Thoughts about the OGL 1.2 - An improvement but the misdirection persists

OGL 1.2 is a sound improvement from 1.1 but make no mistake: WotC's misleading language and sneaky misdirection persists. We don't need to accept this new (and better) license just because some concessions were made. We must continue to voice our concerns and discuss this OGL openly until we don't feel threatened.

The VTT policy is even worst than the OGL, if that's even possible. You should make a breakdown of that too!

I only use the most basic functions of roll20, so I don't consider myself knowledgeable enough on the matter to give an informed critique. I'd have to do more research before I could be sure I understood the topic enough, but from what I hear from other creators, they do seem to be attempting to cut down all competition. And if that's the case, everyone loses.

Yup, the VTT conspiracy checks out. Apparently they are trying to kill all competition before they release their own VTT, and the whole 3rd party publishers thing was just unexpected collateral damage.

If the license cannot be revoked from the content you create, but they can revoke your right to the license, does also mean that you as a creator could not go back and re-release that content without having the license attached? Or am I completely reading into that wrong? As other content creators here on RU-vid have stated, it seems like WOTC and Hasbro have brought in a Crisis Management PR team in to handle comms for them. And I didn't consider it until Dungeons and Discourse brought it up on her channel, but isn't it odd the number of WOTC employees speaking out about surveys when they were all mysteriously silent about the license just a week before? So much smoke and mirrors, and sadly, it looks like a whole lot of people are falling for it. The gaslighting continues. Great criticism and commentary! Keep up the good work!

Great video man! Love your analysis. Honestly though, I don't think Wotc will deviate at all. They will just keep moving and/or hiding the goal post to confuse things.

Thanks! The latest leaks actually suggest that this whole thing may have been unexpected collateral damage of WotC trying to kill foundry and other VTTs to eliminate the competition before they lauch their own VTT. If that's the case, I don't see them conceding either... (Also, do you happen to play Long Dark?)

@@TheFirstArcadianDnD I don't and wasn't sure why you might ask until I looked it up. I actually adopted Wintermute as my moniker after the AI character from William Gibson's Neuromancer. I suspect they planned on some amount of blowback but NEVER to this extent. I think it is clear that, from the get go, one of their primary targets were VTTs. The new VTT license spells that out in a pretty direct way.

I am suddenly noticing a sharp drop in views about ogl. I do not think this is the community not watching. I had a very hard time finding videos and I was seeking them out. Curious. Perhaps I should just forget it and move on...right utube and WotC

I'm noticing that too. It could be people outside of the community that are losing interest. I, myself, can't wait for this whole thing to be over, so everyone can go back to making their normal content, but I'm trying to do my part to keep this issue alive so WotC can't brush it off that easily...

Oh, I'm 100% exxpecting that, and One D&D and their new VTT to be infested with microtransactions, but by placing the SRD under creative commons, they can't go back anymore. It's not in their power. Never in a million years would I see that coming!

So draft is just the word for writing something. You draft a letter or a contract. You are thinking of Rough Draft which is what you do before you write a Final Draft. You are thinking they are being deceitful when you just didn't understand something, I wonder how many more things you may have misjudged due to a lack of knowledge.

Draft as a verb could mean that, yes, but it is usually used with preliminary pieces of writing, not final documents. The draft of a contract can still be subject to change, but what you give people to sign must be the definitive version (not a draft), since once they sign it it becomes binding. I'm not a native english speaker, so I understand your concern, but my opinion aligns with many other creators (some of them lawyers).

All they have to do is make everything we like, but keep that any wway, or condition was it?, they choose. Then there they go, according to the Imagine that the licensed content you are allowed to have is under the original documents that they tore up and gave up on? That's all they need. Oh yeah, the you can have our stuff under the conditions, well you guys are familure with it, and if you dislicked it, why did you sign? ANy condition? You knew which conditions we would choose, we made it obviously clear what our intentions were, everyone made a stink, you were there, we all were.
