1st time I ever saw this lady it was in Midtown Memphis. She was serving coffee at the Deliberate Literate on Union Avenue at Rembert around the corner from where I lived. I used to walk down there to get my New York Times every morning. One day she was playing and singing & I ran back home to get my wife to come back and hear her. It was amazing. Valerie June is an angel on this earth shorn of wings for some reason or other. But God knows she still has her beauty and her voice. Most spiritual moment I've ever experienced. So glad she's so wordly known.
I have been through Memphis to see Graceland. I had been through Little Rock, even Columbus Miss. I am a Yankee...closer to the Catskills tradition of perhaps The Felice Brothers but this woman, this woman has no choice but to accept the hybrid of roots music in America by I don't know what means put upon her. And I hear it. I hear her acceptance.
I just came across Valerie June a couple of weeks ago and I have enjoyed digesting her music. I appreciate her version of this song. Also as a non-musician this is the first time I seen someone play the tambourine on the floor! I could hear it while she was playing but didn’t see it until the end. I respect her creativity!
I keep seeing this song sung out of bluegrass style and thinking, I ain't gonna like this and then pow! man, do I ever like this. Sure enjoyed your take on one of my all time favorites.
Praise God and honor Him each Sabbath in worship. Ecclesiastes 12:13 Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man. Revelation 14:12 Here is the patience of the saints; here are those who keep the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus. Exodus 20:8 “Remember the (7th day, Saturday) Sabbath day, to keep it holy. 9 Six days you shall labor and do all your work, 10 but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord your God. In it you shall do no work: you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your male servant, nor your female servant, nor your cattle, nor your stranger who is within your gates. 11 For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it. Honor the Creator of the Sabbath on Saturday. Not on Sunday, which is the first day of the week. God only blessed the seventh day and made it a holy Sabbath day Isaiah 66:22-23 For as the new heavens and the new earth Which I will make shall remain before Me,” says the Lord, “So shall your descendants and your name remain. And it shall come to pass from one New Moon to another, And from one Sabbath to another, All flesh shall come to worship before Me,” says the Lord.
