yes. Blackthorne did prevent Toranaga from being discovered by Ishido's men as they're leaving Osaka Castle, and saved Toranaga buried by the earthquake, and told Toranaga about Spain and Portugal's plan to control all the non-Catholic governments of the world, so that when Toranaga would became shogun, he would ban Christianity, saving Japan from western colonialism.
Actually he is being made a fool. The audience knows the Japanese are keeping their cool and won't kill Blackthorne out of hand, if he's unarmed. Yet he refuses to do so out of fear or insecurity.
