I had this knife at a very Yong age, not sure where mine is today, probably in my childhood home in Norway. I bought one for my American boy last time I was in Norway. I am 1/2 Sami, so this is my heritage.
I own a pair of Stromeng knives. An 8' & a 3.5" that share a piggy back scabbard. (I think that's the measurements) I bought then in Karaskok Norway in 1989! In that 31 years I've thrown them a few times, chopped wood, cut rope, used the bigger knife for batoning wood, etc. They have never failed & hold a good ever for a long time! They are wonderful in my opinion. Certainly everyone's going to have their opinions and this style of knife isn't ideal for everyone, I think most would agree after using them that they are a good design.
I sounds like what I have put mine through LOL, and yes not every knife for every body, but the shape/style of these puuko have been testet out by outdoor people i scandinavia for cent.
I love these Knivsmed Stromeng Leukus! I have a 9” one but I don’t like how it slightly curves down in the last 1/3 of the blade, where it widens-looks too “kukri” or bolo like. I prefer the 8” model like yours and mine is an old beaten up one that I purchased from a guy in Poland on eBay. The sheath is soggy and floppy because it’s been soaked in Ballistol and the back was nicked and chipped so bad I had to file and sand it smooth, otherwise it’s just fine. I sharpened it and it feels wonderful in the hand, even that old varnish is still there and feels surprisingly good
I just received my 8'' KS8 Old Fashioned I bought mine from Ragweed Forge out of NY it cost just 135.00 USD so I really loved your video I also plan on doing a video review. I have never done this before so it may take awhile. Cheers have a good one.
Sa heah Thor, WoW, you answered a serious question on my Stromeng KS-9, and that is the strength of it when batoning. Super, I didn't think it was that strong. It's not the strongest when batoning. Some of these are brittle and can snap in half if the heat treatment isn't perfect. The handle can also work itself lose when batoning. A small buck nighthawk is stronger for batoning. Check what the nighthawk can do on knife destruction videos on RU-vid. It goes far beyond the capabilities of this sami knife when it comes to batoning and durability. The original sami knives are handmade. This is is not. The blade are not handmade from leafspring like antique sami knives.
Say Heah, Not tooong ago, Oh, maybe 3 years ago, I found out that there was a Leuku, So I researched it. I found out that Lars Munson crossed Canada, using his Stromeng KS-9 as his main knife. I was impressed. So yeah, I got one. I also got the KS-5, and the Bhuku STAK. The smaller knives are both in the 12c27 Stainless. Yeah, that KS-9 I teamed with my Bhuku STAK, A lovely piece of kit. I have one of the Norwegian Army versions with cross-guard by a Stromeng, superb knife. Is it true that the Sami knife and thus the Stromeng are heat treated and steel type chosen to be able to deal with very low temperatures below zero and to chop frozen hard wood without chipping, as well as more temperate levels, which seems logical given the range of temperatures in the north where those very enduring, hardy people range. Love my Strømeng knives, only miss a few sizes now :) I know this video is some years old by now but you asked for suggestions for Scandinavian knifes. I would suggest a few Knifes from Helle (Norway) maybe the Utvær designed by the very famous Danish knife maker and designer Jesper Voxnæs. And maybe something like the Jegermester or something like that. Take a look on their site now that they got a brand new website/shop and see what you like. Greetings from Norway.
Uhhh Helle I have some of their knifes including a brand new out of the box (King of knifes) but I cant get my selv to use it in a test. maybe ill show it if I do a Helle knife. im not sure which knife to test. Helle dose not want to come with input, du you have a knife you think I should try?
@@Thoristesting Sure thing. I got some suggestions on some stick/rat tang knifes from them. Shouldn't be a issue as long as their limitations are respected ,they should last a long time if one take care of them. Some should even manage to do some light battonin for kindling. It should also be noted that they use a few different steels: Their own Triple laminated Stainless steel (bit more flexible),12c27,laminated carbon, Carbon. Fulltang Recommendations: Utvær, Temagami CA, Didi Galgalu. Stick tang recommendation: Jegermester, Sylvsteinen, Harding, Arv, Gaupe, Viking, Saga Siglar (slightly smaller blade than Viking), Gro, Nying.
Reminds me of "Brusletto Villmann."..Always wanted one but discontinued by time I noticed them. Yours seems well built... What a nice rig,you guys know how to set up nice for afield over there. My grandmother worked for Sandvik factory and got me always watching what you guys are using abroad. The Shape of the Ferrule is perfectly fit it seems.. I always fret blood getting into protected area so when those are built exact,What a nice rig.. I have nice piece of 5160 leaf spring,might make me one this winter.. Do they still make this model you have? I watched "Wild Woman Bushcraft" and seen the Brusletto style years back as she used for lite batoning and such, but this you have is much more Robust.. Seems the ferrule has only hole for rattail and face of ferrule is grooved for hind of blade to counter sink inward...Wow,I like that knife... Carbon? do you know what steel?
I like your testing of this knife. Thank you for that. Please consider testing Helle knives like the GT and Sylvsteinen and WoodsKnife like the WK-Metsä and Samekniv 5 or larger
Hallo Ad thx. a lot, Uhh I love Helle knifes, but have not been able to talk to them yet, they have just had new adm.. dicretor, and maybe there. I have my own Dyre Vaa "king of knifes" but that is a collecter item and have never been used, Ill take it with me and show when I get to test Helle :)
Hi Sean, thx. about Carbon, i think the most importen is to keep you blade dry, always wipe it after using, and when I store it I use a little miniral oile (you know a hobby olie, many also uses food oil like olive olie)
Thank you, Thor. I always like to hear what others are using for carbon in this regard. I agree with you about mineral oil, I even carry a small supply with me in the field to take care of my tools. Using mineral oil there is also no build up of sticky residue that unrefined organic oils such as olive oil leave on the blade and possibly turn rancid over time. Steve Strømeng says they use CRC 5-56 at the shop in Karasjok but it is not ideal because it is not food safe, however, I think it is appropriate for shipping where the blades will be without treatment for months in varying conditions. Aside from the blade needing attention in this way, these knives are BEASTS! I love all my Scandinavian tools, Helle and Gränsfors Bruk, but the feeling I get from using the Strømeng Samekniv is almost spiritual. It is a close and trusted companion. Hi Vincent, Hmmm well, this blade is not hard to take care of, be sure to wipe it when you are done, more if you have used it for fruit or tree with natural aicet. when u dont use it for a wile, give it some oil, but only natual oil if you use3 it for food :)
You can leave it alone while cutting fruits, vegetables, bacon etc. Doing so will put a beautiful patina on carbon steel. It's rust which you must watch for, and you avoid rust by keeping water off the blade. Don't put it in a wet sheath, don't leave it outside, always dry it off after cutting something wet.

Don’t baton the knife. It has a Woden handle. I’m cringing. It’s a decent chopper. Don’t hammer it through wood or whatever. Get a blooming axe for Christ sakes. People never did hammer knives trough wood before. Really on rear occasions. Now it’s something people do all the time apparently. Just get some real hands on experience, bloody hippies. Don’t just look at these kinda vids and think this is how you should go about business. Use your head
Batoning is stupid! Get a saw or axe. A knife is a knife: Even the Sami dont do so what youre doing! Beside my Strömeng KS9 I prefer to use my Helle „Lappland“: the Helle Quality is way better than Strömeng!
