is to have that edge within the work itself.

You are my “Mentor” Nick. Just a touch of you at times, brings me back to my understanding my passion to paint. I get so stuck, though , because I love it all, abstract, floral, digital, gelli print (new mono printing fun), oils, acrylic, cold wax....textiles.....on and on....could you talk about this? Sometimes I think it is only me and ADD brain. There is just too much wonder in it all!!!

This is very timely for me as I now know that in my last painting session I was just feeling some interest in those very same parts of my painting but I wasn't as conscious of it to the degree of importance you placed on it till I heard you. It's really opened up another door to me. Thank you.

It's amazing how even your briefest videos refer us back to fundamental areas that ALWAYS seem to anticipate an element that I'm struggling to parse in a painting I'm working on. I scaled up about four weeks ago, painting on hardboard, sheeteock, MDF, &c, surfaces from 48 x 48 in. to 48 x 96, & this video reinvigorated my whole day because one of the 48x96 got away from me a bit & indeed some inattention & whatever else led to the blurring or covering of some of the sharpest edges on the boldest of wildest marks/splatters. Thanks Nicholas. Hope you know how much your work & compassion & experience + knowledge sustain. Bless.

This is a year later and I just ran into this video. I love different edges, most of all the more contrasty ones, those that seem to want to go off elsewhere but stop mid-way. They are like interesting people whom you want to hang out with. Although the sharp edges are necessary as well, those are the buttoned up folks and much less interesting.

I've always loved edges. During my explorations of my Inspirations; I found just how important they are to me. I found edges with shadows are even more exciting. I love all edges and I'm noticing more and more in my work how rough edges versus straight edges are most exciting. Of course contrast is brought in to it. Now I'm looking for techniques to bring very rough edges into small amorphous shapes. Replicating aged walls etc. Anyone have any ideas?

Edges are very important and really interesting dimensions of how we experience ourselves and the world. Edges are for me different ways of playing with soft, and and hard edges creating different tonalities - but the experience of an event, a performance, a painting or whatever are also always dependent on the focus and the context. It somehow mirrors and embodies different states of consciousness - floating in air or under water e.g. can be a blissfull experience and for me it is also a way of expressing different rhythms of the experience.
