My father was a jazz musician and Stan Getz was his hero. My father had a photo of me as a baby that was actually signed by Stan Getz, wishing me a happy life. He had it in his wallet until the day he died. My mom gave it to me and I still have it to this day.

One night decades ago, it must have been in the 60s, I heard him play an unaccompanied version of Little Girl Blue at Birdland. Within seconds after he started the whole place fell silent -- no clinking glasses, no one talking, and it seemed as if no one was breathing. I've been going to jazz clubs since the mid-50s, and that has stayed in memory as one of the most stunningly beautiful things I've ever heard.

I used to sit upstairs the Colonial night club on Yonge St in Toronto and have chats with Stan about his approach to playing ballads. He always......always said that you have to be in love with the song.........nobody..but nobody gets the sound out of their horn like he did. I respect all the greats...Lester, The Hawk....Trane...Sonny.....all legends in their own right. ...but to me Stan is head and shoulders above them all.....with that beautiful warm sound of his.

I can only imagine! His musical space was hallowed ground, emphasized by him playing a cappella. Such exquisite tenderness, passion, beauty and righteous inventiveness. He feeds everyone’s soul with wholesome missing nutrients. Divine.Pure love.

I play because of Stan....teaching for 30 years cause of Stan. The greatest swingingest album of all time is Stan Getz with the Oscar Peterson Trio with Ray Brown and Herb Ellis....no drums....unbelievable. Put your phones on check out the Ballad Medley....it's genius.

Two thumbs up to that, one of my all time favourite records also. His melodic inventiveness without getting overly complex harmonically along with his swing and tone are just peerless on it.

I grew up idolizing Sonny Stitt and still do for his inventiveness and complete mastery of his instrument(s). But when I was mature enough, I fell in love with Getz for his ability to convey a mood and for his tortured soul, too big for the limits of the corruptible human body. This compilation captures that aspect of his extraordinary talent perfectly, I think. Thank you.

I saw Stan Getz play "What Is This Thing Called Love" at breakneck speed to a dead stop and wait a few seconds and start "Shaky Flat Blues" soft and slow. I felt myself exhale in a big way only to realize the whole crowd was breathing the same. Such control. What a Master!

Many years ago at the Hollywood Bowl with a a cast of great jazz royalty, the place was in an uproarious mood and Getz and company came on stage amid the uproar and opened with "I remember Clifford" and with the first starting low note, the entire place went silent. It was one of the most moving jazz events I have ever seen.

Not only does he get the sweetest sound out of a tenor anyone ever did he plays some of the most beautiful simple lines and can say more in a few notes than many who play far more complex and busy lines.
@KickflipGnasty
@KickflipGnasty 3 года назад
He's among the elite at that. Though his playing is actually pretty complex, just in a less obvious, more tasteful way. Dexter Gordon does that too I'd say. And Shorter is most certainly capable of it. His playing in "A Remark You Made" is so emotional.

Robert - my father was a musician too and jazz was my childhood upbringing. Ditto re listening to Stan Getz v. The Beatles. I was the oddball who didn’t care for pop idols and once I’d discovered minor 9s 11s and 13 ths that was it!! Getz....divine, pure, unadulterated love! I cry at how moving he is. Only Stevie and Toots are the other two that stir my soul in that way.

There are many great sax players but Stan is one of a kind when it comes to improvisation. Just listen to his Bossa Nova tunes with Charlie Bird or Antonio Jobim. Trevor A

His tone, his tenderness, his improvisations were mesmerizing ... he created an entire novel with one set, one song ... and did he ever play a clam .... don't think so! I saw him in about 1989-90 in San Francisco .... his last 50 minute set seemed like 5 minutes .. as I went into some sort of hypnotic trance ... he and Bill Evans always did this to me .... and perhaps millions of other music lovers. If Paul Desmond (who could also play a ballad as well as anyone) was like a dry Martini, Stan was like melted butter .....

You can ad any version of Blood Count, a tune that was Strayhorn's last, delivered to Ellington's band from the hospital where Sweet Pea was in his last days. Getz learned the tune years before his death but the most searing versions are those with Kenny Barron, when Getz knew he had cancer himself.

Absolutely agree! That is the most deeply sensitive version ever. He was almost dying and asking Why to the Lord and answering to himself: It's OK! But I'll keep fighting. It makes me cry everytime I listen to it. And I do it almost daily. Thanks for your feelings and words!!!

I can faintly recall reading Downbeat (or was it listening to Mort Fega, or Symphony Sid?) where it was reported that Stan Getz had his ax stolen from his Corvette while in The Village (Greenwich). He was offering a hefty reward for the return of only the mouthpiece! By the way, I still have my card signed by Fega. It reads, "this non-square card certifies that (me) is a non-square MF'er, and, as such, is worthy of all benefits, rewards, awards, and other boons that may ensue. No 454. Mort Fega, president. this card is non-transferable." You jazz historians out there can have a peek if you email me. By the way, my favorite Stan Getz piece lasts maybe only a minute. It's on the Focus album spliced in at the tail end of one of the songs. You can tell a splice by listening to the background noise. Sandy Lehmanhaupt (Electric Cool Aid Acid Test) worked at Riverside Records for a spell. He taught me that listening to Bill Evans records. I don't have the Focus Album anymore, but I'll try to look it up in youtube if anyone is interested. All this took place while Getz was riding the bossa-nova wave.
