yes it would. by lowering the current the magnetic field does not induce as large a current in the ring, and the field that pushes on the induced current is smaller as well. Just turn the current down so the ring does not clear the top of the core.

Not quite, this device works on something called the Lorentz force. When oriented properly, magnetic fields exert a force on electric currents. In this case, an alternating magnetic field induces a current in the aluminum ring due to Faraday's law, this same field exerts a force on the current it just induced propelling the ring upward. Because of this, the ring may be made out of any conducting material, the better the conductor, the greater distance upward it travels.
