I knew this was based on that one line from Edward, Gordon & Henry. I like how even though he's controller, STH isn't always perfect when it comes to flaws he had to endure from his own errors. This does feel like a S1 variation of Respect for Gordon.

You should do that with more stories if any come to mind.

A well-written story to kick off 2024! Nice way to show a character shift for STH from a generic authoritarian to a caring father figure, and clever to base the story off what could be seen as a single throwaway line.

Very nicely written story here, and a good follow up to Edward, Gordon and Henry. You should always be careful with what you say about others, because you never know how much it's going to affect a specific person.

Great way to start off the new year, NG! It's unique to see Gordon's feelings hurt over something that's not entirely selfish. Though his own boastfulness may have set the Fat Controller off in the first place, he had every right to be upset. I don't think anyone could handle hearing their own boss saying they don't like them. As for the fat controller, I think this is the moment where he goes from a grumpy controlling figure to the strict yet gentle father figure we all know and love. Though he may deal with the stress of being superintendent to a relatively new railway, he owns up to his mistakes and recognizes that his engines have emotions too. Even big proud engines like Gordon need a little human consideration sometimes. Well, Happy New Year to you and keep up the great work!

This is an unexpected and interesting story here. To get mad at the very being that pretty much bosses you around, but here this is a very interesting take here. It's a very great and interesting story to see. Well done on this. It's nice to listen to something like this to help cheer me up during my time of depression. I hope you had a wonderful New Year's.

Incredible story! As a kid I always wanted to see a story about that line from "Edward, Gordon and Henry" so this makes me very happy to see!

I still think that the ball had dropped with The Fat Controller's remark when Gordon went on strike with Henry and James but I like where you took this.

This is a wonderful story. Love that you took one line from an early episode and expanded on it. It was really interesting hearing how Gordon got offended by that comment.

Awesome story I am glad The Fat Director realized his mistakes in the end but it shouldn't excuse Gordon for containing his emotions within his smokebox

What an interesting story. Good to see Gordon in the right and STH in the wrong... to extent. Fun fact: By contrast to the original story, the US narration of "Henry to the Rescue" has STH saying that "these big engines are always causing me trouble". Sounds a bit more charitable, don't you think? Especially if it's said by none other than Ringo Starr. 😉 And it's what I've grown up with since I was a toddler.

I’ve wondered, in the RWS canon imagine if we didn’t see any other larger Henry and Gordon sized steam engines because of Sir Topham Hatt’s line here and we’ve seen that the following steam engines who arrived after numbers 5-11 have all been of smaller size, even if bigger steam engines like Arthur Murdoch Hank Belle and Rebecca have made it to Sodor in the TV Series canon. Though it is possible in the RWS canon after Oliver more big engines came in onto Sodor like say a 8F Standard 5MT 9F GWR Castle Bulleid Pacific Thompson B1 etc.

I have a few big engine OCs in my headcanon, who arrived after Oliver. Here's my NWR loco roster after #11: NWR No. 12 - Algernon (Midland 780 Class, basically my take on Bloomer) NWR No. 13 - Harry (LNER Thompson B1, similar to Carson's OC Richard) NWR No. 14 - Whitney (BR Standard 4MT 2-6-0, essentially a female take on Barry) NWR No. 15 - Aylwin (GWR 61xx, a rival-turned-friend for Duck) NWR No. 16 - Matt (LMS Stanier 8F, a tough goods engine similar to Murdoch or Hiro) NWR No. 17 - Eagle (Midland Johnson 3F, an engine from the early days who returned) NWR No. 18 - Valerie (SR Z Class, the older of the railway's "Southern Sisters") NWR No. 19 - Vivienne (SR Z Class, the younger of the railway's "Southern Sisters") Hope you find that interesting :)

I really love this story. this is like an important step in the fat controllers life. despite only having been in four stories at this point. I would say majority of these he was scene as an actual controller of the time. a bit rude, stiff up the old lip, and thinks they can say anything because he’s on top, but this story right here changes that it’s like the equivalent of a father doing something scaring to their child and then realizing how horrid it was and promised to never be like that ever again. as we see later on in the series the fat controller never again insult the engines. He is strict, punish those who missed behaved, but he is fair for what he does. Even to engines that aren’t on his railway. For instance TFC could have insulted D199 before he left for the other railway when he failed, but he didn’t he just said return him to the other railway and he will write his reviews later. Granted that is sir Charles, and not Topham, but that can explained that Charles got that from his father. truly a great story that can have a lot of weight if it were cannon.

Yes I do agree on the subject of the fat controller being in the wrong, and if I may ask you this, I wondered if it would involve Thomas after being grounded by the fat controller three times such as, 1. Gordon calling Thomas a silly little tank engine and making him derail his coaches, 2. Even though Thomas didn’t know about the danger and found the pirate ship he should have listened to him and 3. He shouldn’t have been so harsh on Thomas for after saving Ryan from the burning dynamite and as Emily had witnessed everything and told the fat controller about why Thomas had been through everything, he would apologise to him for hurting him and telling Thomas the truth about why he brought Ryan to the railway, I’m not being disrespectful about this but I just wondered what if it helps with the fat controller realising that Thomas was heartbroken after being scolded many times, if you take my meaning
