That's what we asked the Dutch language students of the BLC Dutch Summer School.
* What is the meaning?
'Hottentotten' is a name that Dutch settlers gave to the Khoikhoi, a population in Africa. They gave this name because of their click language. The word 'hottentot' reflected how this language sounded to the Dutch ears. The word 'hottentot' is nowadays considered politically incorrect. In some places (like South Africa) the word became a swear word. The word 'hottentottententententoonstelling' literally means: an exhibition with tents for the Khoikhoi people. It is a made up word: the Khoikhoi didn't live in tents, these exhibitions never existed. The word is known as a very long word in the Dutch language. Try it yourself: ask a Dutch person to come up with the longest word in Dutch... 50% chance they will say 'hottentottententententoonstelling'.

@@dewaarheid2906 Well, I did say most. It was definitely one of those words you learned in elementary school back in the late 70s. Now I understand most millenials probably already look at Generation X (we are still the largest demographic) as dinosaurs, but we aren't quite there yet ;) I wonder know how familiar you are with mid 80's 'turbotaal' as well if you aren't familiar with that word.

The linguistic fun of this word lies (of course) in the repetitive middle bit: "ten-ten-ten-ten". In a book called "Opperlandse Taal- & Letterkunde" (1981), author Battus (pseudonym for Hugo Brandt Corstius) came up with an even more ludicrous compound word in Dutch containing a repetitive element: "lekkerkerkerkerkerkerkerker". No less than eight times "ker", one after the other. Have you figured out the meaning yet? We'll start at the end: it is the dungeon ("kerker"), which is situated in the bay window ("erker"), which is inside a church ("kerk") in the Dutch city of Lekkerkerk. For expats: Lekkerkerker is the genitive case of the name of this city (which is situated in the province of South Holland). In other words: it's the Lekkerkerker-kerk-erker-kerker. 😄 😉 😂

Hahaha, so nice. I usually use this word to tell foreigners what they can expect following Dutch classes while in the Netherlands haha. I also love the winning 60 letter word "Kindercarnavalsoptochtvoorbereidingswerkzaamhedencomitéleden". It's a real word, no kidding. When you do this again, take thát word. Hilarious. Even most Dutch people cannot pronounce this in just one time.

bibiboe yea but it was the longest word in our dictionary back in the day (is a longer one now i think) so it was a famous word used alot in this game, you didnt even need those letters, if some one puts in alot of _ _ _ _ you already knew the word 😂

I think "zandzeepsodemineraalwatersteenstralen" was at one point the longest word in the Dikke van Dale dictionary. You can make basically infinite words though: Handvaardigheidslokaalvloerbedekkingschoonmaakmiddelfabrieksdirecteursopleidingschoolgebouw (etc.) And if you commited a crime in Lekkerkerk, you could be locked up in the Lekkerkerkerkerker.

This is only _officially_ the longest word in the Dutch language (it might actually be a variation of this word, I'm not enirely sure). If you dig arround you'll find much longer words that exist in pretty much all languages. For instance: connectine, a proteïn whose full name contains tens of thousands of letters. A slightly more readable one is hexakosioihexekontahexaphobia (the fear of the number 666) though it's a bit shorter.

Hottentot is eigenlijk een scheldnaam, het betekent stotteren, maar wordt gebruikt om mensen met een kliktaal (maken een klikgeluid met de tong) aan te duiden, eigenlijk heet de stam Khoi, ook gebruikt voor de Xhosa stam.

one of its most common uses is the "hangman" word game. and the word can get much longer, just by adding more words. hottentottententententoonstellingonderdirectriceassistentepennenbakje funny enough my phone thought that one was too long and refused to let me type it, I had to type bakje as a separate word and then remove the space. it's the penholder of the female assistant of the female under-director of an exhibition of tents of the hottentots. in Dutch the length of a word like this is really only limited by your imagination.

@@woutervanr 'lynx' is a very good one to use too. People think that how longer the word, how difficulter it is, but it actually works the other way around. Shorter words are much harder to solve, because you cant just call out some letters in the hope they will appear somewhere in the word.

Yes in South Africa we will say: hottentottentoonstelling so you have the extra "ten" in Dutch. But then the Afrikaans language originated from Dutch language.

'tentoonstelling' is actually also a compound word from the words 'ten' (to) 'toon' (show) 'stelling' (construct/proposition) so it roughly means 'proposes to show things'. (kind of, not sure how to put the meaning of 'stelling' in this context succinctly, but this is close).

No, here, "stellen" is used in the literal sense, which we don't really use in modern dutch in isolation anymore, but it's still in other words like "opstellen" or "uitstellen" (to postpone). It just means to place something somewhere (Also see "stal" and the verb "stallen" - to store something somewhere). A "stelling" as in a proposition is the figurative use of the same thing, you're sort of "putting your proposition out there". In tentoonstelling it just means you've placed things somewhere to show them, "je stelt iets ten toon" "you're placing something somewhere in order to show it".

@@zndernaam zou niet goed zijn... het woord zou al compleet zijn voor het galgje gemaakt is... puur omdat er zoveel verschillende letter in zitten. het zou veel beter zijn om een kort woord met weinig verschillende letters te hebben... waardoor het raden van de juiste letters sneller het galgje maakt en de radende groep (of persoon) eerder hangt

Every Dutch kid encounters this word at one point in a game of galgje (hangman). It is hard to guess the word due to its length and repeating letters. But once you have encountered it once you will be able to immediately recognise the word due to its length alone.

Dit woord is niet bedacht om te laten zien hoe lang Nederlandse woorden kunnen worden, maar om te laten zien hoe vaak een identiek gespelde lettergreep (ten) achter elkaar in 1 woord kan voorkomen (4 keer). De hierboven genoemde Lekkerkerkerkerkerker bevat zelfs 6 maal ker, maar correct afgebroken is het Lek-ker-ker-ker-kerk-er-ker, dus het gaat dan niet meer om identiek gespelde lettergrepen.

Its a fun word to explain compound words to children. The alliteration 'tentententen' just makes it more funny. It is not supposed to be a 'real life' thing: there never was an exhibition of the tents of the hottentotten, its just how compounding words work: you take something, and just add things to it. For example: you can have a factory, that makes chairs: factory=fabriek, chair=stoel, many chairs=stoelen: stoelenfabriek. A fabriek where they make stoelen. A stoelenfabriekschilder is a man painting the stoelenfabriek. We can just add more words: stoelenfabriekschilderrustruimte, the place the painter of the factories of chairs take a rest. stoelenfabriekschilderrustruimteontwerper. The man that designs the resting place for the man who paints the factory where they make chairs. stoelenfabriekschilderrustruimteontwerperspen. The pen used by designers who... etc. stoelenfabriekschilderrustruimteontwerperspenhouder. The object holding the pen(s) for the ... etc. stoelenfabriekschilderrustruimteontwerperspenhouderfabriek. The factory where they make these penholders. stoelenfabriekschilderrustruimteontwerperspenhouderfabrieksdirecteur. The CEO of that factory. stoelenfabriekschilderrustruimteontwerperspenhouderfabrieksdirecteurassistente would point to the assistent of the director of the factory where they make penholders for the pens used by designers of the restrooms of painters of the factory where they build chairs. We rarely compound more then two words, though. For clarity.

When it comes to compound words the German language can easily top that. A similar German word is: Donaudampfschifffahrtsgesellschaftskapitämsmützenabzeichen. And yes, 3 f In a row is correct spelling

I had once to type an even longer word in a report, so a real word with a sensible meaning, not just an ad-hoc composed word: bestuurdersaansprakelijkheidsverzekering.

I have never, ever in my life used that word or even thought of it... I heard of it but only know what a tentoonstelling is 🤷‍♂️ the word has no use whatsoever 😂

In Hungary we know the word "hottentotta" because of a 100 year old cabaret song. It is about a pretty, naiv hottentotta young woman. It is not pc at all. The longest Hungarian world: elkelkaposztasithatatlansagaitokert. Not real meaning too... But I think the German longest word is longer and crazier than this.

Hottentots was the people the Dutch fpund living in the Cape in South Africa.We Also call a Prayingmantis a Hottentots God in Afrikaans.

For me it originated from a Belgian comedian who explained graphical how a hottentotter looks like, specially the hair got specific attention i am dutch btw. The context was lost on me with the years past. Now I get the joke. It's a quite racist discribtion of these people

Van de publicatie “Words matter”: De term ‘Hottentot’ verwijst naar de Khoikhoi volken in het westen van ZuidAfrika. Het is een Nederlandse koloniale term die voor het eerst werd gebruikt in de 17de eeuw en die gebaseerd was op een imitatie van de klank van de taal van de Khoikhoi. ‘Hottentot’ had de connotatie van cultureel achterlijk of primitief, stereotypen die werden gecreëerd in de vroege koloniale periode. In de 19de eeuw werden Khoikhoi mensen met geweld uitgebuit. Ook werden ze tentoongesteld, als illustratie van een primitief type. Eerst als entertainment, maar later in het kader van wetenschappelijke koloniale kennis. Een bekend voorbeeld was de zogenaamde Hottentot Venus, Sarah Baartman, die vanaf 18101815 in Europa werd getoond. Haar stoffelijk overschot werd tot 1974 in een Frans museum tentoongesteld en pas in 2002 teruggebracht naar ZuidAfrika.

Theres a lot of people explaining the ins and outs below and above... the reason this is not a word is because scrable won't accept it... sure you can do this in dutch, but it's not a word; its a "Samenstelling" (composite)

Hottentot is not a swear word on South Africa. The word you are thinking of is similar but not the same. Look at the mountain range called die Hottentots-Hollandsberge
