Thor literally punched the serpent so hard he sent him to meet his ancestors.

People confuse the Jormungandr we met from 2018 to be stuck in a timeloop but no, the serpent that gets sent back in time during Ragnarok is a young one which Atreus and Angrboda created by putting the soul of a giant to a serpent

If you would notice the serpent's beard, the one that they met on midgard is different from the one fighting on asgard. So basically the one in midgard is actually the old one while the one fighting on asgard is the young one. That is why jormungandr did not want to tell atreus about ironwood since he knows all about it.

I love how angraboda is secretive of ironwood but the world serpent here just casually talks for all of Midgard to hear😂

The way Thor knocked the world serpent back in time and how he's voice echoed in the sky while flying towards kratos still give me goosebumps, that some real god stuff right there.

I love how they combined the original myth with a (for lack of better words) more realistic depiction of the events. Like how in the myth Fenrir and the world serpent are both Loki's biological sons. Whereas here it's more of a technicality, since Fenrir was his pet and he created the world serpent with a giant soul. It is as if later telling of the myth changed as the story was retold or in the theme of the game nothing was set in stone to despite the prophecy.

Come to think of it, it’s sad that the world serpent is stuck in a time loop. Fighting Thor every time while meeting Atreus as a child again and again… edit: after reading the comments, i have now gained the knowledge that he is not stuck in a time loop

To those who might be sad that Jormungandr is trapped in a time loop, fear not! The Jormungandr that we saw fighting Thor is NOT the same Jormungandr from the 2018 game! Earlier in the game, Atreus and Angrboda placed a Giant's soul in a snake. That snake eventually grew big enough to became the Jormungandr that we see fighting Thor in this video! You can tell that this is the younger version of Jormungandr because it's beard is not big/fully grown out! Therefore, Jormungandr is not eternally trapped in a time loop, this is just some weird paradox thing, I think. Edit: For those wondering how young Jormungandr was able to grow so fast in the span of days(?), it probably has something to do with the snake's body having been normal and mortal and then having a Giant's soul placed in it. Maybe the body had to grow rapidly to better accommodate the new size of the soul or something, I don't know, let's just say Giant magic had something to do with it and leave it at that.

So, basically, during Rangarok there are two World Serpents: one, the Old, is sleeping in the ice, and other, again him but younger, is fighting with Thor. And after ice will has gone, the Old Serpent will awake and live further c:

Seeing Kratos giving out commands or more like advice (i think) to other characters really tells a lot about his position as both a general and as a god of war back in greece

Notice when Mimir notes that the Jormungandr fighting Thor during the war ‘did not follow them from Midgard’. This means it’s the serpent Atreus awoke. Another detail is that the younger Jormungandr lacks the beard of moss that his present self has. Makes you wonder what kind of paradox would occur if the two were to meet.

For clarification no there are two Jormungandrs. The one we see during the Ragnarok siege was the snake Atreus had imbued with a Giant soul in Ironwood. he grew rapidly and was brought to the battle alongside Angrboda, her wolves, and Fenrir. When this younger Jormungandr is hit and sent into the past he stayed in the Lake of the Nine and grew even bigger, getting older. The current World Serpent was just asleep in the frozen Midgard while they all fought 😂

I don’t know the full story of the game yet, but I’m happy to see that Kratos and Atreus get to be in their own separate journeys, and it looks like Sindri gets a bigger role.

For everyone confused af I’m gonna make it simple to understand lol. The world serpents ORIGIN in this game is when Loki finds him in Angrbodas grandmothers house. Small and soulless. He imparts a giants soul into him from the giant marbles and gives birth to the world serpent. This world serpent grows huge FAST. This serpent is the one we see at raganarok. Notice how much less beard, moss and scars he has? During ragnarok Thor hits him and send him BACK in time. Like way way back. Long before GoW 2018. From that point forward he ages until we meet him in 2018. He’s already lived Ragnarok but got sent back years before 2018 and has grown old now. So the snake we see at raganarok is just a younger version of the 2018 serpent, who is the serpent frozen in Midgard in ragnarok. This is also why he’s so vague with Loki. He knows the future to a degree but doesn’t want to change or encourage any decisions. Just let nature run it’s course so to speak. So basically 2018 old snake is literally just chilling in the ice because his younger self is already fighting at ragnarok.

So the younger World Serpent is the one that got booped into the past, right? So should the older version of Jormungandr not still be chilling in the lake even after Ragnarok?

I just realized that jormungadr is the snake that got infused with a giant's soul by atreus Interesting parallel that Fenrir and Jormungadr are both Loki's children in norse myth and in the game they both came to be because of giant magic by of atreus

The snake wee see in iron wood, the one that loki and angrboda give the giant soul to, is the Jormungandr that eventually grows big enough and fights thor ( the young Jormungandr), then gets sent back in time. The Jormungandr sent back in time is the one we see in Midgard, and it's living out the rest of its life there, The Jormungandr from Midgard ( the older Jormungandr) told atreus about ironwood so that he could come into existence.

And even then, the young Jormungandr that got sent back in time, fought Thor again to a stalemate, and neither came out as a victor. From Thor's point of view, this is the second time he fought Jormungandr From Jormungandr's, this is the first time he fought Thor.

You can spot the difference between young ( 3:52 ) and old ( 2:45 ) Jörmungandr by the beard. The one fighting in Ragnarok has no beard and no battle scars. We can see when he was born he was the snake in Gryla's house. "Edit time stamps"

Wish he made more of an appearance in this game, honestly thought that was going to be the case given Ragnarok IS his main story. Like, I thought being a Giant and everything he would learn some sort of other realm's magic and join everyone in the house on the World Tree as either a spirit or even human-like.

Jormungandr was "born" when Atreus put the a Giant into Snake's body , Angrboda mentioned that it "is growing al lot" , this Jormungandr only met Atreus once , this was the one from Jöttunheim, and got sent back to midgard, and caused the reckoning in the Lake of Nine , before even Kratos got here.

The snake that becomes the world serpent (the one that Atreus revived with the giant soul) is the one that got sent back in time. The one that we know from the first game and the one we see speaking to Atreus in Ragnarok is still chilling in the lake in Midgard.

Makes me wonder, depending how far Jormungandr got sent back in time did he ever met the giant that his soul originaly belonged to?

Kratos is exhilarated from time travel because he’s never experienced it from a perspective. He may have went back in time himself, but seeing it from a point of view, he seemed to have deemed it wrongful. Kratos was born out of betrayal and vengeance, he’s become a very gentle person. It’s obvious.

There is no time loop. The younger Jormungandr was thrown back in time. That's it. The snake is now old & in the ice.

In a weird kind of sense, both Jormungandr and Fenrir were created by Loki/Atreus. While they aren't his children, he made them what they were

It's not a loop guys, but it is infinite Jormungandrs and timelines. The old Jormungandr tells Loki to go to Ironwood to create him, because if he didn't tell him, he wouldn't exist ( time paradox). By telling him to create him, there exist 2 Jormungandrs in a period of time between the creation of the young one and it being sent back in time: The old Jormungandr who tells you to create him ( the one in Midgard with a beard) and the young one (without a beard) who fights thor while the old one is in midgard . After the young one gets sent back in time, the old Jormungandr is still there chilling, only he remains, BUT the young jormungandr who gets sent back in time, grows old to eventually encounter Kratos and Loki, recognizing them and Loki as his creator. He then later on in ragnarok tells him to create him,(cause otherwise he wouldn't exist) but by telling him to create him, he also creates a new Jormungandr, that goes on to be sent back in time and do the exact same thing. It's not a loop, just infinite Jormungandrs and infinite timelines. Either that, or an infinitely looping single timeline, which Jormungandr is not "stuck in", it's just that his life and moment in time wasn't as linear as other's

If you think about it, the serpent snake fate is worse than death. Repeating same shit all over and over again, and worse than that, he remember what he's doing.

fun fact: In Norse mythology, jormangandr (pardon my spelling) is actually the biological son of Loki (Atreus) and Angriboda and its nice how they sort of interpreted this through the scene of Atreus and Angriboda both putting the soul of the giant into the snake.

Timeline for the confused: There is only one Jormungander. -Created by Loki and Angrboda in Ironwood using a giant's soul on a soulless snake -Grew up really fast, like really fast. Still in Ironwood. Angrboda tells Atreus/Loki about this when they met in Muspelheim -Taken to Asgard via realm tear by Angrboda and Fenrir during Ragnarok -Battles Thor and gets hit so hard, the world tree gets rocked and Jormy gets sent back centuries in time to Midgard (also survives Asgard's destruction because of this) -Jormungander stays in Midgard, grows older, and is eventually met by Kratos and Atreus centuries later during the events of GOW 2018 at the lake of the nine and participates in the events of that game -After that, is still in Midgard and is called by Atreus accompanied by Sindri during Fimbulwinter. Tells Atreus about Ironwood. -After Kratos and Atreus experiences Ragnarok and Asgard is destroyed, can still be seen in the lake of the nine, chilling. Because he never left.

For such a legendary moment as casting the snake back in time, the depiction was pretty weak.

Jorm isn't in a time loop either like many people think. I think the idea is that Jorm didn't get sent to Jotunheim like Mimir thought, he was sent back in time to Midguard. They state in the previous game that Jorm just suddenly appeared in Midguard one day. This is why. It would also explain his hatred for Thor, he lost a fight and was sent back to a time where said fight hadn't happened yet. The Jorm Atreus gave life to grew up to fight Thor and was sent back in time to live his life in Midguard. His personal timeline just overlaps. He's 100% not in a time loop.

For those of you who are confused the world serpent from 2018 God of War is the same exact World serpent that was sent back in time during the events of Ragnarok the one that Thor fights is the younger version that atres put the soul into

So Jormugandr literally lives both in past, present and future, always having infinite copies of him, going from past to the present and then to the future which being alive and part of the family.

Its because of the changes kratos a atreus made when they fight and kill baldur, he was supose to die WAY later than that, because of that atreus met a different version of the snake that end up being the giant thanks to the soul.

It just hit me the language Jormungandr, Atreus and Mimir spoke is the language of the giants and that's why Mimir in GOW 2018 said it was a "dead" language with Atreus being part giant (hence why he could understand and speak it) and Jormungandr having the soul of a giant my mind is fucking blown

Ok, I'm gonna attempt to clear up the Jörmungandr time loop debacle: Atreus and Agraboda put the soul of a giant into the dead body of a regular serpent in Jötunheim. THAT serpent over the course of ... (a few days?) grew into a young Jörmungandr and made its way to Asgard to fight Thor in Ragnarok. One epic Thor Vs. Young Jörmungandr later, Thor slaps him waaaaaayyyyyy back in time where Young Jörmungandr will mature into Old Jörmungandr. Old Jörmungandr will then live out his live until he catches up with the events of GoW 2018, where he meets Kratos and Atreus for the "first time" and says Atreus looks familiar. We know that the World Serpent that fought in Ragnarok was the Young one since he doesn't have his beard yet. Meanwhile Old Jörmungandr is probably someone in the Nine Realms chilling.

So Jormungandur is not stuck in a loop, here is his life according to GoW.: -> Dead big snake. -> Loki placed a soul into it. -> Grew exponentially in Jotunheim. -> Fought Thor in ragnarok. -> Gets thrown back in time to Midgard. -> Met dad of boi. -> Chilling the entire fimbulwinter. -> No show in ragnarok for a rematch nor to help his younger self.

Imagine how op it would've been if the older version of jormungandr joined the battle alongside his younger self, sure that'd fuck up the timeline since he wouldn't be sent back and Thor might not even land a blow especially with two giant snakes trying to chomp him but it would've been cool to see nonetheless.

For anyone that still confused. THERE IS NO TIMELOOP! There is 2 snake when Ragnarok happen (that fact) younger one get struck by thor and back in time, that same snake now is chilling in midgard after the Ragnarok ending. He only back in time once rightly after his birth. If you still confused imagine Captain America time travel in the ending of Endgame, Endgame time travel exactly like gow Ragnarok, there is 2 captain America in that timeline (younger one back in time returning the stone and stay and get old, that same captain then give falcon the shield), thus it prevents timelopping for him. Don't thinking it to much the simple answer is the right one.

So this Jormungandr that got sent back in time is the one that Atreus and Angrboda gave birth to earlier in the game. She even said that this snake was getting bigger and bigger and by the time Ragnarok happened he's already the same size as the Jormungandr we already have. So, the Jormungandr that's still frozen on Midgard is just chilling. For a meantime, we got 2 Jormungandr co-existing in the same timeline.

So basically, Atreus puts the giants soul into the snake, it grew into the snake fighting in Asgard, Thor punched it back in time, and then it grows into the world serpent in Midgard present day and is still there during this fight.

Why are people still confused? Old Jorm is hybernating through Fimbulwinter in Midgard, where he was sent to the past by Thor. Young Jorm came from Jotunheim, where he was first created by Loki and Angrboda. He might be at Ragnarok due to Fenrir opening a rift or a gate from Jotunheim opened to Asgard due to Gjallahorn being blown. His chronology is: >Giant Soul linked to serpent by Loki >Leaves and turns to Giant >Answers the call of Ragnarok >Fights Thor in Asgard >Gets sent back to time and space; in old times of Midgard >Met by Kratos and Atreus in 2018 game >Met again by Atreus to know about Ironwood >Still chills in Midgard surviving Fimbulwinter

For those saying the world serpeant is not stuck in a time loop because the snake that is sent back in time is the one Atreus puts the soul into. That is Jormungandr. Atreus creates Jormungandr with Angriboda in all the literature. It is one snake. Jormungandr is created by Loki. Fights Thor. Sent back in time. Events of GOW 2018 happen. Loki and Sindri talk to Joemungandr in Ragnarok. The snake dies. Then he is created again and it repeats.

So from what I'm reading, the younger Jormungandr gets sent back in time in this game and the Jormungandr we know is still in the ice in Midgard. But what's gonna happen when the young one who got sent back in time gets older? Will there be two World Serpents? Will the two merge into one World Serpent? Either the developers didn't think this time travel thing all the way through or I'm just not understanding it

It seems people didn't understand the Jormungandr lore. In the mithology, the serpent is "Loki's son". In the game, The Serpent is born when Atreus puts the Giants soul inside the snake, it grows in Jotunheim, comes to Ragnarok to fight Thor, and is sent back in time, before it was born. Then it meets Atreus again, and says to him that he looks "familiar". The older serpent though, doesn't fight in Ragnarok, then it is not locked in a time loop. Short story, they are both the same serpent...

After some thinking i understand now. I havent played the game yet so this is what happens i think. Atrues puts a giant soul into a dead snake? That will eventually turn into jormungandr and this young jormungandr fights thor at asgard during ragnarok. At 5:28 thor punches jormundgandr so hard he send him back waay in the past. I remember someone (mimyr or freya) telling kratos and atrues that jormundgandr also appeared out of nowhere in the lake on midgard and just chilled there. So in conclusion currently the old jormungandr the one we are familiar with is still chilling at the lake and this young one is fighting thor on asgard.
