It’s actually a very well written and comprehensive book ru-vid.comUgkxhgbP-6hUnXu_QRaoHgLztgsI0YF3HqR0 . I wanted to pair this with an updated book on local codes to start planning a post-retirement dream shop. I think I have just about everything I need between the two. The extra plans available for purchase towards the end are priced almost as much as full home plans, not little sheds however.

I think he forgot to mention your mentality changes. I don’t own a business, I’m still working on my apprenticeship but when I do little side jobs alone for family and friends, my mentality is completely different. I’m not thinking about the clock or keeping a fast pace so my boss can make money. I’m looking at the big picture which makes me work more efficiently and with more ease. I have recently been putting myself in that mindset at work, imagining that it’s my business too and my stress seems to go down oddly enough. The trick when working for someone is finding a boss you can be around every day;) I’d take that over better pay any day.

Lesson in business. Find the youngest switched on accountant preferably from a small independent firm but not on main Street. Take advantage of company auction sales or tenders as they are going under.

I always try to get the materials delivered the day before I need them. Lumberyard deliveries are not reliable. My first thing in the morning is not the same as theirs.

I think Aussies and Kiwis are way beyond in carpentry skills, compare to the US. they still perform the old school way, and they are proud of that. they dont need to rush, customer value a quality hammer and nail work over staple nail gun crap...

That's always the way. Truck shows up as the rain starts. You have no option but to unload in torrential rain.

I am an Australian living in NZ, been here for over 40 years, and on occasion people still pick me for Australian. Our accents are very different, at first I thought the difference was very weird; my flat mate asked me to put a pun in the bun, and talked about going swumming. (Pin in the bin and going swimming.) Now, some Australian accents make me cringe, particularly the way many Australians pronounce Australia and Australian.

What would you say is the best way to get into building? Is uni the best pathway, via apprenticeship? Or are there better options? Cheers
@ScottBrownCarpentry

I found a building company through people I knew, they took me on as an apprentice through Unitec . That was a while ago now though. A good start may be to get in touch with BCITO and see what they recommend
