Thor was the only one who pushed Kratos to the edge, no other gods stood a chance. Plus according to lore itself Thor kinda gets battle frenzy when fighting long.

It's like just to show Thor is boss material. Even if he was depressed, he was enraged because Thor thought kratos will hurt or kill thrud just like his 2 sons, that's why he has gone all out besides he was allowed to kill him in the second fight. If you think Thor was a master combatant who fights with his brain, then you're wrong in actual mythology he was not that skilled and didn't used his brain quite alot he has pure strength and ability to control thunder with his harmmer, even to lift his hammer he has to wear a glove and a belt to increase his strength to lift mjolnir, his son magni is even stronger in terms of strength according to lore, and we have seen what kratos did to him. You can say, He's just a stronger version of Hercules with nemean cestus.

For me it was a kind of spark when I read a book about giants, and then I thought "Wait, isn't Thor that guy from the avengers movie?..."

I think he just wanted proof that this big bad god killer was the real deal and they had “worthy” deaths by a strong warrior. And he can tell that kratos is holding back cause of the rumors he’s heard he knows that he has to be tough. So once he saw that there was a very strong warrior in kratos he found his answer and his “debt” was paid. But this isn’t outright stated so it’s just how I see it

Kinda makes the characters nonsensical especially when the Norse valued the act pf vengeance, revenge, retribution, whatever you want to call it as necessary in the event of the murder of a loved one.
