I think with Love and Thunder in comparison to Ragnarok, LaT's problem is that the comedy and drama both go harder than Ragnarok and it makes the mood whiplash worse. Ragnarok was swapping between comedy and a standard save the world plotline. LaT was firing off jokes like a gatling gun and then swapped to talking about cancer patients and a mass child kidnapping.
Biggest issues I had with the movie: 1. They pulled a dragonball super move similar to goku with Thor. Made him dumber for the sake of being funny when in the past iterations of the character weren’t nearly close to that, or at least there was a balance previously. 2. Gorr has no time to show his level of threat to our hero’s, he’s said to be killing gods like wildfire but we never actually get to see how much of a threat he is. I really wish we would have seen a mini compilation of him taking out gods and at least asking for info about storm breaker/Thor and the bifrost (Since he needed it) 3. The movie had no idea what it wanted to commit to and be. The main thing was the dumb rom com aspect of the movie which just NEVER stopped, like it was painful because it felt like no one in the film took anything seriously.
I don't agree that it wasn't set up that Thor wanted a kid. In the montage where we see Thor and Jane's domestic relationship before they start building walls between each other, there is a scene where he's staring wistfully at a parent and child
its nice you think either of these genocidal assholes are "not psychopaths". at least in the comics he is not pressumed to be right and we see more of his struggle.
We've established in both black panther and moon night and now Thor that an afterlife or different afterlife exist so why is it weird that Natalie Portman ended up in valhalla?
Honestly Jane IS worthy. Not because she wanted Mjolnir solely to heal herself, but to continue helping humanity. They said this in the movie! AND even though she was told that the transformations were actually killing her she STILL was willing to make that sacrifice to save innocent lives. If that isn’t being worthy of having the power of Thor than no one deserves that power. Also as the son of a mother who fought stage 3A breast cancer I can tell you that you have to have a truly strong will to beat cancer. Though I do really wish we had gotten more time with Gorr. Not only to get to know him better as a character but also as a true threat to ALL the gods. He’s not called The God Butcher just because he kills gods, in the comics he literally displays some of their bodies on meat hooks and chops some of them to pieces like raw meat. That said I actually do love this look as much as his look in the comics. He looks like a monk turned into a vengeful wraith.
everybody in the mcu wants to help humanity, even most of the villains. and some of them make more meaningfull sacrafises to do it. by that logic thanos was more worthy.

Our idea of improving this movie, give it a focus on "being worthy." Gorr believes the Gods are not worthy of being worshipped. Having Jane prove she is worthy of mjolnir and acting like what a God should be doing in the battles by protecting the people. Thor being lost and aimless causing damage with his actions because he doesn't consider the consequences for them anymore. A proper and focused theme aside from "comedy-adventure" would have really helped the movie
the issue with that is actually writting that properly would lead to a bottomless hole off theological arguments these hacks would never be abble to pull off
It wasn’t bad, it wasn’t good it’s just okay and that’s fine. I think maybe adding an extra 20-25 minutes to the movie to fill in some parts would have helped. I didn’t like the goats for one reason, I laughed on why and how he got them but they just really overdid the “they are loud” Joke
I really have to disagree with the idea that he was brought back to Thor 1 levels. In the first movie he's dumb but only in that he isn't self aware enough to see what makes a good son, friend, or ruler. I think the issue is that his character has been stagnant since Endgame and he becomes stupid in a more traditional sense as a coping mechanism yet never moves past it when the trauma is resolved. This movie feels like filler because Thor never really gets a chance to change as a character or even really reflect on why he is this way now.
I'm surprised people don't see the growth. I guess it's less obvious than "You're not the god of hammers", but I did feel it was clear that Thor at the beginning of this film would have never taken on a child. He's always kept people at arm's length and the love he feels for Jane is what makes him abandon that fear of loss for a real connection.
I think taiko and the studio ruined the movie cause in the comics the gor the God butcher comic woth Thor and Jane are awesome and make sense and meaning. The problem is the studio taking some stuff from the comics but not implementing them well like you guys say they ruin thors and Jane's character and like we say in comics no one dies, so Jane coming back happens at some point, but this isn't comics it's mcu which is fine but make it better
Its been an element of contention that superhero comics (marvel/dc) have this penchant of "resetting" character arcs, So its unfortunate that it also repeats in the movies. When an instance of a character goes on for more than 3 movies, its either that they tonally reset the character if they develop too far forward, or that they just reboot the whole superhero franchise.
Agreed on most of these points, except the most confusing thing was actually, when the movie ended and I got up to leave, the audience was applauding. I was SO confused like, "Are y'all serious?"
I didn't watch the movie and I probably won't, unless it goes to Disney+ for free or something. Ever since Endgame I've been getting tired of Marvel. That should've been the end, in my opinion. While I've liked some of these movies, like Spiderman Far from Home and Shang Chi, I'm getting kind of tired of the Universe and how everything has to be connected in some way to build up for some big team-up movie in the end. Like, why can't they just be their own thing, without the need to crossover with all these properties? They all end in the same way too, some space portal thingy is destroying everything and the heroes come to save the day, I'm sick of that. Same goes with DC/WB, except when they do it, it ends up being worse.
Yet again the best villains are hardly used properly. Thor turned into another comedic relief. The cgi was pretty bad. Ragnarok was better and honestly even the dark world was. Enough with the quipping fest marvel.
This movie literally lacks an act 2 honestly. Feels like solely the scene with the gods acts like one, but it only takes like 20 minutes and then everyone immediately jumps over to save the kids. Most of the story arcs just start and finish with little buildup, definitely studio interference, especially when they had like 2x the material filmed.
"Thor: Love and Thunder" felt like a 2-hour long SNL skit. 5 minutes in, I was like "WTH is going on?" and it just kept bouncing from one thing to another. The acting as well was cheezy compared to the previous 3. I then looked up who wrote "Ragnorok", and Taika had no involvement in that, but did for "LOve and Thunder" and the contrast is very obvious that he infused his humour and style into this felt very out of place.
Could not stomach Anchorman. I came to realize people are expecting too much at this point, not sure why they need to reinvent the wheel when Thor 1 and 2 were more serious and they didn't appear to work Simmons is the voice of reason, the movie was good but it gas its problems
Wow I never met a review I totally agree and had the same insight. Usually I disagree one or 2 things but man spot on and I this is now the worse Thor and Marvel Movie I have watched.
Idk, I think you guys obviously weren't satisfied but i don't think it's a bad movie. Is it a masterpiece? No, but its a funny little adventure. The comedy was pretty good, some of the visual gags were great, and some of the smaller characters were definitely enjoyable. I wouldn't rank it as the upper echelon of MCU films but its a solid 6-7
I feel like complaints about tone and Thor's personality are more people tired with the MCU than this movie itself. Thor has pretty consistently been dumb, this movie just makes the setting more serious. Like in Infinity War he's calling the Guardians "Morons" because he doesn't understand that Rocket is insulting them. He also tries to steal their ship by guessing birthdays on the ship's keypad. This is in the film that people praise Thor's characterization. And maybe it comes down to personal taste, but I vastly preferred Gorr over Hel. I didn't really get much out of her scenes in Ragnarok, it always felt like we were pausing the fun of the film to go back to her scenes, which were just as much of a tonal shift as this one's.
While Gorr is easily one of the best bits of the film and Christian Bale gives a great performance, I feel like he's the main reason this film is so bad with tonal whiplash in comparison to Ragnarok. Like, Hel's scenes where more serious, but at the end of her day she was still a generic doomsday villain with an actress who was clearly having a blast playing her. Gorr feels like he came from a slasher movie while everyone else was making a rom com.
@@skyblade7438 I guess I understand that. It didn't really mess with my enjoyment though since it mostly felt like it was kept separate. For me tonality becomes a problem when it's inconsistent. Hela is going back and forth for the whole film. So she's never quite serious enough to be scary and never quite funny enough to get a big laugh. Bale plays 100% creepy the whole film. The only tone issue I hated was the "hero comeback" that they have to have in all of these now with the "bad breath" comment. It feels too much like high school dungeons and dragons.
the first issue is taking a story like ragnarok or god of war 3 and turning it into a comedy. its understandable adding hummor, but not turning it into a kids comedy movie.
The MCU in my mind ended after Endgame. No Way Home was great, but everything else in Phase 4 has been shit, especially Multiverse of Madness fuck that movie.
Having just watched the film myself I can honestly say I enjoyed it more than Ragnarok. Maybe I’m crazy but half the criticism I’m hearing about this film are things that were in Ragnarok. The difference for me is that TLA actually had emotional depth for Thor that didn’t immediately get ruined by comedic nonsense. The villain wasn’t completely removed the A plot for the entirety of the 2nd act, and they were actually given legitimate reasoning for the choices from beginning to end. At the end of the film I felt like Thor, Jane and Gorr all had satisfying conclusions. It’s just so weird that people thought was too much silliness when the previous film had a bunch nonsense throughout the entirety of it. For Christ sake all three of Thor’s closest friends get killed and he doesn’t find out about it get to mourn them because we really need to see how absurd Jeff Goldblum is for the next 20 minutes. Oh yea and his father just died not even a day ago but don’t worry about that because the Hulk’s randomly on the exact same planet as a gladiator in fixed matches. The fight scenes in TLA are better, Thors actually allowed to show off his abilities in this film. The relationship stuff between Thor and Jane is all building towards the ending. Thor was actually able to find closure and move forward. In Ragnarok is was ready to be a King, Infinity War made him feel like a failure, Endgame gave him redemption and now he has closure. Again I might be crazy but some of this stuff just feels like people view pre-phase 4 stuff with rose tinted glasses.
This is the first I have to disagree with you guys on this you guys came off way to critical on this one. The movie was fun and entertaining for what it was but I will say seems like there is no finishing line for the new phase of marvel movies
