Not necessarily. Yes, there's obviously merit to the commandments relating to murder, stealing, lying, committing adultery and honouring parents. But the other five have little or no value or relevance to an atheist - having a sacred day, not following or making an "image" to other gods. @@franken1061 I’m an atheist. Yahweh is NOT just another God. Yahweh is THE superlative. It makes absolutely zero sense to worship second best, mediocrity or some rando. If you’re not attempting to purposefully pursue the superlative in your life, you’re a coward, and are sacrificing the best of things to your caprice. That’s the whole point. Epistemologically, there’s either one highest God, or you’re worshiping caprice. Can’t have it both ways…and that is PRECISELY what Christianity and Judaism get RIGHT. It’s not a supernatural claim. It’s an epistemological and psychological FACT. If you want to give your children and your wife second best, just okay, or just whatever…then you go right ahead and see where it gets you to evade contemplation of the superlative. Just don’t expect anyone to respect you…religious OR secular. There’s only ONE thing worth worshiping, and that one thing is the greatest of all versions of things, period. The name Judaism and Christianity give that superlative…is Yahweh.

One of the things that I find that many people miss when reading the Commandments, is that all of the commandments are there to protect the individual. If you murder, somebody is gonna wanna murder you if you steal, somebody may kill you if you commit adultery somebody will want to kill you if you bear false witness against your neighbor, somebody will want to kill you, etc. etc. the only ones that aren’t specifically protective of the individual are, honor your father and mother, and to worship God and God only, but one could also argue that those protect the individual also. I often hear people reject Christianity, because there are so many rules and regulations, but when you get right down to it, Jesus didn’t give a lot of rules and regulations, he only gave two. Love God, love your neighbor…. Do this and you fulfill the Law. “For God is Love”

True. One God and love thy neighbor are the gist. A good way to remember them is is that they are in two parts in order of descending importance (not that they are less important but that they come from the preceding). Commandments 1-4 are pleasing God, 2-4 come naturally from rejecting idols of all kinds. 5-10 although being summed up as loving your neighbor are things that cause societal problems and are ways to avoid getting yourself killed from killing others to eyeballing your neighbors wife and stuff. If you were to list overarching 6 reasons why you might be killed you would almost certainly be covered in commandments 5-10.

The one thing that jumps out at me is what Christ said (paraphrasing) "If you loved one another, you wouldn't need the law". Think on that, if you truly TRULY loved your neighbour, you would not go anywhere near his wife, you would not steal his property nor would you murder them. Quite the contrary even, the law spoke of compensation for loss, but again if you truly loved your neighbour you would not want them to be out of pocket for something you did, so you would willingly give double back by way of apology and to make up for any inconvenience. God IS LOVE. I sincerely wish non-believers would get this into their heads. He is NOT about punishment, but we do need to correct the ONES WE LOVE, so God will correct us.

@darthhodges

My thought process after the comment about "legitimate authority" goes like this. Is the authority that decides whether any given instance of killing was or was not murder itself acting consistent with the commandments of God? Are those individuals above average in their own obedience? Are they humble and subservient to God? If they aren't those things then they aren't a trustworthy measure of whether any given instance of killing is or isn't murder. If you can't find an authority that is those things then you can only trust in your own obedience to the commandments and what habits that leads you to develop, what you learn by your own study of the scriptures regarding what actions are and are not permissible, and what you are taught by the Holy Spirit. We cannot defer our righteousness to others, we are accountable for ourselves. As indicated by the individual tense they also mentioned.

God will judge the gentiles based on what they know. That means if they havent heard the word of god they will still know right and wrong because morality is gods unwritten law, and be judged based on that. @@skyfoxsimgamer2015 : It is NOT a recent proposition at all by any stretch of the imagination! Furthermore, since the word of God specifically states WHEN to execute someone and HOW (in some cases) , it makes everything crystal clear regarding murder and killing. The problem with some of these people "debating" is that some of them have never studied the Bible in their lives and they hold their own opinion about killing above the word of God. God made it so clear in so many places that there is time to kill and a time to make alive. However, you will find that people who NEVER study the word of God often try to "improve" upon God's word by taking a slice of the word and interpreting it literally instead of spiritually as commanded by God. They get this twisted idea in their heads that if they hold to the opinion that killing is NEVER right that they are somehow holier than other people. It is vulgar pride at its worst. Lieutenant Colonel (Retired) W. I am delighted that someone finally covered the topic, and Dennis Prager himself to explain the exact words! So... you needed a soldier on your discussion panel... I was once an infantryman... infantry's mission is to close with and destroy the enemy... If you're a soldier and a Christian you need to do a lot of thinking. Let me suggest, in the present age, there are detailed Rules of Engagement that explain when you can use deadly force, on whom you may use it, when the appropriate time is... and even where. For example, it is very important to be in uniform, which marks you (or your enemy) as a legitimate target, as differentiated from the public at large. And you are not a legitimate target just by wearing a uniform, but your government needs to have delineated exactly what country/enemy force you are fighting... (you can't just go to your country's border and shoot across at a neighboring country's border guard because he is in a uniform and it is different than yours...) Timing is also important, if soldiers meet on the battlefield, it would be killing. If a soldier has surrendered, is unarmed, and in captivity, it is clearly murder if you harm/kill that soldier. There are some rabbit holes that can be followed that are interesting, but no one in a public forum is going to want to explain them.

It is a very old guideline that would steer human consciousness toward ethical conduct, and a little further away from animal instincts. In times when violent reactions were maybe less frowned upon, this commandment helped bring us, humans, a little closer to living like souls that are in convergence with unity and group consciousness. When you want to change your life, it is easier to change your behaviour first, then new ways to think and feel will emerge naturally. It is much harder to change your behaviour by changing your perspective first. this is why commandments were important for steering young humanity towards higher spheres of beings. The fact that we can nuance this commandment with care and subtlety is the fruit of this commandment, and we don't really have to try to find its exact interpretation from the scriptures in order to fall back on this hypothetical perfect interpretation, because we have written in our hearts, and the commandment was mostly meant to bring us as a whole to a certain point. Whatever the language it is written about, it was written in our hearts before anything. We are the seed, and the tree is all there.

One being to encourage responsible animal husbandry by not overworking your stock; two as a way to avoid people trying to lawyer the point ( "Well, I didn't plow the field that day, the ox did" being an all too foreseeable argument from convenience.) ; and three to reinforce the overall point that this was a day of rest - so much so that even beasts of burden are bound to obey - and it was your duty to see that it was so.

When we turn to God and genuinely seek His guidance, He will lead us to where the moral boundaries are drawn. He tells us in His Word also. Cain very much did intend to murder Ablel when he told him to come with him alone and was very much angry with how God rejected his offering and not Abel's. If it wasn't murder; then why would God cast Cain out? Whether Cain knew his actions would lead to Cain's death or not; the intent of anger and hatred was there; which are two key components when trying to find out if a situation was a case of murder or killing.

For example, having the desire to kill for revenge. He also said that there were safe cities where one could flee to and be safe if they accidentally killed someone. Legal killing is killing for food, sanctioned executions, and killing for your nation, such as a soldier does against their enemy.

Yeah, not killing would be a problematic commandment because the old testament is full of killing. Whether as a punishment for breaking the laws or when attacking other tribes. The problem is that the command only really is ''kill when instructed to''. Stealing is also a legal concept. It's not simply taking stuff that isn't yours, it's unlawfully taking stuff that isn't yours. Again, a lot of confiscation happened after combat. Animals, virgins, slaves, stuff in general. Some people describe this as a grand moral code, but it is primarily in-group instruction.

@midovarnakey
@midovarnakey Год назад
@@Jesusandcoffee3382 I appreciate your desire to see the Gospel and the doctrine of salvation taught correctly, and I share your concern to see it preached well. To that point, I would go as far as to say that Calvinism is actually a works- theological system, since it holds that man is in fact so dead in sin, that he cannot even trust in Christ unless God himself opens his eyes and causes him to do so, and God does this of his own will and for no merit in the believer. These are two of the five points of Calvinism, "Total Depravity" and "Unconditional Election." I understand many people do not like Calvinism today, and I find some of the weedier points to probably not be worth discussing here. However, salvation is the vital and necessary part of Christianity, which we must understand correctly. I appreciate your desire to see it taught well, and I hope to give you here a good case for why Lordship Salvation, so called, is actually the biblical view! A common disagreement with Lordship Salvation rests in the idea that some believe Christians can go on sinning habitually and still be Christians, and this has been called by some the "Free Grace" salvation idea. I find Romans 8:13 to persuade me otherwise. I would ask you to look at it with me: "If you live according to the flesh you will die, but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live." The if-then phrasing indicates the certainty of the connection between the things it's connecting. If this thing occurs, then that thing certainly will occur. If I drive my car, then it will consume gas. There's no scenario where it does not. And this being the Bible, God is the one assuring us of the certain connection between these things. On the first hand, that if we live lives not merely containing sin, but , we will die eternal death. On the second phrase, the necessary connection between life/eternal life/salvation and putting to death those deeds of the body/of the flesh. Salvation then is always accompanied by a pursuit of holiness. Another thing to add, is that these good works/the death of sin only come about by the means of the Holy Spirit, and so we cannot credit the individual believer for them, when it was the Spirit who gave the power to do it. And so if we are saved, this salvation will always look like a walk marked by holiness, which is only accomplished by dependence on God, by the power of the Holy Spirit. I understand that this might be where people would claim it to be a works-based Gospel! However, it would only be a works-based Gospel (and therefore be wrong because it nullifies grace and the freeness of salvation, as Ephesians 2:8-9 speaks of) if the works the salvation. That is, if the salvation is based on the works. I think a good faith argument for Lordship Salvation as it is called, and the version of it which those who believe it would argue for, is that salvation is and works. Works do not earn salvation, but they are the fruit of it. As our Lord says, we shall know them by their fruits. Salvation is the tree, and it bears the fruit of obedience. God is the one who plants it, expecting obedience as a fruit (not because of works which we already had). As Isaiah 64:6 says, all of righteous deeds are like filthy rags. And so we cannot earn salvation, but Lordship Salvation rests on the notion that Christians who are saved by grace and for no merit of their own, will obey God because God does not plant fruitless trees: Philippians 1:6, 9-11 "And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ... And it is my prayer that your love may abound more and more, with knowledge and all discernment, so that you may approve what is excellent, and so be pure and blameless for the day of Christ, filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God." I sincerely believe that not only does Lordship not teach a works-based Gospel, but in all of my reading of Scripture I have found that Lordship is the biblical idea of salvation. Think of when Jesus causes the tree to wither because it bears no fruit. A very odd thing at first, but I think part of understanding that is that Jesus on Judgment Day will judge those who bore no fruit. He speaks of this in Matthew 7:21 as well: “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven." This is fearful indeed, and so I appreciate and understand your concern for the Gospel, and I hope that I have made a good case to you of what I think is the Bible's teaching on salvation. Please respond with your thoughts on this!

@@TheMackMamba I'm not sure, I haven't spent any real time learning evolutionary biology. I can offer some ideas: There are animal psychology reasons why some animals can be domesticated and some animals can't. For example, many civilizations have domesticated horses, but none have domesticated zebras. This is because horses naturally live in hierarchical familial structures which requires a psychology that understands dominance and submission, while zebras live in loose non-hierarchical masses and so have horrendously stubborn personalities that don't allow for domestication. Now this doesn't discount any of the examples you mentioned -- gorillas, as you note, especially live in hierarchical environments. Perhaps it's because they also have a stronger habit of challenging the dominant figure, whilst other species might not? Nonetheless, while I don't know the specific explanation for gorillas, my point is that I know that there are cases like zebras where science DOES provide a solution. Before discounting evolution entirely, it's worth at least understanding what their arguments are, since some of your objections may have been raised and answered in the past. It's worth noting that some of the animals you mention -- ostriches and elephants -- have actually been domesticated by humans.

@@michaelstark8720 That's not correct. Jesus, who is God in the flesh, did not make a mistake. Moreover, it was God's will for Christ to be arrested and crucified for our sins not protected. That's why He rebuked Peter.

The 10 Commandments are divided into 2: 1-5 are commandments between God and Man and 6-10 are commandments between Man and Man, so it would make sense that they would be the foundation of a community. In terms of the uneasiness of killing animals to eat, the Jewish laws (mentioned in the Bible- Leviticus) of kashrut (kosher) and the strict ways on which animals to eat and how to slaughter them properly separate Man from Animal and guide us on the ethical way to eat meat. The lesson isn't "don't eat meat" but eat meat in a way that services God. Most of the sacrifices in the Temple were of animals and God "chooses" the best of the best for God's fire to consume.

The last time that I was aware, years ago, of this being discussed the person speaking authoritatively about "the hebrew" indicated there wasn't a word specifically for "murder". At that time it was stated that the proper would sound like this: "Thou shalt not shed the blood of the innocent". So that has since then been my understanding of it. I hear now from Mr. Prager that there are separate words for kill and murder... Sounds legit, doesn't change my outlook on the commandment.

In context, "do not kill' is an accurate translation. As the context refers to murder in cold blood..

Killing is justifiable only in the defense of one's life, or the life of an innocent. Even so, one must do whatever is necessary to avoid killing unless there is no other choice in order to neutralize the threat.

The debate ultimately always resolves to : Moral Law. The foundation of how humans are meant to interact with each other. Legal structure is then applied into societal minutia. Killing is generalized. Murder is specific. Everything which lives kills something to survive. From microbes to Bengal tigers. When a human kills another human 'Moral Law' dictates whether it was killing or murder. Killing another human can be justifiable. To murder is to act 'outside' of Moral Law.

The language we use is most confusing to others, here is a correction to a translation. Thou shalt not commit murder, is different to thou shall not kill. After 67 years I learn something new that is important to understanding God and His Commands! I always wrestled with shedding man’s blood until I heard a Man of God say it is alright to execute men for crimes punishable by death. Now we learn that God only forbids murder, killing to eat or protection from evil is allowed!

Jordan focussed on the ultimate point - does the end justify the means? ANY action can be justified, because ANY action can be placed in a context of "This is the right thing to do", when the actor gets to define what "the right thing" is. If I truly believe the "right thing" is to have no humans alive one the planet, for whatever reason(s) I choose, then annihilation of all human life is the "right thing" to do. I think - maybe - these 4 commandments are based on foundational presuppositions that set out the minimums for "the right thing to do". 1. Individual human life has inherent value to the individual, and thus to the society as a whole (you may act to continue to live - eat, defend yourself). 2. Humans together in a social context - band, tribe, village - can be stronger than humans alone, IF basic ground rules are established - truth amongst societal members (no lying), truth between partners (no adultery), and rules about resources (do not take the resources of others, which implies an obligation to work to produce your own resources as best you can.) Fascinating discussions. Jordan's "Psychological Implications of the Biblical Stories" is an absolute tour de force, especially for a non-religious person with very little knowledge of the actual contents of the Bible.

I think that Jesus was clear that if the intention of the act is in the hatred and desire to deprive someone of life, therein lies the sin. If I kill with some other intention, such as preserving my own life, the sin is not there. I would add that within the human psyche both the need to preserve and desire to kill/take vengeance likely exist simultaneously, and so self-defense/fighting a just war/etc. does not preclude the sin of murderous intent.

If it was "do not kill" then you'd have a hard time explaining why God would then make laws demanding execution, which is killing. Glad this was referenced in the video!

In the Old Testament era self defense was ok, and even acts of war where commanded by God to the Children of Israel. After Jesus came and instituted the Kingdom of God He said we are not to resist evil, but to turn the other cheek, and even showed us the way by not resisting evil at His crucifixion. the Apostle Peter said that we as believers are to follow in Christ's step, and commit ourselves to God when we are confronted with injustices.

When it comes to Christianity, most Christians aren't Christians because it was their first choice. Quite the opposite; it's that they sought guidance, aid and wisdom from numerous other faiths and didn't find an answer that could satisfy them. Many turn to Christ because Christ is simultaneously difficult to comprehend and yet so simple a child knows who God is. If no one taught them, how could a child know? This answers the potential that not only is there a God, but that also means He had a purpose for you, which gives meaning to your life and fulfillment. It's a chain-reaction, and some will claim it's delusion, but they can't prove it even if they say it is. That is the essence of faith.

Dennis prager is a Conservative Jew. The Jewish Conservative movement is an American breakaway group from the Reform movement, which was founded in Germany in the 18th century as a breakaway group from the Orthodox. Originally the Reform movement was aimed at two things: turning the Jews from a nation that has a religion into merely a religious group, and integrating into the surrounding Christian culture by cancelling Jewish laws and adopting some Christian practices. For example, by pkaying the organ in synagogues furing Sabbath prayer services, eating pork and shrimp, and more. The Conservative movement was founded by Reform Jews who felt that the Reform movement was changing too many things too quickly. Thus they are conservative relative to the Reform, but liberal compared to the Orthodox. The Orthodox movement is the original Judaism taught by the Pharisees. It only took on the name "Orthodox" (correct or straight path) to distinguish it from the Reform. Before the Reform movement the only movements that existed since the 2nd Temple era were mainstream Judaism (now referred to as Orthodox), and the Karaaites. Nowadays the Reform basically just worship Progressivism as religious doctrine. They believe in progressive revelation, with Moses being merely the first in a long line of divinely-inspiref philosophers that continues to this day. His word isn't the direct word of Gd and doesn't obligate us. The Conservatives believe that we do have to follow the law, but have license to change it to suit the times. The Orthodox believe that the law is the eternal inalterable word of Gd that we are obligated to follow and cannot be changed, which is what the text says.
