From a C-Span interview (1995), Dr. Sowell explains the mindset of ruling class elitists as he discusses his book, “The Vision of the Anointed.” www.LibertyPen.com
George Hancock Tbh it probably wasn’t efficient back in ‘95. Either way, the best way to do something will always rise up unless the government stops it.
I bought the book a few months ago. After reading it, I can't help but cringe and cynically frown when I hear intellectuals and politicians spin their tales and promote crisis to further their own agendas. And being praised for it nonetheless.
“The institute will preserve the problem to which they are the solution” Shirky Principle. Thomas Sowell is a national treasure and should be compulsory in all educational institutions.
Brian Morgan ahhh yes we need more ‘compassionate’ people to give us more lovely programmes like minimum wage, the welfare state and affirmative action. I’d take cold talking facts anyway over the lovely compassionate anointed who take from one to give to another whilst taking a little something for themselves.
"I happen to be one of the few people in the country who is not an expert on welfare." What a great line. As soon as I heard it, I was immediately embarrassed for every half-assed opinion I hold (dear).
Jason Berk UBI is generally better than welfare though cause it frees people to make more than a welfare cap and they don’t have to waste time proving they are looking for a job
Here in Red Deer AB Canada we have been recycling for 6yrs now, the Municipal Government just announced that less than 5% of the material collected as Recyclables has in fact been recycled. Only some cardboard and some glass/plastic....95% goes to Landfill.
@@tommyodonovan3883 My county decided to use crushed glass rather than mining and crushing shale rock for the landfill layers … We will see how that works out. Glass companies that take recycled glass ("cullet") from the public only want clear, clean glass. Only a percentage of new bottles, (etc.) are made from the recycled glass.*** ***Recycled glass, like recycled plastic is more ... brittle than new ("virgin") glass and plastic
I think we should recycle aluminum and plastic by melting it down into huge blocks. We could then stack them as walls on the Mexican border. When it gets too tall to climb over and people complain, we can just say it's not our fault. We were just trying to save the planet.
Just finished this book last month. It's truly a breath of fresh air for anyone who dares to pay attention to the world around them. His book Intellectuals and Society is just as fascinating.
This is a direct result of the deindustrialization of America There was a time when most people worked regular (e.g. 9-5) hours/shifts and those who owned businesses participated in local politics. Now, those people work for others.
I read this book in '95. It had a profound effect on my thinking, and has since galvanized my view of messianic government being a hindrance to any real progress towards the problems we face.
US CRIMINALS use of gun's knives whatever weapons in all US INNER-CITIES alone have possibly killed more people over the past 50, 60 yrs than US soldiers K.I.A., M.I.A. Korea, Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan, Somalia, Panama, Garanada.
I never miss a chance to listen to or read something by Dr. Sowell. The funny thing is that as I write this there are 211 "thumbs-up" and 5 "thumbs-down" votes. However, there is not one negative comment, as you cannot argue with genius.
Interviewer asks: “What sparked this particular book for you?” Sowell: “I guess, in a sense getting tired of arguing the same arguments in different guises over and over on issue after issue and realizing there’s a certain underlying pattern of beliefs, assumptions about the world, about people and that what we really need to do is look at those assumptions and the kind of conclusions they lead to - and more than that, the the extent to which that mindset is resist to empirical evidence.”
I enjoy watching old interviews like this, or the old Firing Line ones . We're definitely getting dumber. Can't imagine how stupid we'll be in another generation or 2.
Left leaning people are great at thinking outside the box and tend to be highly imaginative and creative. They're usually interested in novel ideas and often legitimately do want to improve the world. However, trial and error and experimentation is very much a part of the process for bringing about positive change. People with left leaning temperaments then are well suited for careers in science, the arts and entrepreneurship where experimentation can be done in controlled settings because frankly, most experiments will fail. The advantage to society is that the person doing the experiment and their backers are the ones who take the risks and bear the costs of their failures. There is no real lost to society when they don't get it right (at least in past times when science wasn't funded by taxes). The benefits for those doing the experiments can be huge when they do get it right so this gives them an incentive to keep trying but also not to waste time and resources on self indulgent pursuits that are of little interest to the greater society. Unfortunately, a lot of left leaning people are drawn to the humanities and then politics. Here, there is no lab in which to test their ideas so they have to run their experiments in the real world. That means humanity has to bear the costs for their social policies and bad ideas; and their ideas are almost always bad. The classical liberal era was a golden age for political thought and modern libertarianism has sought to improve upon those ideas. Government is best that governs least. Let people experiment in their every days lives but let them pay the costs for the mistakes and reap the rewards for their successes. We all benefit from those successes so if those who bring them about receive greater rewards, so be it.
B T I get what you’re saying, why do people in these comment sections insist on beginning their statements with “I am a white woman from Canada” or I am a black man from____.? What is this 1973? The last part of that comment tells us enough, he is a remarkable and inspiring man. Does stating your race in the beginning somehow validate it even more or am I missing something here.
I want to thank the owner of this channel. If it wasn't for you, I never would have been a fan of Thomas Sowell. It feels good to listen to a normal sane person.
I love Brian Lamb's interviews, but I don't know how he didn't laugh at Sowell's joke at 3:26. Also, that recycling stooge that Sowell laughed at probably is an alderman now since he believes everything the hivemind tells him.
If Larry elder is my political father then Thomas Sowell is my political grandfather. Richard Dawkins is my mom n Christopher Hitchens is my grandmother.
Absolutely love one of our national treasures, Thomas Sowell. But there’s a free market argument for everything, even for environmentalism. I’m NOT a proponent of FORCED recycling, but if you want to recycle, it has some benefits that free communication allows us to explore WITHOUT the force of government. It’s very likely there is less going into landfills (which I’m not saying are overflowing, because we have plenty of room), and the reason is because of capitalism! Look at many carpet and building materials today and you are looking at something that’s been recycled into something else. I think that’s great, if an entrepreneur can take a plastic bottle and make it into carpet, tile, or deck boards! And there are many other win-win examples! Always direct the argument into how the free market can do it better. That’s what Dr. Sowell has taught me.
matsfreedom, I’m not advocating ANY subsidization! It should be completely voluntary and paid for by the people who want to do it or use the recyclables. We pay for it in our water/sewer utility bill.
In 200 years, there will be but a handful of people living today who will be either still talked or written about, or remotely relevant in whatever world that exists. Tom Sowell will be one of those people. Allow that to sink in 🤔
Thomas Sowell really is the best. Unfortunately he does not realize that many of these politicians are rank amateurs who just stepped up because of the pay and The Prestige. When he does not understand is that he has much more than what it really takes to be a good president. I would vote for him even if he were 90.
Mr. Sowell is a great American Treasure. Never have I've listened to anyone say so much in fact, using so few words. I highly recommend reading this book. He taught me how to use listening to avoid anointed insanity. They are completely allergic to facts. Avoidance of their opinion from the start is the best strategy to use against them. Do not engage with the anointed, it's useless.
I think we should recycle aluminum and plastic by melting it down into huge blocks. We could then stack them as walls on the Mexican border. When it gets too tall to climb over and people complain, we can just say it's not our fault. We were just trying to save the planet.
In case anyone is wondering where the theme tune of this TV series originated from: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-vO_j5R3BKJ4.html and live, ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-d9gCN9-Jnfg.html. I was a big fan of Pentangle in the UK, back in the day.
I agree with all....but If we don't recycle then what we will do with all that waste? What that aluminium chair will do .... It will stay there in land fill....I mean if recycling is not the viable Idea then what else is???? Does anyone has the answer?
Wow he was saying this back in the 90's his diversity amongst liberal college and how you can tell the culture of the school by how the student sit and interact is spot on.
I can't believe I'm taking issue with Dr. Sowell, but he's misguided about aluminum. It's true there's a crap-ton of it in the Earth's crust, but it takes *enormous* energy to refine it down to the metal we use, which is why aluminum is so readily and economically recyclable; this is a real deal factor that doesn't apply to really any other item in the waste stream. Other than that, he's still my hero; Conflict of Visions changed my life.
