"You know you're in trouble when people stop listening to sad music. Because the moment they stop listening to sad music, they don't want to know anymore... They're turning themselves off" - T. Yorke
@urgiduurrgghh i think it depends on the person though, A lot of people find comfort in sad music becuase it's so human and real. Thom's and Radiohead's music is human.
I find Radioheads emotive music so soothing and grounding. Sometimes I feel clogged up and weighed down with a general frustration and the melancholy of the music and Thoms beautiful voice provides me with a way to release the pent up emotions and reflect.
@@newsletter4826 dude thom can say whatever he'd like i dont think he has a pretty big impact on politics. im sure most people didnt even get to the part of the intverview where he gets political. (i know i didnt)
The last bit made me cry. HE is thanking US for giving this opportunity to HIM, when he has given so much to US. His music has been my best friend at times. It has kept me alive in the darkest times because I didn't feel alone listening to what he was able to articulate. I hope he knows how much what he does matters, and how grateful I am for it.
Last night I had this weird dream... In my dream I heard Radiohead play a new song that I have never heard before... It was absolutely amazing... And had such a beautiful melody. I connected to it on a deep personal level. Afterwards I met Thom and almost speechless said "Thank you for everything"... It was a very emotional and weird dream... In real life I was dancing around on the living room floor the other day with my 3 year old daughter listening to "Lift" from MD 126 ....
I mean... we pay his bills, lotta people goin hungry out there. Not saying he's not talented, but he should be thanking us. He has a fantastic life while most of the world is in poverty. That's a gift regardless of how talented you are. Lotta talented people in poverty and never gonna make it too. Thom prolly realizes that.
And in the beginning, he says something about how "people may emotionally connect with the music I've BEEN INVOLVED IN". Looks like he never even admits that he has actually written it, that it was him who created it in the first place... Amazing!
@smashingairguitars ...although being unfortunate enough to observe those absolutely frightful 😱 shiny black PVC trousers he's apparently chosen to wear of his own accord, one must surely put a question mark on the apparent balanced good mental state of awareness. I Mean, would you be seen dead in those things? I'm sure I wouldn't! 🎩
@@battousai9795 yes we are. one shitty accidend in your that will make you depressed and it stays till the rest of your life. youre just young. you will understand. even the happiest people have ups and downs
@@ImotekhtheStormlord-tx2it Oh, you're an edgy one, aren't you? What about the fact that most people don't get into a "horrible accident that makes them depressed" ? Or what about the people that get into one but don't let it being them down? I know of people that have lost a leg or have lost the ability to walk and they still have a positive outlook on life, perhaps even more positive than mine. And please learn to understand what you're reading, I never said that happy people don't have ups and downs, I don't even know what's that got to do with anything, I just said that not every human is anxious and miserable. It's one thing to say that people aren't happy all the time, and something completely different to mindlessly state that every human is anxious and miserable.
@@battousai9795 I think it's more appropriate to suggest that everyone suffers from periods of anxiety and depression, even someone as cheerful as myself has felt it and it's never been an issue with me. You always think it won't be you until it is. But it's not a bad thing, it pushes us to grow and learn new things.
It's no mystery why Thom is more open and relaxed here. It's the interviewer. Zane is chill, down to earth, present, active listening, and wants to discuss genuinely interesting things. Thom gets scripted stock questions, barely-there interviewers, and star-struck sit-downs constantly. It's boring and exhausting for brains like his. He must be thrilled on the rare day it's not one of those.
yeah people used to give zane a lot of stick back in his heyday (when he was probably inadvisedly trying to take influence from us hip hop djs) but he was always a genuinely great interviewer
Thom Yorke seems like he's doing really well emotionally and mentally. So smiley, high-fiving the interviewer, laughing. It makes me happy to see him happy.
He's not a typical looking dude but he not a typical person. He's enormously talented and hard working. Not many bands / people remain as creative and their output that consistency good and interesting.
Me too! He has a very soothing, melodic speaking voice. I notice most great singers with pretty tones speak in a kind of gentle sing-songy way... I don't know if that's the right word but that's what I hear lol
14:40 "I think most artists if they're honest, they're never solo artists" ~Thom Kinda hits home. I've tried to put together so many bands to make music, try something new, not play alone, but a lot of them either wanted to do their own thing, wanted to just party, or weren't really committed (or all 3). There's magic in playing with a band. It has to vibe. It's a relationship and bands fall apart if there's toxic musicians (like playing over other people, not tuning together, or showing up to practice, not practicing, etc). Just like relationships it takes work and effort from everyone which is why it's more honest because when the synergy stops so does the band.
While I agree with what you say about importance of a good band dynamic, I think what Thom meant was, any artist representing themselves as a solo artist, is never truly a solo artist. Theres always someone you've bounced ideas off of or that have suggested ideas to you in the creating process. theres engineers and mastering wizards who are always helping you with the stuff you can't figure out. hell even if you work in complete isolation, the world around you is your feedback loop.
this one hits hard. Im currently trying to make bands and both of them dont seem to work the way i want in one of them we just dont know what to play and have some sort of seperate music taste even though we still share bunch of stuff in common and pretty good skills in the other we just always take photos and stuff but besides one song we barely play anything and one member doesn't know how to play anything sorry for the dump btw
@@BlastkinTry and combine your styles in a way which works, but don't force it, for the second band... I'd say start playing and ignore what you look like if you can't play, if you want to be musicians and not models or some other aesthetically motivated cooperation
It is good to see how someon who made such a beautifully gloomy and depressing album like A moon shaped pool can be, at the same time so happy and energetic. I love you, Thom. Please keep making this world a better place to stay with your music.
“Music I’ve been involved in” I love Thoms undeniable humility. Even now after a successful ongoing career, and being deemed as one of musics greatest he still comes across so unwilling to allow himself to believe he’s better than anyone else which for me, makes him a role model.
Where normal interviews start with: How's the tour going? This one just starts with two kinds of sleep and the health benefits of napping and Siestas in Southern European countries. I love it.
I admire Zane so much, his interviews really show another face of artists and he's not afraid to come off as a fanboy because he's really interested and respectful of the artist's work.
When you watch to interviews from the post Ok Computer/Kid A era, he looks tired, stressed out and fed up. Now he looks so different, like he is enjoying his life again and in one word, happy.
Zane: "Writers' block must be hell..." Thom: silent disagreement Zane: "... but I think sometimes it must be a relief" Thom: "Yeah, it really is! And ..." That's a good interviewing technique. Say something, and if they don't seem to agree with it, say "but, actually, the opposite!"
"When an artist repeats themselves because they think that's what people want, they're fucked" - Thom Yorke. This is why I fucking love Thom, and Radiohead. Keep moving forward, always.
What a great interview! More of a conversation than an interview, which I think is the way it should be. Very deep, calm, thoughtful and relaxed. Thanks a bunch :-)
This is one of the best interviews I've seen - He refers to his music as sad, He's humble - Radiohead is working on a higher consciousness. Cheers Zane, super enjoyed.
In a world that slaps "genius" badges onto anyone that can hold a guitar, it's sobering to see a true artist speak. Not many people have the power to move me to tears through the sheer beauty of his lyrics and music. Thom is one.
I fucking love Thom, not just his work but who he is as a person. He's just real, he has no mask or facade to show off for a camera like most artists do. How Zane was talking about connecting through artists through there music is pretty much a personal experience. I've been a huge Radiohead since I was around 15 and they've been the only band that have made the biggest impression on me. I'm glad Thom is doing well, he's been through a lot in the last few years. Watching this interview was like seeing an old friend again.
I was 16 when kid a came out. It's difficult to describe just how much me and my friends loved radiohead and how much they meant to us. They drew me right in and touched me so deeply emotionally.
I haven’t remembered my dream since I was a little, and it’s been bugging me so much. Well, I watched the anima short film on Netflix the other night, and then had my first dream in a long time... and thom Yorke was in it! It’s like he cast a spell on me. I can’t stop thinking about it.
I had 3 beautiful Bowie dreams leading up to his death. The last one was on the Friday, two days before he died. I also told my better half that Bowie would die soon that day. Weirded me out for quite a while.
This is thee greatest part of “age” - when these phenomenal artists are finally comfortable in their own skin- beyond caring about judgement of anything else for that matter, and opening their heart to this wealth of wisdom...to share with all of their admirers. If one thinks about it...their words, while innocently spoken in an interview- are just as powerful yet in a different way...as their music. In a completely different mental aspect. Their music is beyond words, and then we get this fantastic, cerebral endorphin jolt. So strange if thought about past a topical level, because it’s really a direct raw access that we are being privileged to, which is exactly what and how they go through the steps of their artistic masterpieces- and in this case since Thom has had various experiences, we get to hear about more than just I’m sure, what a lot of us weren’t expecting. This interview was like getting a bunch of gifted Easter Eggs. Essentially, we’re given a pass to that little bit of understanding how they do it; their thought-process behind it. I dig on listening how *age sorta forces it’s way into these workaholic types (artists exclusive), and how when they actually ‘stop to smell the flowers’, when an unexpected influence in their life yanks their brains interest just long enough to have them explore what just happened (as he’s exposing his new-found interest of the power of ‘sleep’ in its entirety, on a beneficial level). These types of interviewers who’s own genuine interest and admiration is able to scratch past the surface of their “job” strictly by causing, again, a more *raw “human connection”. Splendid interview.❤️ Thom was amazing and gracious with his going beyond, deep and personal, in his answering. Thank you gentlemen.☺️✌️
It's a pleasure to hear Thom Yorke speak. I like Radiohead's music, I met them when I was 12 when I bought OK Computer in 1997 with my own money. In my opinion they are the best band from the last 25 years to the day
This makes me so happy to listen to Thom laugh...he seems to be in a good place these days! Back in the 90s his seeming endless misery had me worried we might have another Cobain on our hands. Thanks Thom, you'll never know how much you've meant to my life :)
I'm watching this again.......for probably the 5th time. And it just makes me wish Thom did more interviews. Seriously. He's SUCH a smart humble cool creative awesome human being. I just adore him to a ridiculous degree. This interview is perfect. I'd love to see more stuff like this....
I love seeing genius musicians aging well and not clinging to old patterns. its a cliche to have brilliant stars burn out and die young but in such much of the world music the masters are over 35. its like you aint shit until you've lived enough to know what the blues are about. its good to know that people like Thom are out there still carrying the torch and lighting the way with their wisdom.
Fascinating to hear Thom so grounded, present, & genuine. An artist of alien genius who reveals himself to be a humble creative who works extraordinarily hard to construct work of alien genius.
I have been a Radiohead fan for many years and I feel this is the best interview that Thom Yorke has ever shared. Former interviews helped quenching the thirst of connection that his fans needed, but they often felt strained and painful. This is what appears be an off the cuff, spontaneous interview that is so, so refreshing for real Radiohead fans. Like most fans I had resigned myself to the impossibility to feel a real connection with the real people who were creating this incredible, sometimes life changing music. There was often the feeling that Thom Yorke had some atavic fear or shyness of being himself when projecting to the public. Nearly a fear of identifying himself with his music and reluctance to accept the fact it was so resonant to so many people. I know there is no duty from any artist to share the process of creation, to share the doubts and the agonies of delving inside yourself and projecting through an art medium. However, I felt there was always something missing: a lack of acknowledgement of a mutual sharing of emotions and dismay and anguish. And hope as well. This is a new Thom Yorke, who sounds comfortable in his own skin and does not wish to run away from the millions of people he has so greatly affected through his music. It may be age related, but it is a truly nice development. Thank you!
Great chat. Thom's such a down-to-earth, humble bloke. Zane has always been a good interviewer. Wasn't planning on watching the whole 38 minutes but it was great to listen to. Like what Thom said about how hard it is to "get people angry" (about issues) "you can get them worried, but not angry (enough) " s what he means. Very insightful bloke with depth and a genius musical soul.
Im so happy I live in a time where Thom Yorke makes music. He will never know the things he's done for people and the lives he has touched. Thank you Thom.
Yes! It's FABULOUS. So interesting, and the health implications of poor sleep are staggering. Do check out the author's podcast with Joe Rogan. Very entertaining.
I was going to criticise Zane Lowe for being completely in awe of Thom but then I realised if it was me interviewing Thom, I would be an incomprehensible mess
Adversarial interviews are only a good thing when confronting phoneys deceptive people about their bad behavior, it is EXTREMELY detrimental when used to force an honest person. In this case I'm pretty sure he would have just walked out or shut off any real dialogue. I have severe PTSD, anyone who would try that shit with me would get a knuckle sandwich, but if you are just asking me the truth without malice I will give it all freely, even if I murdered all the good people in the world.
Lovely to see Thom so open to talk these days. I want to start something creative for myself to understand the emotions Thom goes through with his work, must be a feeling like no other.
That ended on such a beautiful note. Wonderful interview. And all the talk about going through the Kid A/Amnesiac archives!!!! I really hope that they release something for the anniversary like they did with OKNOTOK.
What a great interview, err, I mean discussion. Just brilliant. The opportunity to speak with Thom in this relaxed laid back format. Once in a lifetime and we're all lucky to have a chance to listen in. THANK YOU!!
Fuuuuuck! I remember seeing “Radiohead” at a free show in San Francisco in 1993! I put quotes around it, because for whatever reason (I’m guessing hangover, or jet lag, or both) the band never showed. It was just Thom all by himself with an acoustic guitar. Great set!
Same. I had followed them since Pablo, and OK was my first tour, but Kid A was like seeing them become more of themselves. I'll never forget getting that album and hearing it. Mind blown and music altered forever.
Holy shit! One of the best interviews ever, sort of a meta-interview but incredibly insightful of both participants. I want to see more from this guy. And Thom Yorke.
This was a fantastic interview. I think I learned more about Thom both as an artist and as a person from watching this than I have from any other interview. And of all of the great information he shared here about his experiences creating and performing, what brought me the most joy was what he said at the very end about his happiness and gratitide for his life situation. I love it!
Thom seems to let his walls down for this interview, whereas in the past he was understandably very protective. I don't know if experience, being a parent, or overcoming pain has made him more trustful of people. But it's nice to see that he's more ok with talking openly these days. Not oversharing but not overly suspicious of anyone either.
Thom Yorke gives us all a bit of his life force with every note. Humbling that such genius exists, but even more humbling it is given freely to us. His very essence is Art. His very existence is music.
How can I possibly tell Thom York and Radiohead how they have changed my life since 1997...... Does he read these? Probs not..... Him and Billy Corgan have touched my soul. Musical geniuses that r sent by angels to make us look into ourselves..... look at the deepest past of our emotions and so much more. The world would be at such a loss without u. xoxo Also i saw Jonny front row and centre at the ACC for kid A and he is amazing ....
A very beautiful and inspiring interview from Thom. I truly enjoyed the album, *ANIMA* and all its meaning and beauty with its dreamy dystopian-esque sounds that are enlightening. “Dawn Chorus,” is absolutely beautiful and during times like these, we really need artist like Thom to awaken people. A very inspiring artist. Thank you our One Eye King. Thank you for the full interview XL recordings. 🙏🏻
I almost cried with this amazing interview. Zane Lowe was so excited and did an amazing interview. What I love about Thom Yorke is the fact that he ALWAYS makes me say "WOW"
For someone who has also been bullied and suffered anxiety and panic, he is great inspiration. I find it comforting he is this relaxed now. Getting there.
